The most spectacular of all was the completion of our new sports complex. The football team played well on the new field and the crowd was able to watch the score on the new electronic scoreboard. A beautiful hand-painted Pirate, made and donated by Mrs. Louise Olson, set off the new press box, and a sign welcoming everyone to the home of the Pirates offered a friendly greeting to the community and the visiting schools. Inside the school other Pirate teams benefited from the new lighting in the gym. The cheerleaders looked better than ever in their new uniforms. The most obvious change in the school was the installation of new energy efficient windows. These windows are expected to cut the cost of heating and in case of a fire provide an easy escape route. To top it all off our much needed and appreciated janitors have a new look thanks to their great tan uniforms. These improvements in our school show that the best can still get better! The teams had a jump on the season by getting started earlier than in the past and the athletes were willing to work hard and cooperate throughout the entire season. Eric Fleet, Cathy Ackley, and Jennifer Syer were selected as the All Conference runners of the season for Hart. However the team had their own contest going on and Tom Johnson and JoAnne Merrill were voted as the most improved runners, and Branden Michael and Cathy Ackley were voted as the most valuable members. Denise DeBard and Karen Sibley were managers once again. When asked what Coach Dave DuMonte liked most about working with the team he replied, They came together as a family and I felt this attributed to part of their success and they also worked hard all year and never gave up. The girls were down by 11 points at the half, but came back strong the second half. Their determination paid off as they led Shelby at the end of the 4th quarter, then in over time the girls hung on and won the game against their rivals 42-39 . While trying out, the perspective cheerleader was judged on poise, smile, stunt, one required jump and one of their own choice, a spirit poster, a group learned cheer, and an original cheer. Before the football players started practicing, the football cheerleaders were off to camp learning new cheers and stunts. While there, they took fourth and fifth place in the United States Cheerleading Association Competition. The cheerleaders put on the Sweethearts Ball, sold carnations, computer matchups, and spirit pins to help pay for the new markers, and other needs. Thanks to these markers, there was an abundant supply of spirit posters on hand for all the fall and winter sports. Lots of time and preparation went into the pep assemblies, and according to Miss Elenbaas, were the best we've had yet! Jv's Have Tough Season The J.V. Football squad, consisting mostly of first year players, had a disappointing season going 2-6 for the year. But head coach Ted Bailey is certain that next years team will bounce back because, “Many of the players got valuable playing time because of injuries in key areas. Mr. Bailey, who has been coaching football at Hart for 13 years, shares the job with assistants Jim Lamie and Jim Fry. They try to reflect their own playing experiences from high school and college on the kids. The most memorable game, in his opinion was, Our two wins. The team had a load of talent with 14 seniors, 4 of which were all-conference nominees, with Andy Willet and Phil Hennrick receiving the honors on defense. The lone junior candidate was Brett Mikkelson. Willet also made first all-area team and 2nd all-state team on offense as a guard. Head coach Dave Willet, who has been coaching the team for three seasons now, says that his most improved player was Bill Dodds, but praised the entire team for their pride and determination. He also said that their fourth quarter motivation was much better this year. The most memorable game was, North Muskegon, because it made our winning season possible. The team selected Michelle Martin and Kris Carlson to be the co-captains throughout the year. Michelle Martin was also selected as the Best-All-Around Player along with Carmen Dobslaw and Kathy Markham. The best servers were Aimee Ramsyer and Kathy Markham and the best setting honors went out to Carmen Dobslaw and Barb Olson. Kathy Markham also received recognition for being the best spiker. Michelle Martin and Kris Carlson captured the title of team clowns. When asked what game was most memorable, coach Brandel replied, The last Parent Night game against Montague, it was a super game and I knew they could do it! The game of volleyball is not yet a big spectator sport at Hart High but as the varsity volleyball team has proven it is rapidly becoming a more challenging and exciting sport. Every season has its ups and downs and this year was no exception. The lady pirates finished their season with a 19-18 overall record and a 6-8 conference record. A second place trophy from the West Shore Invitational was a reward well deserved. The co-captains of the team were Denise DeBardand Jackie Jacobs, working under the guidance of coach Jan Brandel. Bev and Yvonne Schaner were voted as the teams most valuable players and Brenda Bruin received the honor of being selected as the most improved player. The best servers of the year were Yvonne Schaner and Brenda Bruin. Yvonne was also voted as the best setter and Jane Oomen as the best spiker. All conference honors went to Yvonne Schaner. Coach Foster said, I enjoyed the satisfaction of working with the athletes, and I appreciate the good attitudes displayed by the team members ... The most memorable game for coach was, At Whitehall when we won 61 to 60 in overtime. We were behind 60 to 59 with only a few seconds left. Scott Feltner was fouled, and he made the winning free throws with only 3 seconds left. By the vote of the players, Kevin Keck received most valuable player, and Todd Nyquist and Shawn Brimmer received most improved players. District Finalists For the second year in a row, the Pirates Varsity Basketball team, led by 5 returning seniors, went to the finals in Districts. But the team started off the season on the wrong foot by losing their first three games. Then they rebounded, winning their next eight in a row, which gave them a lot of confidence. Coach Beckman again showed the team a winning season in going 12-8 over all, and 9-5 in the league, good for 4th place. Coach Beckman, who has coached the team for five years, remarked that his most valuable player was Bill Dodds, and his most improved players were: Dan Contreras and Norm Dodds. He also mentioned that his most memorable game was a triple overtime thriller with Muskegon Catholic, which Hart came out on top 74-73. He said, The kids played hard and deserved the good season. Special congratulations should be given to all-conference winners Brett Mikkelson and Bill Dodds. I Coach Beckman gives the team last minute briefing. They won 16 out of 17 dual matches. Along with first in Districts and Regionals. Plus a proud 4th in State. Eight of our guys went to State: Trenton Lynn, Dave Flowers, Mike Syer, Pete Peterson, Scott Gooch, Andy Willet, Tim Olson, and Don Taylor. They all dedicated themselves to the sport, which helped our school spirit show even more. Mr. Mark Bosse' has been coaching since 1971, and became head coach in 1975. He likes coaching because it allows him to know students in a different way. When asked what was the most memorable meet he said, The dual meet at Hamilton. We were rated a number 2 and they were 7. Some of our regulars were hurt, so it took some juggling to keep the streak going. Don Taylor won the meet when he didn't get pinned by their state placer from a year ago. Mr. Ted Borgeld was the assistant coach. He kept the wrestlers in top condition , commented Mike Syer, while he practiced with us, and helped with our techniques. 42 Mr. Bosse and Mr. Borgeld coaching to a victory. During the marching season, the flags and rifles added hoops to their regular routines. There was always something new on the field, a new song, new routine, etc. For the first time, the marching band did not go to marching competition. To wind up the band prepared a piece and routine for the Christmas parade. In addition to the fall marching season, the band performed at the Asparagus Parade in the spring. After the regular fall marching season ended, the band got right to work on their concert pieces which were presented at the annual spring concert and performed for the Concert Band Festival. Mr. Metzler grew up in Albion, Michigan where he attended Albion High School and Albion College. After he graduated from college in 1948, he moved to Hart and started teaching. He has directed many marching and concert bands through many competitions. Before 1969, the State Band Festival was held in Detroit and Ann Arbor, so the bandsmen decided against going many times, but when they did, they took many first and second ratings. They also went to all District Competition and took many first and second ratings. Since 1969, Mr. Metzler has directed his bands to all but two firsts in District Competitions, to the present. During this time, the bands took first in state about 11 times. Some noted dates are: '69, '71, '77, '75, '76 and '79. The bands have only gone to three marching competitions. In 1982, they took a first; 1983 a first and in 1984 a second. During his years of teaching, he has judged at many music festival competitions, and has been active in the Michigan School Band Orchestra Association. Mr. Metzler has always been exceptionally cooperative with the community by providing his time and services with the bands for the parades, Mayor-Exchange Day, Memorial Services, etc. For all of his talents and services Mr. Clarence Metzler should be commended. Junior Jim Reed took over as pep Band leader, and under his direction the group made some organizational changes. One such change, required Pep Band members to attend all practices in order to play at the games. The Pep Band was established by advisor Mr. Clarence Metzler. It was organized to add more excitement and enthusiasm at pep assemblies and games. To be a member of the Pep Band, students must be in either Jr. or Sr. band and be selected by Mr. Metzler. Once a member, the students are required to attend practices which took place at 8:15 in the morning. As mentioned earlier, Jim Reed was elected as the Pep Band leader. The leader is elected by the fellow Pep Band members. By Christy Linke Bdow: Renee Shrauger, Lisa Longendyke Laura Feldt sample the fon du. Le Jar din des Fetes This was our first year with the French Club and so we hope that we made it worthwhile for everyone, and that it will become a permanent club at H.H.S. for many years to come. Le Jardin des Fetes , which means, the garden of celebrations, was organized in October. The name of the club was chosen by ballot along with a couple of other choices. A few of the advanced French students went to our French teacher, Nancy Elenbaas, and discussed the idea of a club because there was no advanced class offered this year above second year French. We also hoped that the club would continue and expand the knowledge of French and to increase interest in the language. Our meetings took place every two or three weeks, at which we would review French vocabulary, watch filmstrips, eat French food, and sing French carols at Christmas. We attended a play at Calvin College in December, went to CMU on their annual Foreign Language Day, and planned a trip to visit a couple of museums. We had only two officers who were: President, Laura Feldt, and Secretary, Amy Ffuntington. They were elected by majority vote. Our group's advisor, Nancy Elenbaas had always wanted to start a French club. She thought that having the club would make up for not having a class. Miss Elenbaas said, I like seeing the students get excited about foreign language, and enjoy being involved on a different level with students. With a new year comes a change in membership, officers, outlook, and in the case of the Drama Club, a change in advisors. Like anyone currently attending Hart High the only Drama advisor I had ever known was Mrs. B. The challenge of becoming advisor was well met though by Mr. Doug Weaver. The Drama Club was lucky to find a person with Mr. Weaver's qualifications. However, Mr. Weaver had a few obstacles to overcome. The State Street Gym was condemned as a fire hazard, and alternative places to hold performances had to be found. In addition to this he had to learn the ropes of arranging such annual drama events as the Mock Rock Concert and plays. In the fall, the Drama Club collaborated with the Oceana players, the Performing Arts Council, and the Intermediate School District to present the Wizard of Oz . This was done to involve students and the community in a large production. Over 200 people tried out for parts. Drama club members landing parts were: Sarah Slocum, Shannon Rassmussen, Brad Youngstrom, December Sau-cedo, Jennifer Dold, and Melissa Vega. Mark Peters, Donovan Cater and Mike Stovall, Paula Weirich, Anna Martinez, Chriss Pease and Carmen Dobs-lawn were involved behind the scenes. By Kevin Frees H istory Is Fun The Michigan History Club added a new advisor, Mr. Marshall, to help Mr. Newkirk. When asked about the club Mr. Marshall commented, I think it is an excellent group, and Mr. Newkirk is doing a very good job. He added, The reason why I became an advisor is because I enjoy Michigan History. This organization was started in 1969 by Mr. Newkirk with his first Michigan History Class. It was established to give students an opportunity to visit places that they learned about in Michigan History. Two separate groups make up the Michigan History club. They are the Senior, which is also called, Coureur De Bois (runner of the woods or forest). This group consists of Juniors and Seniors. To be in the Senior Club, a student must have been in the Junior Club. The Junior Club consists of Freshmen and Sophomores Every fall for the past seven years the club sells cheese and sausage to raise money for their spring and summer trips. They plan all year for these trips. The Junior group goes for one day. Coureur De Bois goes on a trip for four days nights. To go on a trip, members must do a community service and sell a certain amount of cheese and sausage, to help pay expenses. The Club is also in charge of the school's flags and flag poles. When the poles need painting the members do it, and also put up the flags every morning. Mr. Newkirk has been an advisor for 17 years. When asked why, he said, Because I believe that students should have an opportunity to visit the places they learn about in Michigan History Class. The cooperation of the students added to the pleasure of skiing. This organization was first started in 1972 by Jack (Heggie) Heglund. The intent has been to just go and have a super time. One of the basic traditions has been the all-day ski trip at one of the surrounding resorts. Ski Club has no officers, and that's the beauty of it. Kids can join and not be “ruled by a select few. Instead, “Heggie's word is law, but they're the type of laws that are fun and easy to follow. Simply, NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL ALLOWED! Heggie is considered to be our head honcho, and makes sure everything runs according to plan. When asked what he liked best about working with the group he replied, They always enjoy skiing, and that's what it's all about. If you've never been skiing before and are afraid to try, don't be. All that you need is a great sense of humor and a change of dry clothes, and it's a guaranteed phenomenal time. By Brenda Waslusky Top: Brenda Waslusky tackling the slopes. It was created to provide services to the school and the community and to provide examples of character and leadership for others to follow. The members kept very busy throughout the year. Their services to the community began in October with the annual Trick or Treating for the Oceana Hospital and Medical Care Facility, raising a record-breaking $520.00. At Christmas time, the group spread a little cheer to residents of the Medical Care, by giving them homemade cards and by singing Christmas carols. In the spring, the annual blood drive and Teacher Day Continental Breakfast were held. The Spell Down had an added twist this year. For the first time ever it was a county-wide activity. It was organized at that time to promote the interests of the student body through it's representatives, and to encourage school spirit, loyalty, and citizenship. As always, student council coordinated the Homecoming festivities. Though the parade was cancelled due to rain, the pre-game and half-time activities proceeded without a hitch. For the second year the group sponsored a pop can box. They continued to provide the box in order to keep the school clean and promote school pride. As a charity project a slave auction was held to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. It was a huge success raising $169.00. Last but not least the student council had the restrooms painted when many students expressed concern about their appearance. Each person was expected to contribute a certain amount of material to each issue. The Hart Beat staff greatly improved the paper with the addition of pictures, not to mention a format change. Because of these changes it had been necessary to increase the price to 25$ per issue, but was reduced down to 10$ again shortly thereafter. On January 10th, the staff put on a dance to raise money for the Hart Beat and also to help cover the losses incurred due to the reduction of the price. The turnout was good, and so was the music. Mr. Jim Cunningham was the class advisor. When asked how he became the Journalism teacher, he stated, I was asked by the principal and I didn't say no. He likes working with the group. And because it was a different experience from anything he'd ever done before, he hopes that he can continue being the advisor in the future. Capturing Memories The yearbook tried to recapture all the memories and fun times throughout the 1985-86 school year. In addition to producing the Hartian, the staff sponsored the first dance of the year to raise money for a new 35mm camera. At the end of the year the annual Starving Photographers picture sale was held with proceeds being used to purchase film for 1987. In the spring of 1984, the yearbook started getting things together and picked new staff members who were: Alicia Meza, Mark Peters and Kim VanderWall. Returning staff members were: Amy Linke — Editor, Denise DeBard — Head Photographer Sports Editor, Larisa Fuehring — Business Manager and photo-graher, Jill Hempfling — photographer, and Karen Sibley. During the summer the Hartian staff sent two of their people to journalism camp at Michigan State. Amy Linke was sent to develop her skills and knowledge in editing. Kim VanderWall was sent to educate her further in photography. Also on September 25th, the staff attended a yearbook seminar at Calvin College. By Kim VanderWall 63 Building The Building Trades program was organized to actually provide students with the opportunity to build houses. The class added a $380 table saw which helped them work much faster. Also, they were not required to put the basement in. This was done before school started so that the class would get a head start at building the house. This program was begun in the 1972-73 school year. Mr. Russ Jones was the class' first teacher. Bob Nelson took over the program in 1976, and the existing teacher, Mr. James Quinn, started in the 1979-80 school year. The purpose of the class is to provide students with hands on experience in construction. The class sometimes visits different houses to learn how different schools build their homes. This was done at the end of the school year as a learning experience to see the different houses being built. Mr. Quinn has been in charge of the program for the past seven years. He is an easy person to get along with. If you have any questions just ask, and he will give you an answer. He said, The best thing about working with the group is to be able to look back when finished and see what the group has accomplished. By Lance Van Sickle A list of class members is as follows: Jim Aguirre, Brian Bonine, Mike Carlson, Dave Cloud, Eric Fleet, Marty Kaat, Dawn Marcellus, Jim Merten, Darren Musel, Rusty Shafer, Randy Sible, Otto Staple, Mike Syer, Jeff VanderZanden, Lance Van Sickle, Instructor — Mr. James Quinn. Shared Time: Challenging Fun I really enjoy taking auto mechanics because its fun and a real challenge , said Cindy Bectel, a Ludington Shared Time student. There were 23 Hart students who took classes at Ludington High School for the 1985-86 school year. This was the second year that students have traveled to Ludington to participate in their shared time program. This program gave each student experience in such subjects as: Auto Mechanics, Secretarial Skills, Health Occupations, and Metals. Kay Spivey, a Hart senior who was enrolled in Health Occupations said, The program gave me different opportunities to see what I want to do. I'd like to be a Veterinarian's Assistant or work in a nursing home as a nurse's aide. She further added, This program has helped me to see what I'm good at, and what I'm interested in. Powers Sept. 17, 1943-July 8, 1985 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 Mr. Powers was a man of compassion, of dignity and of pride. He encouraged all of his students to not only set their goals beyond the horizon, but also put forth all effort to achieve them. He cared for each and every one of his students and he was always willing to lend a helping band. At a school board meeting, Mr. Powers once stated, I believe in education. I believe in the students of Hart High School, and I believe in the old cliche that I have only failed when I have failed to try. Mr. and Mrs. Powers were active in many school activities. They became the parent figures for our wrestling family and they were always there to offer encouraging words. Even though Mr. Powers is no longer inspiring the students of Hart High, his memory lives on in the hearts of many and he will never be forgotten. F reshmen Take That First Step I like being a Freshman, it is much better than being an 8th grader. When I was in 8th grade I thought that being a Freshman would be em-barrasing, because many people told me that the upper-classmen put you down. Now that I'm a Freshman I realize that the people of Hart High just aren't like that. Most of the teachers are nice too. They seem to try to make it easy for the newcomers of Hart High. However, an overall analytical profile is necessary to provide a clear view of the situation. I, for one, find that having become a sophomore I can get just a taste of what being a senior is like. After talking to other people, I find that being a sophomore is not necessarily better than being a freshman. Some find that freshmen are enthusiastic, which I feel there is nothing wrong in being so. Then they recognize a tendency of sophomores to get bored or even egotistic. But once they become juniors, they start to gain interest again. Whether or not the life of a sophomore is better than that of a freshman, I can't exactly say. But it is, however, a step we all must take in our high school career. By Robert Yeager Top: Tonya Sloan and Diane Studer. Loft Class Officers: Pres. December Saucedo, Vice Pres. Cathy Ackley, Sec. Being a junior is fun because you can look down on the sophomores and freshman, and think, Man, I was at that level once, As a junior you are treated with respect by your teachers and aren't treated like a little kid anymore. Choices suddenly become decisions and chores are becoming responsibilities. With every victory there are two sacrifices, with every new-found freedom comes two self imposed restrictions. We find more and more roads to travel, but it gets easier to get lost. It's easier to be happy, but it's now impossible to be care free. Smiles still abundant but our eyes can see the shadows of the future. Only fools predict the future, but at the same time only fools don't prepare for it. We strive to become like those we respect, yet we struggle to gain our independence from them. We are now intelligent enough to see the changes in ourselves, but not yet wise enough to understand them. Still to young to worry about death, but to old not to worry about life. However, with all their determination and famous “catch-up” style basketball, they proved to be an exciting team to watch. Coach Jim Lamie described the game with Nelson Jr. High as his most memorable. “We were in awe to begin the game, but decided to play with them, and got back into the game when they were behind 20 points.” Aaron Nass was selected by coach Lamie as the most valuable player, with Chris Jensen being named as most improved. Valentines Day provided the perfect date for the annual Sweet Hearts Ball, which was held on Friday, February 14. This was the first year that the event was actually held on Valentines Day. Another first for this occasion was the crowning of the King and Queen during half time, prior to the dance. Queen Lisa Longingdyke and King Brian Smith were crowned by Tracy Greiner and John Curtis, last year’s royalty. Other candidates nominated included: Lisa Wilcox, Anita Christmann, Laura Foster, Pete Peterson. Andy Bush and Bill Dodds. Following the game with the Whitehall Vikings, the ball was held at State Street Gym, with music provided by “Tunes By Ryan . The cheerleaders, who sponsor this annual event, had decorated the gym in a Valentines theme. Math Team May 14. Hart students participated in the first county wide math competition. This event was organized by the Oceana Intermediate School District, with teams competing from all four high schools. It was held in the Shelby Optimist Club Building. Team members were selected by teachers in the Math Department. These selections were based on the results of previous math exams, those with consistently high scores were selected. Competitions were held in each of the following areas: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Trigonometry. Team trophies were awarded, as well as individual awards. Advanced math teacher Jack Heglund and algebra teacher Linda Peterson expressed a need to emphasize that this competition is intended to encourage interest in mathematics, and is not to be treated as a sport. Its results do not determine that any school is better than another, it simply provides an opportunity for students in the county to meet and share interests in this particular subject area. Forensics After long hours of rehearsal, the Forensic Team consisting of: Sarah Siocum. Larisa Fuehrinc. Brad Youngstrom, John Earle, Bob Yeager. Malissa Vega. Shannon Rasmussen. Leah White. Anna Martinez, December Saucedo and Amy Farmer, competed at Districts held in Holton High School. Placing first in their respective categories were: Sarah, December. Amy, Brad, Bob and Anna, with Shannon placing second. These members then proceeded on to Regional where only December made it into the Finals Baseball “The fact that we were able to get on the baseball field early this year because of good weather helped us defensively. This is especially important because of the large number of new players we had this year,” baseball coach Mr. Herb Foster said about the season. After 11 conference games and one scheduled double-header, Coach Foster said that he “liked the way they worked together and their desire to improve. Kneeling: Scott DeMarr. Softballers Show Talent Hart 24, Pentwater 9 in the first game of the 1986 season, with the girls already showing hard work and determination. Due to weather, postponements delayed the start, but coach Phil Kenyon praised the team on their first win saying, “What a great way to open the season.” He also stated that the team showed a strong desire to learn and each had a good work ethic. Mr. Kenyon, in his seventh year as head coach, enjoys playing the game himself, as well as teaching Jr. High and coaching golf in the fall. Guys’ Track The 1986 boys’ track team started out on the right foot thanks to the encouragement of new coach Dave DuMonte. According to some of the track members, Mr. DuMonte did a very good job coaching the team. Everyone agreed that he helped a lot and he knew what he was talking about. Susan Wiegand helped keep the team organized by recording times and doing paper work. With the help of Dave DuMonte and the excellent new sports complex, the Hart track teams will be able to show other schools in the future just how much talent we have. Girls’ Track The girls track team set out to create a tough team and that is exactly what they did. The lady pirates had some excellent athletes who were hard to beat. Dave DuMonte took over the head coaching job from Karen Drenth. With the help of former track member Mike Fuller, who was hired to help out with field events, the team had a good season. Junior-Senior Prom May 3, 1986 “Just You and I” A bridge between two dancing fountains, leading to a romantic gazebo, transformed our gymnasium into a summer garden and provided the perfect setting for the Prom's theme — Just You and I”. Everything sparkled, from the pink and silver streamers to the water in the fountains. It was so classy, commented senior Kari Walsworth about the decorations. Those attending danced to the music of “Sounds Good , with photos being taken by Russ Miller Studios. A perfect spring day added to the atmosphere to create a memorable evening.
