XY'hen the band marched out on the held to display its talents in the first football half-time show this year, they began a series of public performances which will not end until the Memorial Day parade. These performances include pla.ying at concerts given in con- junction with the mixed chorus. providing snappy music for football and basketball games. and appear- ing in the annual elimination contests for both march- ing and concert bands. Most people would probably conclude from second period sounds that a daily rehearsal is the only prep- aration the band makes for an appearanceq actually a band show is the product of much and varied effort. ln order to put on a marching exhibition. for instance, several distinct steps are taken and all must be coor- dinated to achieve the finished product. First the director must plan the entire operation. A theme must be chosen which should be connected in some way with an event that has occurred lately or a recent sig- nificant date. Usually all or part of the show will per- tain to the game itself. The formations used to carry out the theme should be easily readable from the bleachers: and. of course. they must contain the exact number of musicians available. cl3aniel, Klr.Ciraescl1 linstructorj. li. Nlcbritf -I. johnson. I.. Nlcfiollum. ll. Ryan. ml. Ciilland, NlcVickti After all the details have been worked out on paper and the music has been selected, the band begins to rehearse it for the show. Mimeographed sheets with detailed diagrams of each member's part are distrib- uted. and the long hours of marching begin. Later, after the formations have been memorized. the music and marching are combined, and, after a few more polishing practice sessions. the show is ready for use. The actual performance, which is the product of days of labor by dozens of people. usually takes about ten minutes. This year the bandsmen won sixteen firsts in solo and ensemble competition and went into the band contest gunning for their fourth straight trip to the state meet. The contests. which correspond to tour- neys in basketball. require much more work than an ordinary performance, since the band is competing with bands from other schools with highly trained musicians as judges. Younger students also began taking lessons on in- struments. and the junior band was revived this year. At the beginning of the year Seashore Nlusical apti- tude tests were given to 354 students. These tests ac- count for the weird sounds which came from the band room at times other than band period. 171115 flrwilfy-lrflir' ios. P. Whitaker. li. Schriier. Xl. Needlcr. P. Qolfagaad Zhizddazfie Eidmeetatpauc Among Hartford High's many athletic teams is the golf squad of which Glen jones used his training to be the member to get nearest par. This training was received at the Blackford County Country Club. which lent the team clubs and provided use of the course free of charge. When the boys were not practicing driving or put- ting, activities usually directed by Coach NVeeks, they would caddy for the local talent to see how the more nearly pros do it. flmffp Glen jones addresses his ball, while Gail Hornbaker lnziilrllvy follows through on a drive. jack Bates frigbll blasts out of the rough. lI.i'fl1 Tom Lightle tees off for the Hrst green. flligblyp jack Beeson re- ceives some expert caddy assistance from Coach Claude Weeks as he lines up his putt. All the time and practice was for the big swing, the C. I. C. golf meet held at Peru. It was the second time the local boys participated in such a contest. They showed considerable improvement from the pre- vious year by taking third place, lacking only two strokes of getting second. Team members will again receive minor letters for their efforts. This, along with the fact that golf can be played in later years, proved to be reward enough. 1 5 I DUNKIRK 74g PORTLAND ssygg H. At the termination of the 1950 basketball season, Coach Weeks was planning on a team of vets which would include center Bill Perry. Perry, however, be- came disqualified early for high school competition because of his age. This left the team without very much height but made them a smoother running squad because of their having to concentrate more on decep- tive plays and the fast break. Games in which the Airedales' speed made for excellent ball playing were Huntington, New Castle, and Elwood. A little skill practice Hrst is an essential in Weeks method of instituting a new play into the Dales' bag of tricks. Blackboard diagrams imprint a lasting im- pression, and familiarity is gained for a new play by just walking it through. If the play then proves satis- factory, it is worked out to mellow perfection in scrimmage and used finally in actual combat. Now, as fans look forward to the season of '51-'52, they can see another fast ball club with Pickering, Santilli, and Gadbury, all seasoned vets from this year. joe Dodds and Dean Pierson, student managers, pack for an out-of-town game, Wu-N 8 x Mix:-if I . x-TT!! 1? -x , i 1' 4 8 iswimg gl X' V ag 5 v fx. rm, . In tl1e last act aristocratic Leigh Morris storms from the farm house shouting his desire to never see a dashed one of you again. His exit is spoiled, however, when he trips over his valise and falls flat on his face. The play ends happily for the country folk when local belle and beau are retmited. 1lf1f11 ln order to treate appropriate props in the 1931 junior play. Bert Smith looks over her stript. faeecade From September to May a new lnkspot must be published every three weeks. The journalists have strict schedules, and as the time for publication draws near, the Inkspot oilice becomes feverish with activ- ity, as the staffers strive to rate All-American which, incidentally, has been awarded the lnkspot eight con- secutive semesters and has been awarded to only three other schools of the same size in the United States. From the basement comes the growl of the press and click of the Linotype as the printers begin pro- duction. The phone linking the editorial otlice and print shop jangles frequently as it carries the last- minute instructions and queries. At this time teeth gnashing becomes a popular custom. A problem of make-up Qgetting the stories into a given amount of IiIJITORl.lI, S7'.l1'f lTujii ' 746 7mm spacej or some other quirk of the journalistic world may require that a laboriously written story be elim- inated entirely or stripped to bare essentials. For the reporter this means just that much work down the drain and for the editor a quick reconstruction job. For a few moments pencils fly almost as fast as harsh words until the snag is ironed out. On the morning before publication day a strange quiet invades the realm of the fourth estate, and the printers take over in the march toward enlightening the masses. Last- minute changes deteeted by proofreading are incor- porated, and the big press begins to turn out the latest in sports, news, and views. By noon all of the papers have been printed. They are then prepared for distri- bution the following morning. In retrospect it is a little hard for the Retro staff to realize that there are no more deadlines to meet or pictures to mount. All the arguing, gluing, and pos- ing that went into the effort of making this book 'Kthe best ever are finished-but not forgotten. Few stafl members will forget, for instance. the day the Retro room radio was reported missing. Investi- gating editors found no clues, and it was a black day indeed. Photogs remember that they were the first of their clan to use the strobe light which made their job easier but still left .1 hydra-like multitude of pictures to be taken. Almost everyone recalls mounting the pictures meant placing them on dummies qscale size models of each pagej. This required cutting each pic- ture to exact proportion with razor blades that found fingers quite inlirm. Once cut down, the photos were attached to the cardboard with rubber cement. This cement found its way to the tools, fingers, and hair of Retrons with an intelligence all its owng its only redeeming quality was the toxic effect in case Retro work became too exasperating. Not all the memories are of work. There was the dinner given for the seniors by the losing team in magazine sales. and the gab sessions in the Retro room when deadlines weren't pressing. Such is the produc- tion routine of the book that makes memories live. lknu Ourf Assistant photographer ,lim Gadbury, photographer Phil Kingsley, and photography editor Carol Herbaugh take in- ventors of their equipment. Every Thursday morning council members meet with their faculty advisers to discuss one of the current issues of school life. The discussion may concern anything from to- bacco to trigonometry, and the meetings are presided over by the council officers who are elected by the members themselves. ln addition to giving the school chieftains an insight to student ideas and opinions, the S ' yan council undertakes several school service projects. Probably the best known of these is the Red Cross gift boxes which are sent to children in foreign countries every year. Other Student Council projects are the campaigns to keep gum off the desks and feet off the school lawn. Planning the programs which will help relieve the monotony of school is handled by the stu- dent representatives. Money for the programs comes from the concessions stands at basketball and football games. fl'fvjvi'r l.u7'li An informal session of the Student Council in the gym includesgfliou' Oriel Gary Sinclair, Dan Oswalt Cpresidentj. Board of lfducation members, li. P. Blackburn. President Cecil Gough, Treasurer George lfulton. and Secretary Keith WVCDIY, decide on .1 school issue at one of their meetings. Superintendent F. P. Blackburn dictates a letter to his student secretary, Beverly NVilliams. As chief executive of a concern which consists of over 1,000 individuals, Mr. E. Phillips Blackburn, superintendent of the School City of Hartford City, shoulders tasks ranging from acting as inter-agent for the school board and community to checking the many expenditures of the school city. An idea of the magnitude of Mr. Blackburn's work can be gained by a glance through the financial report of the school city for one year. One of these, published last year, casually mentioned such figures as S30l,280, Page 'ninety-two 5250,143, and 5335,-PZ3. lt contained 159 general items. All Mr. Blackburnls work does not involve long range planning. He must also make quick decisions when emergencies ariseg for instance, the dismissal of school during the paralyzing blizzard which swept the Middle NY'est in November, required quick action to get the city's schools back on their feet as soon as pos- sible. In this case, the action was a little too quick to suit some students. 1 I tom Nliss l.cil.1 lxwls. sulmiil lnmril secretary llcfrp, ulicqlss unc nr' her many files.
