Making Education Decisions Wfhat is a superintendents job? Oh my! sighed Mr. Blackburn. He is the man largely responsible for the 'hiring and firing' of our teachers, and also for the improve- ment of educational facilities in Hartford. Mr. Black- burn has a few unorthodox secretarial duties, such as preparing the agenda for meetings of the Board of Education, taking notes and recording the minutes of these meetings. Wforking alongside Mr. Blackburn is the school board, which has been busy planning and supervising the construction of the South Side School, finished this year. The school board is also responsible for the school program and approving the school calendar. Mr. Blackburn's executive secretary is Miss Leila Lewis, who makes out state reports and keeps a record of expenditures and receipts in the operation of the city schools. They Turn The Wheels Of HCHS As principal of the largest student body since 1938, Mr. Myron Clark is kept busy the Whole year long. A variety of duties, ranging from making out classes for students and teachers to being an emergency substitute teacher himself, are very time-consuming for our principal. Perhaps the two largest organizational worries which be- fall Mr. Clark are the Guidance Conferences held in the spring, and the sectional tournament, where Mr. Clark plays host to 3000 people. In countless daily tasks, such as checking 'Iixcused' or 'Unexcused' on a student's absence slip, Mr. Clark is aided by assistant principal Mrs. Marion Xvilliamson. Besides her oiiice work of keeping attendance records, sending out col- lege transcripts and preparing the daily bulletins, Mrs. XVil- liamson teaches classes in advanced shorthand and ofhce practice. Si McCaffrey, who has been the schools maintenance super- visor for the past four years, readily admits that he likes everything about his job. Reminding confused students of their forgotten locker combinations is all in a day's worku for bookstore man- ager Nyla Willmann.
