V W jo me Wan Mbna! me 3400! Our Constitution makes it the duty of the Gen- eral Assembly to provide,'by law, for a gen- eral and uniform system of common schools, wherein tuition shall be without charge and equally open to all. ' The taxpaying citizen contributes to the sup- port of the school by paying taxes of many types and in many forms-both state and lo- cal. The average student may not realize that the library dictionary he used to look up that hard word was provided by the property tax paid by his father. But our citizen does much more than pay the required taxes. His willing contributions to a hundred school sales projects make possi- ble the spice of school-the extra-curricular activities. Although school could go on with just the routine of classes, the students would miss the advantages of responsibility and fun in producing ai class play, in writing for publi- cations, and in ,thrilling to sports competition. Sale of season tickets, subscriptions, class play and concert admissions are only a few of the solicitations aided by our generous public- spirited citizen. Loyal patrons of the school have made possi- ble a broad and enjoyable education for ap- proximately 1,400 students enrolled this year in the schools of Hartford City. The members of the 1950 RETRO staff grate- fully dedicate this yearbook to these loyal supporters, and hereby dub each one with the well-deserved title of rue gfue Gfizen L .J

Whrrrrl Whrrrrl Firel Fire! No, wait. Don't rush out to see where the big red truck is going, because you would be a little late. ltwas in l897 that the high school building was first gutted by fire, but the walls were left standing and were used for the new building. While construction was being com- pleted, the pupils pursued their studies anywhere-in vacant buildings, homes, churches, city hall, and the court house. Once again the town had a school, which was used until February 6, l903, when it too was destroyed by tire which was said to have started in the school's lab- oratory. There was a strong wind, and again it was too much for the tire depart- ment. The loss of the nineteen-room school and the gymnasium was esti- mated at 535,000 The south section of the present building was constructed in l904. The north section, the old gym, and the swimming pool were added in l9l-4. ln l929 the present gymnasium was erected-last of the major remodeling to a school with an eyentful past.
