I waited with great joy to mock Because you were so Iaie. O SLEEPY SAM I Iauqhed to watch you nod your head, Now Iost to early ties. Then quickly from your seat I fled! I knew that you'd not rise. ,Ay H12 . I I It took a war to introduce us to the char- acter that we had been looking for during all our school life. The war finally furnished somebody to take the blame for all our errors and misdemeanors: ah, yes-the grem- lin in its various forms. You've heard about the gremlin on the production front. You know how he screws the nuts in the wrong place. And the grem- lin is responsible for just as much trouble on the warfront. He drills a hole in the gas tank just when one of our boys goes into a power dive. Well, we have his brothers who cause plenty of troubles in our illustrious educational institution. Do you know why lim was sleeping dur- ing that profound lecture? Do you know why Evelyn pulled her gum out of her pretty mouth in English class and caused the wrath of our ever-understanding instructor to des- cend upon her? It's unnecessary to cite more examples: you know 'how to feel for us now. It was all the gremlin's fault. But with the kind assistance of our facul- ty we're beating those gremlins. In every department of our school we have them on the run. Yes, grernlins with their impish tricks can't remain long when the alert stu- dents of Hartford High decide to rid our school of all traces of these elfish fiends. Lfifgf W- ,546 William Allingham in his poem The Fairies 5 T, 5 if wrote this stanza: elgff Up the airy mountain, Down the rush glen, We daren't go a-hunting For fear of little men, Wee folk, good folk, 'Trooping all together: Green jacket, red cap, And White oWl's feather! The little men mentioned therein were once thought of as vexatious pixies. Now We regard them as gremlins. Their Women folk are fifinellas and their children are widgets, Some gremlins are rollicking and fun-loving: others are mischievous and take elfish delight in tempting us or causing us to fail to meet ex- pectations. How convenient to say the gremlins are responsible for failure to arrive at school on timeg for failure to complete assignments on time, for failure to be attentive: for failure to maintain good health, for failure to triumph in an athletic contest. May We hope for all the pupils and friends of Hartford High a closer acquaintance with the more serious and good-natured gremlins so that there may be better hunting in 1945. Clifford L. Henderson obey WaLer5 Mr. loseph Wagner has advanc- ed a progressive educational pro- gram in our school during his past seven years as a very efficient super- visor. His beneficial services and successful undertakings have thor- oughly shown that he is well quali- fied for his position of leadership in administration. His exceptionally pleasing personality has not only made him exceedingly popular with the other faculty members and the student body, but with the rest of the community as well. He -has patient- ly, diligently, and enthusiastically helped to put over our civilian de- fense program in this city. His wis- dom and business efficiency are shown by our systematic school man- agement and supervision. As another school year passes and we bring to our minds those who are responsible for making it a happy and successful one, we must acknowl- edge a debt to the Board of Educa- tion. The three members-Mr. Ray- mond Maddox, Mr. Elmer Lucas, and Mr. George Fulton ta new mernberle have worked continually and thor- oughly for the betterment of the edu- cational system, Each has labored untiringly for the welfare of the stu- dents. These men, each an expert in his own business, have united for the success of our education. They have practiced economy, yet planned pro- gressively. Miss Leila Lewis, secretary to the board, is also to be thanked. She has executed her duties excellently, ounae 0l'ri ln his first year with us Mr. Pribble has gained the hearty cooperation and support of the student body and faculty. He has proved that he is very capable and has unusual ability for leadership. As principal of our school, even though his time is so valuable, we have found him always ready to help us with our individual difficulties. Mr. Pribble has a special manner that makes the students feel they are really a part of the school and should contribute accordingly. Our principals prime interest is in enabling the youth of the community to obtain a well-rounded education that will fit them for life in the :omplex world of today. Miss Borden, our assistant principal and per- sonal adviser, has not only given us the en- couragement we have needed but has also guided us in steps to be taken in our future lives. She has analyzed our problems individually and helped us in their solution according to our own personalities. She has taken part in all war- time activities and has followed the course that she has set for us, providing an excellent example. Her personal associations with us have gained her the true friendship of all. She has given support to our extra-curricular activities and has helped to make them huge suc- cesses. To her we students of the Senior Class owe mucheher who has given so much towards our goals and asked so little in return. l 9 jCLCbL ROBERT AUSTIN General Metals, Machine Shop, Auto Mechanics. B. Yes, when I'm down there near your keys, I sure do keep you guessing. A You'll be late for class! What's our as- signment for today? Let's move on! Don't clutter up the halls. These are familiar phrases between classes at Hartford City High School, Classes begin at 8:20 in the morning. A full day contains seven periods, each of which is 55 minutes in length. A five-minute passing period is given between the classes. We are given an hour and twenty minutes for lunch. School ends at 4:00 in the afternoon. At the beginning of each period attendance is taken and all important announcements per- taining to class are made previous to the day's recitation. Some classes are divided into two parts, the first half given to recitation of the lesson previously assigned and the last half to study for the lesson for the coming day. However, most classes are given over to recitation for the com- plete period, as everyone's schedule is arranged to give the student study periods throughout the week. A variety of subjects is offered the pupil of our high school. Each individual signs for a definite course at the beginning of a semester and follows that course in choosing his subjects. Mathematics, English, science, history, commerce, and such usual subjects are offered. Extra elec- tives include music, art, shop-work, home eco- nomics, and health. The school year is divided into two parts called semesters and they in turn are divided into periods of 6 weeks, of which there are three. At the end of each six-week period a report on your progress in each subject is given. To the youth these portals of learning have been given: so may the youth enrich its mind for the future. ZH Q-W We, the students of Hartford High, be- lieve in developing our social as Well as intellectual skills, Our clubs, musical organ- izations, and athletic groups provide this op- portunity. Here We meet those with whom We have interests in common. We share in experience, and profit from the exchange of ideas. Here we find our natural abilities and hidden talents. Here We choose the interests that will have such importance in our future lives. In these groups we mix business and pleasure and prove that it works. Yes, We have pleasant, enjoyable times together, but at the same time We have a serious purpose -the development of our minds and bodies. Clubs keep the school routine from be- coming monotony and drudgery. Here we recover our cheerful smiles and carefree personalities after a slow, hard day of con- centration and study. Some groups contribute in a particular Way to the morale of the Whole student body by their activities, for instance, the athletic division. We all enter into the alma mater spirit at a basketball or baseball game. Of course, all groups influence the morale of the group as a Whole by the effect that they wield upon members. i Yes, no matter in what direction our in- terests lie, there is an organization in Hart- ford High Where We can further our educa- tion on the matter and be associated with the people who have ideas in common with ours. The climax of the year's gala occasion, the prom, was innaugurated by the dignified president ofa thrilled junior class placing the traditional crown of flowers on the head of the 1943 prom queen, Betty Canter. Do you remember back in the dark past when at the mention of basketball we had a vague idea of an inflated sphere carried in a basket? Then came the fateful year when we entered the realm of the institution of higher education. Basketball became an ideal in life, a constant thought, a major joy. Although your minds had been crowded and drugged with thoughts of English and algebra, all is forgotten on Friday night. As you attempt to enter the gym, members of the junior class suddenly descend upon you and tear your coat from your back, leaving you only a slip of paper minus five cents. Soon comes the tipoff, and the ball game is under way. The teams race up and down the floor, baskets are scored, whistles blow, and the crowd drives itself into a frenzy. Time out, and the yell leaders go into action in an attempt to out-yell the opposing fans. Midway the band displays its talents as the crowd collects itself for the final moments. As play resumes, we have more of the same4only more so. The only ones in the gym who retain their sanity are the players themselves. Look, a foul! About ten seconds: there's the gun! Say, who won the game? Are you kidding, mister? Hartford City, of course! CAlN: Ioe's height made him especially Valuable under the backboards. Although slowed by illness midway in the sea- son, he was always counted upon for a hard game at for- ward. loe is a senior. ALLIVION: Gaining experience early in the season, Iim earn- ed himself a place on the varsity. lim is a senior and his skill on left handed shots will be added to the want- ed list for next season, BECKLEY: lack is noted for playing a tough game from start to finish. Iack's special ability on long shots from the side will be missed next year, IOHNSON: Monk , our tall center and captain, is in there fighting every game. He is high point man and will be missed next year. 31118612 QOOJ l VERONA: Gus played both forward and center positions. He could always be counted upon for baskets and will be missed next year as he is a senior. ANDERSON : Dick was always a high-light of the game. His drive and scoring ability were both outstanding and he will be hard to replace next year. GILLAND: Snake usually played a guard position on the second team. Harold showed much ability both on offense and defense. He is a sophomore, allowing two more productive years. LANDIS: Bill's long one was a special thrill of every game. With ability both on offense and defense, he prom- ises to be of exceptional Value in 1945. ...,4m! flue LUZADDER: Although a jun- ior, Dudley earned himself a regular place in every game. His dependability was always a steadying influence to the squad. TAYLOR: Dick usually play- ed on the second team but at various times he broke in- to the varsity line-up. His height and ability should be of great advantage to the fu- ture Airedales. PETTIT: Gene is a junior and, considering his height and shooting ability, he promises to fill one of the graduation gaps. TUCKER: In a forward posi- tion, Melvin is always on the ball and was a regular scorer with his famous one- hand over-head shot. Tuck has another great year ahead. 01211 .' mx X 11,95 M0-ffff F F First Row: Bob Rice, Harold Gilland, Dick Cain, Bill Lamott, Bill Davis. Although the track team had no track on which to work out, the squad proved itself very worthy of recogni- tion. The Airedales defeated the Bluffton Tigers in their first dual meet, and the next week defeated the Montpelier Pacers. The thinlies placed fourth in the Northeastern Indiana Conference track and field meet held at Auburn. Gardner, Dorton, Dolan, Rodgers, and Pember- ton took part in the sectional held at Muncie later in the season. Rodgers was the only winner for Hartford City in the sectional, triumphing in the mile run. Rodgers led the field of other runners most of the way, but was finally edged out by Wilbur Stairs of New Castle, one of the state's best at the distance. Stairs won third in the state finals held at Technical High School at Indianapolis. Rodgers qualified for the state track meet at Indianapolis by taking second place in the sectional. A total of l27 athletes from eleven schools was certified for the Muncie sectional, so the competition was very great. Gardner was outstanding in every meet. Among his wins were two firsts and four seconds, and he participated in the IOU-yard dash, 220-yard dash, the broad jump, and was a member of the one-half mile and mile relay teams. He was the most versatile individual on the team, Dorton won the most firsts of any individual runner. He won first in the 440-yard run at Bluffton and Montpelier and took the only Hartford City first in the N.E.I.C. at Auburn. He was narrowly edged out in the Muncie sectional. Dolan and Pemberton were also excellent trackmen. Dolan was fast and had consistent enthusiasm. He helped to urge on the others, too. y'MOJUCf5 V f'!,l -. Q,,.tt tixxffle Which one's loe? We bring our gang in full force, shout the ring teader's name for president, immediately close the nominations, send the Whips along to round up votes-and were in good for the year.
