After last year's graduation losses, H.H.S. did about as well as expected. The season started with a smashing 25-0 victory over Woodstock. Then came our crushing defeat at the hands of Middlebury, 33-0, a team that was selected as state champions by the Vermont Headmasters Association. The next five games were fairly evenly played. However, the final game against Windsor was the highlight of the season. Everyone was up” for this game. It was a tough, bruising contest. The best football play of the year was exhibited and H.H.S. came away with a 27-21 victory over our archrivals from Windsor High. Ron Bebeau, Bruce Wheeler, and Roger Donahue were selected on the All Marble Valley team; Ron and Bruce for the second straight year. arsity B asikettall KNEELING: C. Stone, Tri-Captains; R. In the state play-offs, H.H.S. defeated Montpelier by a 5-0 score. In the second game H.H.S. went down to defeat in a heartbreaker by a 1-0 score to Brattleboro High, who went on to take the state title. In the final game John Freitas closed out a brilliant high school career by pitching his best game - a no hitter. But it was not enough. A few timely hits for H.H.S. could have taken the boys on to victory. Prospects for next year's season appear to be reasonably bright. Coach Dyer is looking forward to a stronger hitting nine. More impressive than the record of wins and losses was the excellent display of sportsmanship shown by the entire team. Team work, rather than individual play, contributed to the success of the team. However, excellent defensive work by departing Seniors Betsy Schaal and Gerry White and offensive play by Martha Denson and Sandy Aldrich sparked the team's effort. The outstanding victory of the year was the 42-36 win over Lebanon. All signs point to a promising season in the year to come, with the JVs adding their talent to the remaining varsity team. The senior additions were vital and nearly half the team was composed of them.
