TO GROW is to expand, develop, flourish. Plants and lower animals grow only in one way-by their intake of food. They grow mostly physically. As students, we also growg but it is more than physical stature we attain. Physical, mental, and social maturity re- sults from our intake and absorption of the opportunities HCI-IS offers. But no matter what degree of growth we attain individ- ually, memories will remain with us of those pals, our classes, and the ancient build- ing-for it is HERE WE GROW! Not only did D. O. prove advantageous because weekly pay checks took care of many school life expenses, but also these workers were able to practice what they learned in school. Although handicapped by a deficiency in experi- enced Linotype operators, the print shop boys still produced tickets and programs for various school events, tourney ticket cards, guidance conference booklets, and numerous other printed matter needed by the high school, as Well as putting out nine issues of The lnkspot. Here students prepared to pursue future vocations or perhaps just to be handy around the house. Wood shop boys made furni- ture for Mom while they were learning about their product. Metal shoppers made tools such as hammers and screw drivers with the help of a newly purchased lathe. Also looking to the future were the home eco- nomics girls as they prepared themselves to be home- makers of tomorrow by learning to cook and to prepare meals for one another and friends at noon. In addition these gals learned to sew and to make their own clothes. Physical education classes built those greatly desired masculine muscles and trim feminine figures, as they also taught co-ordination, sportsmanship, and skill. Later 17 of 34 entries in the district solo and en- semble contest rated superior. Buttons popped also when band members raised over 5,700 on Band Tag Day. Winter and spring concerts, a tour to other high schools, and the playing contests, in which the band won First Divisioni' in state competition, added to another successful year. Highlighting the year's activities were approximately 35 public ap- pearances, including a mid-winter concert given in January, the district music contest in March, and a one-day tour to other high schools. Also the Girls' Quartet-composed of Edie Jane Atkinson, LaVerne Shafer, Becky Combs, and Claretta Willmann-was featured at several group performances. Caroling atop a float built by chorus members in the Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade, the vocalists also paraded through the school halls singing favorite Yuletide carols to classmates the day before the an- nual vacation. To guarantee perfect performance, sectional practices, in which only one voice group practiced at a time, were held during the noon hour and a four-speed console record player also aided in de- veloping voices. The instrument Was purchased by the group last fall, and a music library started. MIXED CHORUS Bringing out the best from Mixed Chorus tenor, soprano, bass and alto vocal cords is director Miss Esther Nesbit, who tutors nearly 850 students per week. In addition to the Chorus, she also instructs high school glce clubs, junior high classes, and local grade school students. Having served on the school staff 25 years, Miss Nesbit has contributed much to pupils' music appre- ciation. Fungus, bacteria, and other forms of life too small to be seen by the naked eye, became visible to members with the aid of microscopes, while frogs and fishworms were the vic- tims of group dissections. Reports were given on everything from ants to zebras. Wert Collecting French sheet music, playing French records, and keeping a bulletin board were devices which French Clubbers under Miss Mabel Fee used to make the language seem real. Financed by a candy sale, a Christmas box was prepared by members for a needy French child. Speaking French, reports of French customs, and singing French songs were features of a Christmas party and other social events. Besides bringing Caesar to life again, Latin Club members, super- vised by Miss Lois Rinsch, originated sock hops and sponsored candy sales which provided funds for the annual Roman Banquet and sent representatives to Latin conventions. Second-year students planned to journey to Chicago to visit well-known museums and the planetarium. Caroling in Latin highlighted the Christmas program. Tall Weeksmen win 70711 of games Although Coach Weeks was faced with a rebuilding program this season after losing six lettermen from last year's regional-winning squad, under his skill the Airedalcs, besides finishing their regularly scheduled season with 12 wins and 6 losses, once again entered the charmed circle by winning the sectional for the fourth year in a row. They eliminated Montpelier, Dunkirk, and Roll to gain a right to play in the regional before being eliminated by Marion in their afternoon game at the regional. Thus the Airedales finished their rebuilding season with an impressive 15-won, 7-loss record. The 1955-S6 Airedales were a comparatively tall team, with an average height of six feet, two inches. They ranged in height from six-foot six-inch Bill Grover to five-foot-ten Fred Santilli. The 'Dale team did not participate this season in the Holiday Tourney at Huntington because Coach Weeks felt the boys needed a rest. Bob Reid led the individual scoring for the season while Raymond Cline finished a solid second, Graduation left seven of the Hrst ten, only Reid, Cline, and Michael making a final exit. After discarding many suggested themes, the class of '56 finally chose one from an idea learned at a press conference. During the summer months staff meetings were held, and when school opened in September, the staff found work, Work, and more work ahead for the next several months. Deadlines had to be met-at all costs! Pictures had to be taken by the hundreds, and inevitably those last-- minute pictures were overexposed, or the photographer forgot to load the camera-and they had to be retaken. Copy had to be written page upon page. Work kept piling up, and even though deadlines were set, it seemed impossible to meet them. Copy editors typed furiously, the business managers attempted to keep the expenditures balanced with the in- come, and the editors gathered their information. Slowly, one at a time, sections were sent to the engravers until at last all had been sent in. The proofs Were returned, were read and reread, to be sure all names were correct and mistakes eliminated. At last the book was sent to the printers and the waiting period began, until we handed our Retro out on class day. It has been work, laboring under pressure, and meeting diflicult deadlinesg but under the encouragement and patience of Mr. Edgar Henderson, we've done it. And it has really been a major milestone surrounded with wonderful memories in our high school careers, Page ,fifty-t'u:o 1956 Xfllffll' rlaxx rm'u1f1ui's AIIII Kellogg, Peggy Kilt. L ils Eighth grade students Iudy grow in social grtiiczee Some things never change. Year after year, the same scenes are seen with new actors playing the parts. As the acorn symbolizes the growth of the oak tree, so are these scenes symbolic of the growth of students. Since the seventh graders moved to the North Ward, they can bc seen daily trudging between their own build- ing and the high school to pursue their curriculum. Pros- pective art students are found among the eighth graders required to take nine weeks of art a year. Future home- makers learn to wash dishes in the ninth grade, while sophomore students must pass the refresher math test. For that long-awaited prom, juniors ho-ld many fund-raising projects, including selling wrapping paper and running the check room at ball games. Then that last year. The seniors work from September to May on their gift to the school- The Retro. One of the major fund raising campaigns is the magazine sales, with prizes offered for high salesmen of both companies, Crowell-Collier and Curtis. Next year new faces will take the place of those pic- tured here-but the scenes will be the same. Martin, Laurence Funk, Sal- ly Kcmzedy, Violet Scbon- barilt, and Henri Evans work on art class textile product.
