Q a Z 3- 5 Q 2 -Q 4. C iii 4 1 I I El-'50 Whrrrrl Whrrrrl Firel Fire! No, wait. Don't rush out to see where the big red truck is going, because you would be a little late. ltwas in l897 that the high school building was first gutted by fire, but the walls were left standing and were used for the new building. While construction was being com- pleted, the pupils pursued their studies anywhere-in vacant buildings, homes, churches, city hall, and the court house. Once again the town had a school, which was used until February 6, l903, when it too was destroyed by tire which was said to have started in the school's lab- oratory. There was a strong wind, and again it was too much for the tire depart- ment. The loss of the nineteen-room school and the gymnasium was esti- mated at 535,000 The south section of the present building was constructed in l904. The north section, the old gym, and the swimming pool were added in l9l-4. ln l929 the present gymnasium was erected-last of the major remodeling to a school with an eyentful past. V W jo me Wan Mbna! me 3400! Our Constitution makes it the duty of the Gen- eral Assembly to provide,'by law, for a gen- eral and uniform system of common schools, wherein tuition shall be without charge and equally open to all. ' The taxpaying citizen contributes to the sup- port of the school by paying taxes of many types and in many forms-both state and lo- cal. The average student may not realize that the library dictionary he used to look up that hard word was provided by the property tax paid by his father. But our citizen does much more than pay the required taxes. His willing contributions to a hundred school sales projects make possi- ble the spice of school-the extra-curricular activities. Although school could go on with just the routine of classes, the students would miss the advantages of responsibility and fun in producing ai class play, in writing for publi- cations, and in ,thrilling to sports competition. Sale of season tickets, subscriptions, class play and concert admissions are only a few of the solicitations aided by our generous public- spirited citizen. Loyal patrons of the school have made possi- ble a broad and enjoyable education for ap- proximately 1,400 students enrolled this year in the schools of Hartford City. The members of the 1950 RETRO staff grate- fully dedicate this yearbook to these loyal supporters, and hereby dub each one with the well-deserved title of rue gfue Gfizen L .J mxnnon SULICITHTIUH our 1950 mira Confairw Administration - Classroom Work - Band - Glee Clubs - Faculty - Class Officers and Sponsors - Classes - Student Council - Curricular Clubs - School Life. ' s The detailed task of budget- ing and appropriating the tax funds' provided by True Blue Citizens falls to the Board of Education, shown here in one of their meetings with Supt. E. P. But to realize the thrill of diploma day, you must be exposed to innumerable experiences provided by those tax dollars. Your classroom instruction is paid from this source. The library from which you get your history report, the band which thrills you at ball games, the chorus whose carols stimulate that Christmas spirit, and all the thousand daily school incidents from loafing to learning are provided by that big-hearted collective public figure, the tax- paying TRUE BLUE CITIZEN. So, for the many benefits pictured within this section, we say sincerely, humbly, and loudly- Thanlqs, T. B, C. lCl . AC,?T 1.? F aw , . Q 5f'IQjZQ'i:' , x .K :I QI' I x ,-Xxx 3 7 M, . .. Physics students learn pulleys are used be- cause they provide me- chanical advantages and because they change the direction of force. Miriam Baker is learning to improve her diction by making a recording of it, then listening to the play- back. jerry Davis holds the mike for her while jill Shaw tunes the recorder. Following the script is Bill Hammond while Bill Bobo, also in Mrs. Wallace's class, looks on. In the school print shop, which is supervised by Mr. Edgar Henderson, Don Snyder feeds the iob press while Ollie Furnish is busy checking pads of office forms. Bill Robertson has learned to saw a piece of wood without splitting it, under the super- vision of Mr. john Carbone. The boys make small pieces of furniture, such as stands and bookcases, as well as making repairs on the building. While discussing nature in all its glory, Mr. Robert Anderson, biology instructor, shows Theresa Norris, Faith Ann Hile, Sylvia Over- myer, Eddie Schermerhorn, and Harold Hiser what an ivy leaf looks like. Learning the job might well be the motto of student teacher Miss Elaine Lacey, from Ball State College. In the advanced shorthand class she is pointing out a few characters writ- ten by the girls in shorthand. 0 Future twirlers start young to learn to do just right. Rita Rathburn here watches drum major Betty Markin give a baton lesson to her nephew, Larry Crump, Waiting their turn are Sandra Kirkwood and lean Lipp. 0 Ruth Mary Ward, editor, and Rena jones, assistant, recheck the copy that has been writ- ten for the forthcoming issue of the lnkdrip, junior high publication. Make-up editor Bobby Cavanaugh discusses the layout with Miss Mabel Fee, adviser to the staff and English instructor. o Preparing for their next appearance at the half-time musical display, Director Harlan Kerlin takes the band through its scales, meas- ures, sharps and flats on into the marches, popular tunes and classical selections. o To promote better understanding of past, present, and future events of the world, the school program includes audio-visual educa- tion. Watching a movie on social studies here is Miss Ruth Cole's history class. 0 lTopl Starting out on their careers in music early in their school life are these junior high vocalists. Under the able direction of Miss Esther Nesbit, they go singing along. 0 lCenterl According to the Dewey Decimal system, books and cards should be kept in a particular order. Aiding Miss Edith Chalfant in this endeavor are Marilyn Myers and Connie Strine, who are just two of the eleven student librarians. 0 lBottom Rightl During the sum- mer the school still goes on. Pursuing knowl- edge of the fine art of sewing are the girls of the summer clothing class. Miss Margaret Schaefer supervises the stitching. 0 lBottom Leftl Snipl Snipl Snipl Busily Madonna Schultz and Carolyn Coats take the first step in mak- ing their dresses. From the first appearance of the band at the football games until the last strains of Pomp and Circumstancen fade away, the band, made up of fifty-four members, is one busy group. Entering in contests is an important activity of the band. In the l949-50 school year they won first division in a marching contest at Auburn in a Class B rating. Approximately twenty- five members entered the solo and ensemble contest at Ko- komo, with nearly twenty placing in first division. Later the group won first division in the district contest held in Hartford City. Betty Markin, drum major, struts, twirls, and leads for the band. Zi i 6 One, two, three, four- . sing! Sending boxes overseas to needy children is an annual project of the Council, which also sponsors several clean-up days to make the school buildings and lawn look better. Student problems occupy a major part in the business of the twenty-tour Student Council representatives, who meet on Thursday morn- ing ot each week. The Council, led by Mr. Walter Pearson, Mr. Myron Clark, and Miss Margaret Schaefer, also annually holds a cir- cus, all free, which students attend in large numbers. Dairy lunches, sports of all kinds, class plays, band concerts, and pub- lications work would find no place in school life if it were not for extra contributions made by the TRUE BLUE ClTlZEN, Not only recreation and pastimes are pro- vided but also responsibility, leadership, honesty, and hidden abilities are discov- ered through activities resulting from the coins tossed in the direction of the school by generous citizens solicited for a hundred and one projects. These benefits-and good times-could not possibly be gained just by reading all the books assigned by the teachers-even with A in all lessons. This section of this book features school activities whose existence is due chiefly to solicitations and sales of vari- ous kinds during the school year. 62 A, , . . w x 4 as Egg Q 'w w kx way, V 4 if .
