Less tangible, more important impressions - how to think, study, find out, understand - can be formed in the classroom. Learning also exists outside the realm of book reports, problems l-25. carbon disulfide and the Battle of Lexington, in clubs, sports, and friendships with other students and teachers. All phases of education - reading, creating, experimentation, training, experience - make per- manent impressions on a student's life. Mrs. FIT1Sl1XK'lllCI',BlFX. Daniels .ind Miss Clift stop for a pre-class chat. English Courses Set Up A Basis For All Study Graduating Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. degree from Hanover College, Miss Bobbie Cliff has completed her second year as a member of the English Department. Last year Miss Clifr guided pupils in achieving the fundamentals of freshman and sophomore English. Organizing and promoting the annual magazine sales was just one of the time-consuming tasks performed by Mrs. Esther Daniels as a senior class sponsor. Mrs. Daniels received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Ball State Teacher's College and also attended DePauw University. Last year she taught eighth and ninth grade English classes. Besides conducting classes in sophomore and junior English, Mrs. Florence Emshwiller was kept quite busy during the past year as she assisted the junior class in their fund-raising projects for the prom. Mrs. Emshwiller attended Oberlin College and Indiana University and has received her B.A. degree. Overseeing the job of providing students with outside reading and reference material this past year was Miss Barbara Marshall. Besides acting as librarian, Miss Marshall taught library science and co-spon- sored the Y-Teens and eighth grade class. She received her B.S. degree at Ball State Teacher's College. Teaching world history and eighth grade social studies was Mrs. Wilma Hartzell. Mrs. I-Iartzell graduated from Ball State Teacher's College with a B.S. degree, and received her M.A. at Indiana University. This year she served as one of the co-spon- sors of the eighth grade. When was the War of 1812 fought? All United States and world history questions aren't this simple when they're asked by Mrs. Ruth Lindsey, American and world history instructor. Mrs. Lindsey received her B.A. and M.A. degrees at Indiana University. She was also a co-sponsor of Y-Teens. Mr. Floyd Warner, chief organizer of the coke and popcorn brigade at ball games, was sponsor of the concessions this year. He also taught history and math to junior high students. Mr. Warner attained his B.S. at Indiana State Teacher's College and his M.A. at Ball State Teacher's college. I say, don't they have an afternoon tea break here in Amer- ica? Teaching Civics, sociology, and economics and United States history this year was Mr. William T. Barnett, from Derby, England. The exchange proved to be a lot of fun for both Mr. Barnett and us, as we learned about the United States, England and people in general. Mr. Barnett studied at York and Lon- don, and received his B.Sc. Economics degree at London Uni- versity. In dramatics class students must develop the ability to express themselves creative- ly and clearly. This important aspect of education, creativity, can be found in almost every phase of school life, from Writing and music to sewing and mechan- ical drawing. L Drama Ancl Speech Encourage Creative Expression In his English, literature, speech and dramatics classes, Mr. George Tolson prepared upperclassmcn for college work. I-Ie also sponsored and directed the junior and senior class plays, Men Are Like Streetcarsn and I Remember Mama. George college-is-rough Tolson attended Indiana University and has acquired his B.A. and M.A.T. degrees. The high school dramatics club, which had its be- ginning last spring, continued this year with many varied activities. The Thespian Society, whose purpose is to produce plays and train talent, not only in acting but also in stage craft, is sponsored by Mr. George Tolson. Netting the group about S40 was their production of the Broadway play, You Canit Take It XWith You. One act plays presented by club members for civic organizations were How To Choose a Secretaryf, and Why I Am a Bachelor. Besides the plays, they also dramatized several various skits, one being a parody of Steve Alle-n's Man on the Street, at the Christmas program. A variety of duties, ranging from making out classes for students and teachers to being an emergency substitute teacher himself, are very time-consuming for our principal. Perhaps the two largest organizational worries which be- fall Mr. Clark are the Guidance Conferences held in the spring, and the sectional tournament, where Mr. Clark plays host to 3000 people. In countless daily tasks, such as checking 'Iixcused' or 'Unexcused' on a student's absence slip, Mr. Clark is aided by assistant principal Mrs. Marion Xvilliamson. E v -., A Directed by Mr. George Tolson, the play I Remem- ber Mama, adapted from Mama's Bank Account by Kathryn Forbes, was presented by the senior class on April 15 and 16. The play, narrated by Katrin QNancy Lordj, revealed in flashback scenes Mama QElna Cederholmj wisely deal- ing with all the perplexing problems which confronted her Norwegian family. Should Nels fRex Elliottj go on to high school? Does Katrin have writing ability, or should she give up her dream of being an author? How should jealous Christine CPat Barabej be handled, and how could Mama tell Dagmar fSuzy Fulton? that her beloved cat was dying? Mama, with her wisdom and patience, managed the household, with the aid of her little bank, even through the months when Papa Uohn Jacltsonj was out of work. Mama's own family often posed quite a problem for her. Causing her worry were fierce Uncle Chris QDave Bennettj, bossy Aunt Jenny fEdie Jane Atkinsonj, whining Aunt Sigrid QTherese Guignardj and timid Aunt Trina fCarol Hedstromy. As the play ended, Katrin had completed her lirst good writing and was reading to the rest of the family, . . . first and foremost, I Remember Mama. Traditional sets were renovated for the play as the seniors experimented with multiple and imaginative sets and drops. Another first was honorary senior fLe0 Sherleyj, a seventh grader who played Sigrid's son, Arne. His first and last impression of H, C. H. S. may be the ivy-covered building which, though superficial itself, houses those who make impressions of the school alive and worthwhile - the people of Hartford High. lt is through the teachers and students that he gains knowledge, learns to live with others and experiences new things, all of which will remain with him as impressions. Each one has his special impressions of the school year - the basketball game, the prom, that certain friend, the dis- covery of a new field, The l958 Retro, a picture book of all these, we hope will be able to bring an almost forgotten impression back to life. 'Dale Diamondmen l Win Awards Eleven members of Claude Weeks' 1957 baseball team earned their baseball major H awards which were presented on class day 1957. Fred Streib received the American Legion Award for baseball and silver base- balls went to Don Burnworth and Bill Grover. Bad diamond conditions resulting from the heavy spring rains forced complete postponement of three scheduled games which lessened the Airedales' chances for a victory. Also such tough opponents as Muncie Central and Anderson were a leading factor in the 0-5 won lost record compiled by the Airedales. .f . X... ' ' W s-.Vx si. . .. , -' , , Ww- . v.-. . Mile Relay Team Breaks School Record At Portland Shattering the school one mile relay record was the biggest accomplishment of John Carbone's 1957 track squad which copped only one meet for the six in which they participated. Thinlies John Jackson, Rex Elliott, Jim Bratton and Dave Jones each carried the baton in the record smashing mile, timed at 3:46.7, which was run against Portland on the Panther track. The individual friends he has shared his school experiences with make the impressions of that terrible English test, the wonderful ball game, the enchanting prom much more meaningful and memorable. The friends a student has in high school, besides being companions and sharing the activities of school life. help him learn, by their different characters and ideas, about people and about himself. wif-, , fm im.. 3 V if ah r. Scores of lovely mermaids whirled with their dashing sailors to the rippling music of Jim- my Stier. Wild colored fish, seahorses and fishnets were the decor of this watery underworld. Crowned queen of the 1957 Prom, Neptune's Ball, Georgeann Ravaux and her escort jerry Galbreath reigned throughout the dazzling night and into the early hours of the morning. The Kiwanis Lucky 7th All-Night Festival kept the promsters moving at a fast pace. First came The Buster Keaton Story at the Hartford Theatre, then back to the high school gym for dancing and entertain- ment. After getting out of 'that stiff shirt' and 'all those hoops,' everyone hurried to the American Legion Home for a refreshing breakfast. Last on the line came the Country Club with contests and treasure hunts. Then for most it was home and to bed, content with knowing that this Prom had really been the 'best yet.' Perhaps two events which the seniors remember most vividly from the year before and look forward to with the most exictement are Class Day and Graduation. The contrasting moods of the gay, carefree Class Day skits and the solemn graduation ceremonies climax a senior's six years' fun and hard work. Max Pulley, Bonnie Harrison, jane Crlmmel and Jane Cale proceed down jack I ly's Class Day comedy skit .imuses Brenda Coe, Sondra Cray and the aisle in the 1957 graduation exercises. jane Crimmel. They study, talk, play, goof off. They feel serious, carefree, jealous, happy. They all do and feel these things, but they all are different and leave individual impressions with the student, who is a little different himself.
