VVe started from the Hartford City High School hangar at 8:30 one morning. As searchlights to guide us on our first lap, which was our fresh- man year, vve elected Ray Lenon, presidentg Richard Dee, vice-president: George Sparks, secretaryg and June Dennison, treasurer. Each con- testant received new energy and enthusiasm when a ray of sunshine in the form of a party held at the Washington Inn crossed our path. Miss Fosher and Mr. Warner as guardian angels kept us posted by radio con- cerning the weather conditions, including cyclones and electric storms. On our second lap, the sophomore year, Robert Place, president: Richard Dee, vice-president: Margaret Labig, secretaryg and Helen Gar- diner, treasurer, acted as our search lights and guiding posts. Each of us was inspired to put forth greater effort when we learned of our suc- cess in winning the 1931 Retro Campaign: but the boys were lagging a little, and to prove they were not to be beaten, gave a party for the girls, with music from our dear old Alma Mater to entertain us. To relieve our former guides we were again forced to elect new search lights on our third lap, the junior year: Robert Place, president. Betty Hill, vice-president, Ruth Snell, secretary, and Kenneth Dorton, treasurer. At this same time Miss Furney took the place of Miss Fosher as weather forecaster. As tokens of our identities as contestants in this race, we each ob- tained a ring to mark us the rest of our days. We scored a marked vic- tory, aided by several sophomore and senior fans, in the successful pro- duction of a musical comedy, Page the Prince. At the end of this lap we entertained our senior friends at a dinner-dance, the junior-sen- ior prom. Q NVhen we started on the last lap of our journey, we had just about a hundred contestants, the rest having been lost in smash-ups, mix-ups, and crack-ups, none being very serious. On this lap NVarren Atkinson, president: Harold Shoemaker, vice-presidentg Yula Minneman, secre- tary and Helen Gardiner treasurer acted as our search lights. To obtain money to continue this Journey vve held a magazine subscription campaign gave a class plav and sold candv Berny Bates and Maro Pursley were our ever faithful candy girls To let our fans know that everything was O lx and that vve appreciated their unfailing support we entertained a large number of them with The Big Broadcast, an impersonation of some of the famous radio stars Having made a good beginning aftei the Class Day Baccalaureate, and Commencement exercises we departed to continue our long journey of life around the vvorld alone by N' l gi L1 f ,-, 1 3 ' , , . We think this is a very good showing, and we're proud of the Airedales. Regional' Tourney By winning the Portland sectional, Hartford City was given the right to represent this section at Fort VVayne. Playing Huntington in the first game of the afternoon, Hartford City won by a wide margin. Bohr and Kellogg were the high-lights of this game, and they were highly commended by all. By virtue of their victory over Huntington, Hartford City played in the final against North Side, the winner of the game between North Side and Bluffton. In a heart-rending battle the Airedales went down in de- feat, 35 to 40. Every member of the squad played his bestg and it is hard to pick an outstanding player, although Baugher was high point man. This year the Dramatic Club has held weekly meetings at which plays of various types have been read and presented. Four plays have been given for various programs during the year. They are Edna Higgins Strachan's plays, Three Potatoes for Mary. and Weinies on Wednesday? Flash-Bacl-L, by Anna Best Joderg and With The Help of Pierrette by John Shaner. The social activities of the club during the year were a carry-in supper in December, a chili supper in March, and a Weiner roast in May. We owe our success and our many happy and profitable hours to the untiring efforts of our director Miss Ruth Cole. c'-'TQ T --., I. One of the outstanding organizations of the high school this year was the girls' sex- tette under the direction of Miss Nesbit. Alfred Markin, as accompanist, added to the programs with his clever pianologues. New uniforms consisting of black dresses with white or orange collar and cuff sets were adopted by the girls. Programs by the sex- tette were much in demand throughout the year, both for school programs and for clubs. Under the supervision of Miss Nesbitt, the boys' and girls' glee clubs are just com- pleting a very active and successful season. Both clubs have made several public appear- ancis and have won favorable comment. From the boys' club, eight were selected to form a double quartette. They first ap- peared before the Rotary Club, March 27. This group and the sextette united to repre- scnt the school in the Music Festival, at Ball State, on May 11. Both glee clubs contributed generously to a splendid Christmas Cantata and fur- nished several numbers for the commencement exercises. ! iii: ' E, 5' 1 'leer ri. Big Broadcast Wednesday, February 22, brought something entirely diiierent in the way of high school class productions, when the seniors staged the Big Broadcast. Crazy announce- ments and clever imitations of famous radio stars from a stage cleverly arranged easily aroused the laughter and hearty applause of the audience. As a show, the Big Broadcast was pleasantly entertainingg and as a broadcast, all it needed was a transmitter. If one could have peered into the control room he would have seen the banks of meters, dials, and switches which facilitated the operator's control over the power amplifier and its system of loud speakers. The background itself was a maze of hundreds of variously colored concentric cir- ' cles. This modernistic design helped to make the Big Broadcast distinctively different. Hope Waters won first place in the district Latin Contest held at Muncie. Consequently she took part in the State Latin Contest at Bloomington in April and won sixth place. Jane Stinson was fourth in the District Contest. Martha E. Huff saved the life of a little boy, who had fallen over a bridge into the water below. For this deed she received an award from the Marion Lions' Club. The Kiwanians also are endeavoring to get her the Carnegie medalq The Acapella Chorus, under the direction of Miss Nesbit, took part in a music festival at Ball State Teachers College in May. Jane Stinson, with her average of 96.55 for four years' work, had the honor of being valedictorian for her class. Consequently Jane won the girls' K. B. F. award, a beautiful gold pin given annually by the lo- cal Kiwanians for scholastic merit. Ruth Thompson, who was second with an average of 96.4fR, was salutatorian. Harold Shoemaker won the boys' K. B. F. award for 1933. Kenneth Dorton was awarded the Kiwanis Sportsmanship Trophy of 1933, for being the best athlete with the best scholastic record. RETRO CAMPAIGN The 1933 Retro Campaign started on March 13, and continued through until April 14. The sales were posted daily and at the close of the campaign the juniors had won. As an award they were presented with an attractive banner. The seniors did not compete with the underclassmen, but were di- vided into two teams. The team under the direction of George Sparks and Betty Henze vi on the contest. The following students received a Retro free for s lling ten or more: George Williams Evelyn Roberds Betty Henze Glenoma Binkley, Rob- ert Place and Paul Brothers.
