To him a year is nine months minus Sundays and holidays. Six of these periods must pass-summer vacations don't count, you know-before a shy, green seventh grader advances to a blase, dignified senior, who, donning his cap and gown, receives the coveted diploma. In these next pages the staff has assembled these year-classified students who this May are taking another step toward the world outside. 1. XY'ho decides to hire those attractive young teachers? XVho donates their time to serve the community in establishing policies for the city's school? Answer: The Board of Education. The Board is guided by Superintendent lf. Phillips Blackburn, whose light you frequently see burning in his office late at night as he solves some executive problem such as planning the strategy for the pro- posed consolidation of Licking Township schools of Hartford City. One of the big jobs faced by the superintendent and the board is the increasing enrollment. This in- cludes utilizing the building survey conducted by 9- P Superintendent l. l'hillips lllackbiirn Indiana University. Adjusting the entering age of boys and girls for the public schools is also considered. Another problem will be the adjustment of the salaries and wages of school employees to the new 19i3 legislation. This also is the year for textbook adoptions in high school subjects, with the law plac- ing the final decision on the superintendent of schools. The school board is planning improi enients in the school plants in maintenance. .-Xdded to the new library-study hall project, relighting the Reed School building, refurnishing the biology room. making ini- provements in the metal shop, and decorating both school shops have been planned. ln l'?-lb, Nlr. lllackburn's first year as superinten- dent, he started the grade school basketball program. results of which were realized this year by the :Xtre- dales who learned the intricacies of the game by their victories. Showing hott' complicated board business has be- come. formerly .Xliss leila leisis iias bookstore nian- ager, extrascurricular activities treasurer. and book- lieepcl' for tlte superllitentlelit. Now. the laooltlseeping alone has become so complex and much greater in volume th.it it is a full time job for Xliss leitis to keep the books for the school tip to date. 1'.i,,. iz. fa-.if ll Q vi' ' D P' :- M'7 3' . , fr., 5 x 5 -Uk. -. . , .. . . -if? .,--f92lH'S'L ' :fi ' ,:.4A ': ffrw- ?? ,:f-p . ..f:-42:-tagha Ye, 1 :-,ff Ai' -. ,'-Eff .52 . - . .. ,Ai ,V A . r ' sf, .tv 'Q -Q55 ' Y 5?- x A !'-' I ,,,...-- JV 'A ' , . One unit of existence-an hour- means to the student the limits of one class period. It specifies the time in which a six-weeks test must be passed-or failed. Or it may be the gift of a kind teacher who is feeling generous enough to write that pass from a dreary study hall. Queen Velma Linn A rainbow ceiling spiraled down from a crystal chandelier over the heads of prom- goers as they danced to the music of Tommy Phillipis orchestra. Scenes from the story of Cinderella, which surrounded the room, turned the gym into a fairyland ballroom. A buffet supper was served by the P.T.A. on the stage, which was transformed for the occasion into a festive dining room. Colors, Hltered through a prism, radiated in and out as the dancers prom- enaded through the grand march to watch the crowning of Queen Velma. At 11:30 those who had not already left wended their way to the Hartford Theater, where a tape-recorded radio interview and Belles on Their Toes, a motion picture never before shown in lndiana, awaited them. A few songs and door prizes later, the scene shifted to the Elks ballroom, where a night club atmosphere and a South Pacihc theme prevailed. Four o'clock in the morning with formal attire having been ex- changed for jeans, the promenaders troupccl to the American Legion Home for breakfast. Weather interfered with plans to go to the Country Club, so the party was changed to the lzlks, where tired, sleepy, but happy students square danced and ate till 7:00 o'elock. 4 , K wjrrffl. 1l.'i iz rm! -lifwiil uf 1 if 1 fir ,, ,Hifi fi,..1.,t H 1.1 lx.., fIi1.'iX.wf.',1l1 L I I Q ' li! li.1- .ffwifx fw 1 I fi' 4 X' lfv .1r:.f iifnffffi.
