Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1969 volume:

THE 7 969 HARTIAN HART HIGH SCHOOL HART MICHIGAN Peter Pan sang, “In Neverland people never grow up”. To Peter, this enchanted land was an eternal place between childhood and adulthood where “dreams are bom and time is never planned.” During our past four years at Hart High, we have often been reminded of Peter Pan’s Neverland. Our high school days have shaped and formed new dreams, sorting and sifting them so only the best are treasured and retained and only the best remain to grow. When we first became a part of Hart High School’s Neverland life, we began to understand how much there is to growing up and living our dreams. With new friends we felt the enchantment of blissful laughter and the sensations of our first shaky foothold on the uncharted island of adulthood. Thus, because of what Hart High has given us, we have come to know how Wendy and the lost boys felt when they left the spellbound Neverland of childhood. Now, we too, feel that every lost boy or girl who searches his young world of dreams and reality for his Neverland, can find this place only within his heart. It might be miles beyond the moon Or right here where we stand; But if we keep an open mind, Then suddenly we will find ... Never, Neverland. We’ll have a treasure if we stay there More precious far than gold; For once we have found our wa; We can never, never grow Never, Neverland. And that’s our ho And time is never Just think o: And our hi Never, Nevi where dreams are born Forever, in ... At 9:00 each morning, another day begins at Hart High School. Its corridors echo with chatter about Homecoming, the Junior-Senior banquet, the biology test, or Saturday’s date. To a few, it is “just a school”; but to the majority of students, it is the place where they have learned together, dreamed together, and had fun together. A year at Hart High is a composite of activities. It is this spirit of activity which our yearbook has attempted to capture. 4 Hart High School’s spirit does not end at the finish of six hours of study. Enthusiasm runs high among students during the exciting competitive sports seasons. The crowd supports, the team excells, and people enjoy themselves. Going out for football, basketball, band, cheerleading, plays, the students of Hart High have a deeper spirit than simply rambunctious yelling ... the spirit of competition!!! IN MEMORIAM These 3 people, Curt, Sharon, and Richard Peterson, were an important part of our lives until they were tragically killed February 2, 1969. Sharon, a Hart Alumna, willingly chaparoned our class activities, enhancing our projects with original suggestions. And many times after school let out we would smile at Rich sitting on his mother’s lap or peering over his father’s shoulder. Mr. Peterson was not only our teacher and coach but also our friend. He taught us cooperation, responsibility, and sportsmanship. As our Sophomore advisor, Mr. Peterson always had time to give advice or lend a helping hand. In remembrance and appreciation, we, the Seniors of 1969, wish to dedicate our Hartian to the Curtis Peterson family. 7 SENIORS SENIOR HONOR STUDENTS 1st row -- Cheryl Christmann, Linda VanAelst, Lynne Jackson, Kathy Schaner, Joy Howard, Nancy Fishel. 2nd row “ Tom Osborn, Jeane Weaver, Pat Youngstrom, Kittie Peterson, Brent Clark, Sue Davis, Paula Mitteer, Randy Olm-stead. Gradually they gained power and placed their destinies for the Freshman year in: President...................................................Brent Clark Vice President..............................................Paula Mitteer Secretary...................................................Janet Mahan Treasurer...................................................Dan Greiner Student Council.............................................Tom Keck, Mark Trommater “Key to Victory,” the Frosh’s entry in Homecoming float competition, received a disastrous fourth place; but Pat Youngstrom, our court representative, managed a smile Part II Nancy Foster and Dave Tate graced the Sweethearts’ Ball court for the first festivities of 1966. Later that year the “Deep Sea Swirl” marked the passing of the twirp dance. Spring saw the exciting transformation to .. . Chapter II Part I Sophomores met the ’66-’67 school year head-on by electing the following officers: President.......................................................Cliff Reed Vice President.................................................Craig Hardy Secretary.......................................................Anne Oomen Treasurer......................................................Terry Feldt Student Council.................................................Mark Trommater, Gary Dean Sherry Yonker was the Sophomore Homecoming Court representative while “Victory Ship” sailed off with fourth place again. That failure didn’t keep the Sophomores down long, for they soon plunged into Christmas card sales. Part II February found Linda Hutchinson and Frank Wieber as Sophomore candidates for the Sweethearts’ Ball. After a crowded “Cowboy Corral” with the “Dudes,” the anxiety and tensions mounted in preparation for “Shangri-La,” the Junior-Senior Banquet. The year busily passed and suddenly we were into . .. 28 Chapter III Part I Juniors announced their leadership for the exciting ’67-’68 year as: President...................................................... Randy Olmstead Vice President.................................................Duane Swihart Secretary......................................................Kittie Peterson Treasurer......................................................Fred Peterson Student Council................................................ Tom Osborn, Bill Brubaker At Homecoming, the Junior float, “Pirates Are Tops,” rode triumphantly into first place. Kittie Peterson was our court representative. Part II Junior valentines Anne Oomen and Craig Hardy represented our class at the Sweethearts’ Ball. The Junior-Senior Prom transported dancers to “Jade East,” which proud Juniors decorated with fountains and a magnificent Buddha. And, at long last. .. Chapter IV Part I We’re Seniors! We place the reins of leadership for our last year in the hands of: President....... Vice President. . Secretary....... Treasurer ...... Student Council Our Senior Homecoming crowns Nancy Foster queen, with Linda Hutchinson, Ricki McDonald, and Paula Mitteer in her court. Our last float triumph, “Pirates Can Eagles,” takes second place, but we think it’s best! An old-fashioned Christmas tree dominates “Frosty Fling,” the Senior Christmas dance. Part II Rapidly now, the days pass away. Jeane Weaver and Fred Peterson have been chosen Senior representatives for the Sweethearts’ Ball. Queen Jeane steals the hearts of all as she reigns over the Ball. Our last Junior-Senior Banquet, “Desert Splendor,” disappears over the dunes of time. The prom, other banquets, and the Senior picnic crowd away the last few weeks until... Chapter V June 6,1969 arrives, the day we have wanted most and least -- Graduation! With mixed feelings, we say good-bye to H.H.S., leaving behind our sincere wish that the future classes will gain as much from their experiences here as we, the class of 1969. 29 Gary Dean Tom Osborn Pat Youngstrom Susan Davis Nancy Foster, Cliff Reed SENIOR DIRECTORY TOM ALVESTEFFER - Pep Club 2; Ski Club 3; Physical Fitness Club 1; Rifle Club 1; Bowling Club 2; Chess Club 2,3; J. RILEY 100 ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING This is Homecoming: a class bets its pride on a mass of chicken wire, crepe paper, and wood held together with glue, nails, and sheer willpower. This year the victor is the Sophomore class with the theme “Pirates Stomp Eagles.” But the other floats deserve mention too. The Senior’s, “Pirates Can Eagles,” (top right); the Junior’s, “Beat Eagles,” (middle); and the Freshmen’s “Scrambled Eagles,” (bottom right). 102 Homecoming is also proudly marching onto the field as a member of the HHS Band, or perhaps strutting in front of the band as a mini-skirted majorette. To the cheerleaders, homecoming means gathering school spirit at the annual bonfire, and leading the crowd on in their victorious cheers. Finally, homecoming means smiles of triumph enthusiastically pictured on the faces of the crowd, the cheerleaders, and the team. 103 HOMECOMING QUEEN QUEEN NANCY There are many facets to a queen: she is a cheerleader, fellow classmate, and finally ambassadress for our school. A magic surrounds her, and a dignity, the dignity of a queen. 104 PAULA MITTEER HOMECOMING COURT 105 Juniors: Karen Carlson, Rex Dean. Sophomores: Leslie Russel, Ken Saunders. Freshmen: Margaret Bauer, John Foster. 106 SWEETHEARTS' BALL Capturing the hearts of all who attended, Jeane Weaver and Steve Schey were crowned king and queen of the Sweethearts’ Ball. In an atmosphere of hearts and flowers, starry-eyed couples danced and dreamed. 107 801 „ 3NIM 3H1 HUM 3NOO„ MOMENTS TO REMEMBER The music fades, the stars grow dim, The night too soon departs, And though it dies, it leaves a memory glowing in our hearts. A glow that is the symbol of the happy days we’ve known -- Of countless friends and dreams come true, Of four years that have flown, Of four short years that hurried by and to them now we cling, As rather wistfully we reach our prom. Gone With The Wind, the final fling. When other nights and other days may find us gone our separate ways, We will have these moments to remember. 109 1967 -- the Mural .
