Behind every successful musical organiza- tion there must be a conductor who is willing to give untiringly in his effort to blend the feel- ings, interpretation, and desire of each separate member into a modulated whole. ln Mr. Wagner we find all the necessary qualities of leadership plus a patriotism that each of the pupils would do well to follow. Every successive civilian defense measure has found Mr. Wagner ever a more eager and valuable servant to his country. He has asked nothing of the students that he has not given a hundred-fold himself. The prime factor of a well organized school is a perfectly operating School Board. We have been unusually fortunate this year in having a board of such fine, competent business men whose every thought is for the welfare of H. C. H. S. Dennis Guy has served conscientiously as president of the Board for 1943. Secretary Raymond Maddox has carried on efficiently this term . Elmer Lucas has continued another successful year as Treasurer of the School Board. Miss Lelia Lewis has served as clerk of the School Board for many years. This in itself speaks for her efficiency and competency. Ill? llllll I llY'I'lIi I Every outstanding production owes a great share of its success to its backer, Without his aid and direction through the trying months, it could never hope to have a lasting run. We of Hartford High School look to Mr. Good as our backer and gratefully thank him for his pa- tient work in turning us amateurs into stars. With- out his good judgment in the rearrangement of our program, this production would long ago have gone on the rocks. lt is a very comforting feeling to know that there is someone behind us who is forever looking out for the good of his stars. There are always those assistant directors behind the great symphonies, who eagerly share the burden of smoothing the weird sounds of the practice rehearsal into harmonious accord, a sym- phony of real merit. Our assistant director, Miss Borden, has patiently listened to our wails and dis- couragement, and has conscientiously cheered us on. Her interest in us has been directed both toward our present and future welfare. She has aimed for just a little more perfection in each player than most assistant directors dare dream of. We hope she has hit her mark and we shall do our best to prove it in our future careers. We have come to this school for four years long lEVGI'1 though at times we thought it was wrongly Our teachers dear were much concerned And tried to see that We studied and learned. We tried at times our best to be, But 'twas sometimes hard for our teachers to see. They would scold and stand us in the hallf And we knew then our grades would fall. But we must not be always sad For we can think of good times had And as we leave this school so proud We will shout its praise, grand and loud. Motto: Labor Conquers All. Colors: Blue and White. Flower: Peony CLASS SIING lWords and music by Martha Willmanl We're sorry to say good-bye To dear old Hartford High, But through the world We must wend our way And all must do their part. We're all amidst a tragedy Heard all the world around, So we must use our education In the air or on the ground. We'll miss all your happy faces And all our teachers dear, Miss junior proms and class plays And all our friends with tears. But there's a job that we must do As all of you know, too. We'll make you hear of us: We'll make you proud of us, Dear old Hartford High! THE CLASS 0F 1943 Wasn't it some old and wise sage -a Greek philosopher, perhapsnwho said, There will be a time when a body of seniors shall rise and put the whole world 'strictly on the beam '? And maybe it was Galileo who looked to the stars and shouted, Behold! I see in the future a senior class that is really 'hep'! Wise men through the ages have kept their eyes peeled on the future and their noses in every classroom, unquestionably in quest of this superior society of seniors. But this senior class slipped up on them. Not intentionally though eoh, no! They have been attempting since the first grade to con- vince their conductors of their super-intellect. The cause has become so desperate during this, their last year, that some ot the more courageous and daring have donned those un- touchable, droopy, white symbols of senority. Certain individuals ipractically the whole class, as a matter of factl have thrown aside their usual role of dignity and are cast as slap- tiappyf' iWhat price one will pay for suc- cessll But alas! The senior cords have long since passed the stage of tattle-tale gray. The seniors have grown slap-happy -and not voluntarily. Underclassmen fthe lowest form of humanity? have ceased bowing, and will inherit the right to dominate the next under- classmen. President . .,.,.,,. Ray Pemberton Vice-President .... Intonation! The old saying of the music teacher that practice makes perfect certainly proves itself. For after rehearsing and practicing for four years, the Senior Class of 1943 emerged with better tone quality and with more rhythm in which to step into the world for their biggest concert of all-their future. In our freshman year, our tempo was at a moderate rate. Miss Elzey and Mr. Kran- ing were our conductors and we moved along smoothly with President Bob Murphy, vice president, Rosalie Iohnsony secretary, Hugh Scott, and treasurer, Helen Honey. Our sophomore year came, and we began improving. Our tones became clearer as Mr. Warner and Mrs. Duncan held the batons. Officers were: President, Hugh Scott, vice president, Evelyn Ann Scheidler: secretary, Rosalie Iohnson: and treasurer, Gerry Needler. As the junior year rolled around, the tempo began to be more rapid. Mr. Billiard and Miss Elzey were our conductors and our officers were: President, Hugh Scott: vice presi- dent, Evelyn Ann Scheidler: secretary, Gerry Needler, and treasurer, Larry Schweier. The spotlight glimmered on the Iunior-Senior Prom and Banquet at the close of the year, while the class play impressed its notes also. Then came the big year! Mr. Mahin and Mrs. Williamson raised their batons! Ray Pemberton was president, Iohn Brothers, vice president: Rhea Stroble, secretary: and Betty Bennett, treasurer. The tempo moved faster and faster! Senior Carnival! Benefit show! Class Play! Prom! Banquet! And then all was still-graduation. Thus ended the Senior Class of 1943 concerts. Now, the members must move into the world as individual instrumentalists, each playing his own part in the biggest symphony of all--3'The Symphony of Freedom! ll0NOB Il0LL Evelyn Ann Scheidler Clifford Risley Hugh Scott Marjorie Hardwick lack Dolan Ruth Hubbard Robert Murphy William Maddox Relda Needler Robert Bonham Tom Field Violet Sills Helen Honey Iohn Sills Esther Gosnell Robert Telle Betty Bennett Robert Clark Mac Myers Willadene Biclcel lack Burns Rhea Stroble Patricia Ann McCaffrey Geraldine Royce Mary Ieanne Franklin Allan Maddox lohn Brothers Sam Townsend Virginia Iohnson Patricia Crouse Dean Helms Iunior Ford Larry Schweier Lawrence Wilcox Alice Howard Mary Alice Carll Robert Secrest Sarah Harvey Ida Girod Martha Willman in Cecilia Pursley Robert Knoderer Gloria Pruden Mary Wrestler Merril Stanley Robert Overmyer Paul Guy Lucinda Maddox Charles Michael Richard Wolfe Rose Marie Pique Everett Stroud t SENIIIII SNA S A quartet of G. President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Sponsors U6 THE CLASS 0F 1944 The freshmen may be fresh, the sophomores, brilliant, and the seniors, superior: but one class, although nothing in particular, is a cross-section ol everything. This distinction tyou should have guessed? belongs to the juniors. A close survey ot this society will reveal some realism. This usually appears at grade card time, when there is a rush to uncover the cutters ot citizenship, or during a financial crisis such as a sinking fund, which brings out the ticket salesmen. But their optimism is the thing. The jive talk they give out, the cokes they down, and the latest boy friend gossip Che's Hsuperlwl make their lack of dignity an art. These juniors are kids who find pleasure in going into contortions over luke Box Saturday Night . luniors are next years seniors and may their attitude not be stunted by the tact. lt's their kind youth with new ideas that makes the world tick. The Hartford City High School Symphonettel tlsn't that name classical?l And the music fit is just as strik- ing! lf you could hear the organization, you would think it almost comparable to the New York Symphony, with its sweet, melodious, soothing, classical music. The director is Elwin LeRoy Brittan. He is patiently working to improve the tone quality, dynamics, and style of his future Heifitz or Artie Shaw. Mr. Brittan Strike Up the Band -and we don't mean Alexan- der's Rag Time Band. We are speaking of the old gold and black Schoolegianse fthe seventy-five piece musical organization known as the Hartford City High School Band. This group has won unusual praise at all school and public functions. They strut and they play their programs ranging from the sacred and classical to jazz, swing rhythm, and Sousa's marches, and, at times, they have stooped even to the rhumba and conga. They have also rhythm in their collective and indi- vidual soles. Flashing down the street on dress parade, with snappy drum majorettes and classy flag twirlers, the band makes an appearance rivaling that of royalty: and truly the band is composed of kings and queens of the realm of music. irector Instrumental music means a great deal to our school. lt has been furthered by the capable work of Mr. Brittan. Our thanks go to him for his co-operative spirit and skill- ful direction. unior and First row: D. Snow, C. Hildebrand, S. Mon- roo, S. Hyde, B. Ayres, K. Williams, M. Amos, L. Lake, B. Needler, H. They all enjoy the playing and marching which enables them to secure ring side seats at the ball games. The whole band, ranging from the tuba to the piccolo and from the cymbals to the marimba, plays classical as well as college marches for their performances. Although they have not advanced to the rhumba stage, they are well on the way, not only in rhumba, but also to the vacant chairs left in the Senior Band by the twenty-two graduating members. The vibrant voices of the Girls' Glee Club can still be heard echoing through the halls of Hartford City High every Tuesday and Thursday morning, and behind the closed doors of the various classrooms drowsy students are brought from their stupor. After a few bars, however, they are revived, especially when the Glee Club's prodigy hits a high Seriously, though, our Girls' Glee Club is superb in their mastery of vocalization, and deserves a bouquet from all students. S' ee Club Glee Club is an appropriate name for this organi- zation ot young male voices. They open blue Monday mornings with a song. Their repertoire ranges from My Old Kentucky Home to This ls the Army, Mr. Iones : and it must be said that each mood and variety is done equally well. After weeks of planning, of untiring labor, of excited anticipation, the great night finally arrived. As the juniors and seniors Know transformed from their usual casual appearance into models of fashion? stepped into a gym of South American gayety, Allan Hoff and his troubadors serenaded them. All were in the mood dancing, talking, and thoroughly enjoying the biggest event of their junior year. Suddenly the center of attraction was focused on the crowning of our tangerine, Rhea Stroble, Queen of the Ball. Then she and Hugh Scott, presiv dent of the iunior class, led the Grand March. After several hours had passed, we sadly realized that our prom must end. But we juniors were lucky: we had another year to look forward to. 11111111111 111,11111n1C1 1111111181111 111111111111 111111K7111 1111111 nvrk 1 111111111111 111111111111 111111119111 111111111111 12111111111 SBRSIIIIQS ecard Mo1111n1Q1i1v1 111 WC1ITL?I1 311 13111115 11V111111:1111 38 1f1111111111v111O 1511 131111111111 38 111.
