'lihe ll young orators addressed class- mates with dedications, and elimaxed the course bv giving 49-minute speeches on any subject, following the methods learned throughout the semester. Panel discussions on teenage problems, as well as weekly themes, and several book reports, kept the underclass linglish classes busy while seniors waded through the school's college prep course via work- books. Latin students took in the Chicago sights on their trip to the windy cityn and corresponded with foreign pen pals to liven the routine of trans- lating the ancient language. French students stud- ied the origin of their romantic language and the history of the 37 lirench provinces through the use of their recently purchased S-ft. by -l-ft. map. Seventeen juniors and seniors became guinea pigs for the new diversihed occupation plan. All D. O. students received a grade from their em- ployer and one from their instructor, with whom they spent a Fifth hour activity period. Such was a requirement of the two sociology classes this year-term papers written on some social problem. The obviously favorite topic was alcohol, as 17 students wrote of its disadvantages to the public. Given the chance to raise their grades by reading material outside of class, junior sociologists could often be seen browsing through an article concerning marriage problems or race relations to get those 75 pages of outside reading needed for an A. Supervising the mock election on November 5 and planning trips to national parks in complete detail were the civics students. They also participated in weekly discussions on current events and gained much information concerning the government. Besides searching for untruthful advertisements on the radio and learning to balance .1 budget, economic students also explored Engel's laws and Hlled out sample in- come tax forms. Wforld history students relived the explorations of Magellan While U. S. history pupils memorized the 48 states and capitals. Serving as a student stenographer to the principal for a week during their otiice practice course, the future secretaries encounter every orlice problem imaginable as they take dictation, transcribe, and operate the ditto machine. This familiar command by Principal Myron Clark is repeated approximately ISO times during the school year :is he acts as pilot to the 465 senior high pupils and 283 junior high stu- dents of his school family. Managing the oflice, keeping all school records, and teaching two classes were among the duties assumed by Mr. Clarlfs co-pilot, Mrs. Marion NVilliamson, assistant principal. Reigning as chief navigatorn of the city schools, Mr. E. Phillip Blackburn ably handled the many complex problems which arose, and contributed to the plans for a new South Side Grade School, to be com- pleted in the near future. His crewmen. the board members-Mr. Joe Bonham, H. D. Thornburg, and Keith NY'entz-met twice each month to discuss cur- rent school issues and aid in planning the new insti- tution for learning. Keeping all books in order and the budget balanced. as well as making out various state reports, kept executive secretary Leila Lewis on the go. 'N an lf x'-al fl ig Q I 1 v , , . TEACHERS! Appearing on the teaching staff this year were seven new faces. Among the new tudors, four lucky lasses and one lone male experienced their first year of teaching. Mr. Tolson had been broken in one year previously, while Mrs. Hartzell is a 1-l-year veteran. Assisting and sponsoring the 12 extra-curricular clubs was the way in which many of the instructors spent their few extra hours. Seventy students ex- tended it merei to two of the first year teachers as they joined the newly established organizations- G. A. A., and Dramatics. Another new look in extra- curricular activities was the girls' pep club sponsored by Miss Kasparek and occupying two sections of the gym with its 160 members. Aside from their roles as sponsors. the 3U-member teaching staff again assumed their primary purpose- that of passing on their knowledge to the students of H. C. H. S. Band members sported beaming smiles this year after raising 51,088 by selling band tags and stickers. This was the largest amount ever taken in on annual Band Tag Day. Garbed in their sparkling black and gold uniforms, the band members journeyed to the Bluffton street fair where they received a superior rating for the third consecutive year. At the district marching contest at Ft. Wayne, the instru- mentalists were awarded an excellent rating for their Showboat show. Entertaining the football fans and parade watchers, the high-stepping bandsmen marched in all kinds of weather and presented minor forms of rock 'n roll music at pep sessions and basketball games. Under the direction of Mr. Williana Fread, the band jour- neyed to Arcadia, -Iackson Central, and Ben Davis high schools as part of their April tour. Besides performing in the winter and spring concerts, the band worked many hours on their three contest numbers and after adding the final touches were awarded superior. Developed through years of research, the dream of yesterday has become reality today. We are living in an age of speed. perhaps most perfectly symbolized by the jet. A product of perfection, the silver bird departs from the earth to shoot through the blue sky. leaving its visible vapor trail as evidence of its presence. The school is the student's world, just as the sky is the world of the jet. Also traveling at a rapid speed, the student embarks as a seventh grader upon a six-year journey and all too soon finds himself on the runway of the gym floor wearing a cap and gown. The sporting events, the prom, the class play, and even the classes- all are part of our vapor stream which vanishes quickly. But thc memories of these things will not vanish, for this. The 1957 Retro, is the log of our journey. Turn the pages and accompany us on a flight through Hartford High. Page luv 5-'J---1 'lc 'hill' ' 'fa ' viii' ' 'L i l , 'HMM ,Y .,,,, , . ,ln .. The Blackford County Tuberculosis Association promoted health and safety through rendering the TB patch test to junior high pupils and sponsoring the mobile chest x-ray unit. The Junior Chamber of Commerce gave upperclassmen the opportunity to compete in the National Voice of Democracy essay and speaking contest. After the elimination of stu- dents in their English classes, eight finalists were chosen to present their entries before a panel of speech authorities. The two winners were recipients of savings bonds. The school, in turn, opened its doors to par- ents and other interested citizens at the annual Open House. The Kiwanis all-night festival and the presen- tation of Class Day awards drew the curtain on the year's events. kr- YT can inltmtus form .1 wtmi-circlt ,it the formal imtution se FYICCQ S6001 gef- ogcfAcr5 ronzofc Oll1PLTlIiOl15 up Right QTOPJ: Nlr. After considering many possible themes, the staff made the flfhll decision and work got underway. Besides getting a late start, the staff was confronted by numerous other difficul- ties-Mrs. Franks's illness, camera trouble, and last, but by no means least, those hard-to-meet deadlines. Pictures were scheduled, taken, and often retaken. It was rough going at times, but with the help of the Edmonds and the Kingsleys, we were able to get the good pictures we wanted, and by deadline dates, too. The cover colors were chosen and a design worked out that would be just perfect. Sports and literary editors kept the copy rolling in, and with each day new progress was made. At long last on March 15 the completed page dummy and engravings were sent to the printer. Staff members then began the long wait until May. Although at times it was working against a stone wall, it was worth all the toil and trouble to see the finished product on class day. Editors found the job of proofreading copy diiiieult as the trip to Fairmount was a longer one than the short trek previous staffs made to the school print shop. One suitable method for occasionally transport- ing copy to Fairmount was found in the daily journey of Assistant Principal Mrs. Marion Williamson to her home there. Dcnald Carlton, a young scientist played by Cary Blair, departs in the first act for Washington, D. C., on a mission con- cerning his invention of a new type of gas. His sensible wife, Bonnie Sue Harrison, allows three stran- gers seeking shelter in the blizzard to enter the home only to find out later that the trio, played by Ed Huffman, Steve Hershberger, and Hal Meyers, intend to capture her for a leper colony. Answering the membership call this year were 120 girls. Net fans sat in awe when over 60 seemingly little girls appeared at the Elwood-Hartford City basketball game. Wearing their hair in pigtails, clad in short skirts, and carrying dolls, these small frys were actually sophomores undergoing the tortures of informal initiation. The club members dug in for the March of Dimes Drive by holding potato chip sales in the hall at noon. Selling tickets to a drive-in movie, The Yearlingf, was the Y-Teens way of aiding the Memorial Swimming Pool Fund. Concluding the year by sharing in the Hi-Y, Y-Teen Spring Banquet, the members vowed to continue with their motto for the year- To be a force to good in the world today.
