HOMECOMING WEEK Homecoming turned out to be a gbig success this 1979-80 school year. First we started out with spirit week. During the week students dressed up as pirates and as students from the 50’s. One day was stuffed animal day. We had a dress-up day and on the day of the game, a red and white day. The night of the big Homecoming football game went well. Hart Pirates beat the Manistee Catholic Sabers, 13 to 12. At half time it was announced that the winning float was “Agony of Defeet, constructed by the sophomores. Then the big moment came when they were to announce the 1979 Homecoming King and Queen. Last year’s Homecoming Queen, Lynn Greiner, crowned the new queen, Kathy Bowman, who in turn crowned the new Homecoming King, Max Gamble. After the game was the ’79 Homecoming dance. The dance featured “Voyagers . Let’s all hope that the spirit of Homecoming that we had this year, is carried on year after year at Hart High. Roger Wiegand Showing his muscles?!? Yearbook The yearbook staff worked hard to put out another spring book. Many hours were spent designing page layouts, writing copy and trying to find just the right pictures. The staff had to meet deadlines which at the time seemed impossible. The editor who deserves credit is Peggy Avery. Mrs. Ramseyer was the advisor. The best part of being on the yearbook staff is seeing the finished HARTIAN. We hope you like it too. 28 HART BEAT Provides Journalistic Experience Writing for the HART BEAT is not only fun, but gives students some insight into the real work of journalism. Writing stories is the basis for the school newspaper. However, it involves more. Some one has to gather information, type the stories, and lay out the paper. It also involves a great deal of personal contact with interviewing students, and expressing the faults and achievements of H.H.S. through the use of editorials. The paper is sold for only ten cents, but the expierience is immeasurable. Jeep and Bill sell the finished product. S?k?RMf,tenrnSTarfcK'7 Fr BRTJam?y Gastfield. Bill Walker. It s being referred to as a luxury sport, and with the high cost of renting equipment and buying left tickets, it is becoming more and more a sport of the rich. However, this isn’t true for Hart High School Ski Club. Going as a group member receives the benefits of reduced rates. The Ski Club also offers a common interest and giving them a good time. Assemblies Enliven School Year Juniors try to reach the top! Mimes entertain What do you mean we make a good couple? 36 Seniors cheer: “Bottoms Up! The thrill of victory! Assemblies Among the many activities at Hart High, assemblies are one of the most enjoyed. The Student Council finds about four assemblies per year, and it’s money well spent. The cheerleaders also play a major part in the creation of pep assemblies. They practice cheers and mounts that get the students in a good mood and generally healthy state of rowdiness. Assemblies offer school unity and they give us a small break from the usual day-to-day routine. Perhaps one of the most important factors of an assembly, is that some are created by students for students. This is one reason why assemblies will always remain a special part of high school. While everyone is still swimming, the girls are pounding the court. They put in many hours before the season starts. This year's Girls’ Basketball team ended with a 6-13 record. They got off to a slow start, but seemed to pick up steam as the season progressed. They lost some tough games and one such game was with our rival, Shelby. When Hart had the ball, they controlled it with skill. But the team bowed out of the district tournament after the first game, when they again lost to Shelby. 41 J.V. Girls Have More Wins Than Losses J.V. Season The J.V. Girls have nothing to complain about this season. They opened the season with two wins but followed with two losses. GOLF SEASON No one can say that the golf team didn't try this year. With only one senior on the team and the rest freshmen and sophomores, it was the year of the rookie. It was a year for trying to improve scores. Greg Herremans was the team member with the lowest average. Al Contreras was the most improved player. With a little experience to back them up, next year’s team should put some matches in the win column. 43 SCOREBOARD Hart Opp. Whitehall 38 21 Newago ...18 45 Ludington 32 23 Oakridge ...38 23 Whitehall . .41 20 1 Shelby ...22 r L 37 Ravenna .. .18 41 White Cloud .37 23 Newago ...18 45 Mason County .. .38 19 Montague .. .15 % 46 White Cloud Inv. 8th iff Ferris State Inv. 9th Shelby Inv. 3rd Regionals 6th Top: Kathy Bowman and Mark Dean get set. Although we had only two victories the players must still be congratulated, for they played some hard and trying football. Our Homecoming was one of the victories. The players had to play in the rain and cold to defeat the Sabers from Manistee Catholic, but it was worth it. Congratulations also so to Ralph Martinez for being selected All-conference defensive tackle on the '79 West Michigan Conference football team. Ray Trevino and Tom Kronlein were selected for Honorable Mention of the defensive team. The coaches also deserve a big part of the congratulations. They too put in alot of time. SEASON A tough and aggressive football team, that is what you would say about the Hart J.V. Football team. They proved this by defeating White Cloud on their opening night and also by winning their second battle of the season against Montague. Their toughest conflict came when they faced the Norsemen J.V. Football team from North Muskegon. This said by many was their most agressive and well played game. They proved to be tough and in excellent shape. Next year the Varsity will have 14 of this year's J.V. players and they will prove to be good assets. The Little Pirates played a good year of football finishing with a good 5-4 record overall. J.V. Some of the games that were lost ended with close scores. The most rewarding game of the season was when the Hart Pirates beat the Shelby Tigers on their court by the score of 66-46. There were only five juniors on the team this year and the rest were seniors. We are sure that the seniors especially would have liked it to be an undefeated season. But the spectators enjoyed the games. They rooted when the team had a victory and supported the team after a loss. Varsity Plays Exciting Basketball Varsity Basketball — Front Row: Brian Waslusky. J.V. BASKETBALL SEASON Even though the Junior Varsity Basketball team had a rough season with a record of 4 and 14, there are still some bright things to consider. The team beat the Shelby Tigers twice, which is the most times a team has beaten them. This is probably the most important accomplishment of the season. This team had quite a few players that are capable of playing very good basketball for the varsity squad next year. Through maturity and hard practice, they could develop their skills which is necessary for varsity basketball. CHEERLEADERS: Advisor, Ms. Elenbaas; Lisa Evers, Stephanie Price, Christine Smith, Mary Aerts, Carla Morely, Tammy Siebert. Cheerleaders Show Athletic Ability Where would our teams be if it weren’t for the cheerleaders? Our cheerleaders, J.V. and Varsity, work hard to support our teams. Whether it be the hours they spend making posters, planning assemblies, and practicing their cheers, or the personal support they give the players, the cheerleaders play an important role in paving the road to victory. This year the cheerleaders did an especially fine job of giving our players and our school the confidence so badly needed in competitive sports, so three cheers for the cheerleaders! Below: J.V. and Varsity cheerleaders show spirit for their team and their country. -X A TimE FOR CAM nV SHOP Tie Dtpnmnas SENIORS 'imes Of Our Lives Do You Remember? Every year that goes by, a senior class graduates and a new one takes its place. There are dreams of the future, plans for college and thoughts of careers, but most of all there are memories of times when friends were always present and life was still pretty carefree. And there were also days when every thing seemed to go wrong and it was only 9:05 in the morning. And there was the seemingly never ending term paper struggle. But even when times were rough, there was always that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the valuable gold called graduation. It's not just a thought of “getting” out; it’s more like “I did it”, and I did it well.” This is what it means to be a senior.
