Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1968 volume:

Martian 1968 Mart Migh School Mart, Michigan foreword Nearly four hundred years ago a Spanish writer created two figures who have become known throughout the Western world and whose characters have become symbols for two aspects of human nature. The hero, Don Quixote de la Mancha, represents man’s search for an ideal while his companion in his journeys, Sancho Panza, represents the practical outlook on life. In our own journey through school and on through life, none of us is completely like either character; sometimes one aspect is uppermost and sometimes the other. However, it is during our school years perhaps that we think more in terms of the ideal and dream of a better world, and resolve to put our energies to work to achieve it. For this reason we have chosen as our theme for the 1968 Hartian the figure of Don Quixote. We hope that by putting to use the knowledge, attitudes and skills which we have gained so far in our education, we can make into reality some of the impossible dreams of the past. Working, playing and studying together for four years, has transformed some hundred individuals into a group with a distinctive character. A yearbook is a book of memories, but more than that it is a book that reflects the personality of the students who have lived the experiences recorded in .its pages, The staff of the 1968 Hartian has given much time and thought to compiling a book which will tell the story of this school year, record the important events relating to the graduating class, and also reflect its spirit. 2 Contents foreword 2 Dedication 4 School Board 5 Administration-faculty 7 Underclassmen 15 Seniors 33 Class History 54 Mock elections 56 Organizations 59 Sports 77 Activities 91 Senior Directory 104 Advertising 109 'Dedication It seems as though it were only a few short years ago when I used to look forward to a bedtime story and a chance to lick the cake bowl. But the years flew by and new things filled my desires . . . clothes, the use of the family car, dates, and MONEY. Yes, and you, Mom and Dad, were the ones who always shared these things with me. You laughed when 1 laughed, cried when I cried. You knew and understood that all these things were just a part of my growing stage. And so, Mom and Dad, I offer this dedication to you to express my appreciation for all the memories of your trust, confidence, wisdom, understanding, friendship; and for the love you have given me through these years. Board of Education Dr. Kenneth Butcher, Mr. William Jensen, Mr. Roger Christman, Mr. Thomas Foster, Dr. Linford Davis, Mr. Richard Hodges, Mr. Frank Wieber In attempting to secure much needed monies for the operation of the school, the Board has not always met with popular approval; however, we are grateful for their continued concern. So the class of 1968 would like to express its appreciation to the Board of Education for their untiring efforts on our behalf. 5 Matching the Martian 6 Ministration faculty Through our four years of high school, perhaps the persons who deserve a great deal more credit than they ever receive are our administrators and teachers. EUGENE A. RANDALL Superintendent The Class of 1968 was in first grade when Mr. Randall became Superintendent at Hart. During the time he has been here the most important outward changes have been the new buildings and the consolidation of nearby districts. To Mr. Randall, these changes have been important only as a means to achieve his goal of more and better education for all students in the district, and he has used every effort to provide the best teachers and adequate equipment to realize this goal. ROBERT SLEZAK Principal One of the first tasks which Mr. Slezak faced when he came to Hart last summer was the rescheduling of nearly all the students because of the reduced curriculum. He met that challenge and the many others which have faced him this year in a conscientious and hard-working manner. The students have learned to know him as a firm and fair person. IVAN F. ROBINSON Guidance Counselor Over the years Mr. Robinson has filled many roles in the Hart Schools, and for the past eight years has been the Guidance Counselor. Whether the problem is large or small, academic or personal, the students know they can count on Mr. Robinson to give all the time necessary to solve it. 8 MRS. RUTH VANNETTE Jr. High Mathematics MR. They elect the following class officers: President----------------------Barb Peters Secretary..............- - Marjorie Jensen Vice President................Mark Stovall Treasurer..................Larry Schaner Student Council Representatives—Cindy Corbin; Steve Beckholt They then proceed to gather materials for their first class project: A 1964 Homecoming Float which, true to the freshman tradition comes in last place. The theme of the catastrophe is All Set for Victory.' Pam Amstutz represents the class on the Queen's Court. Act I, Scene 2 At the Sweetheart's Ball, Shirley Pangburn and Mark Stovall are candidates for Queen and King. In April the class puts on its first dance entitled Werewolf Whirl, and in May at the Junior-Senior Prom, Isle of Paradise, Freshman servers parade the gym as South Sea Natives. They endeavor to raise money by selling fourth-rate candy at first-rate prices—and make a lot of money. i iw 1 . 1 r - Act II, Scene 2 February brings the Sweetheart's Ball. Candidates this year are Nancy Dean and Dave VandenHeuval. In the tradition of the Class of '68, they break tradition by importing a noted pop band, The Chaparrals, for their Sophomore dance Tin Can Alley. Also that spring, several Sophomores serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet, Evening in Venice. (Exit Silly Sophomores.) Act III, Scene 1 Time: September 1966 (Enter Anxious Juniors with a busy year ahead.) Their Float at Homecoming wins second place but first place in the hearts of all spectators. It is titled B Heading for Victory! Carol Nelson is their Court Representative. Act III, Scene 2 The Juniors are disappointed when they are informed that they will not sponsor the Junior-Senior Banquet. Their disappointment is lessened as they decorate the reception room in accordance with an oriental motif Shangri-la. After that they plunge head first into feverish preparation for the most stupendous prom in the history of H. H. S. Brigadoon. (Exit very proud Juniors.) Act IV, Scene 1 Time: The following September Enter Seniors, nonchalant, and self-assured. They elect Class officers: President----------------------Carol Nelson Secretary----------------- Marjorie Jensen Vice President-------------------Pete Daly Treasurer--------------------Brel Scofield Student Council Representatives--Shelly Tate, Cindy Corbin Homecoming Day rolls around. Only the speedy work of a capable fire brigade saves their float from total destruction. They rejuvenate the float, We've got Spirit, during noon hour, free periods, and excused class time. Finally the moment of decision arrives. The Homecoming Court, including Pam Amstutz, Terri Cozart, Carol Nelson, and Shirley Pangburn, parade the football field preceded by the class floats. It is announced that their SNOOPY once again carries them to victory. Pam Amstutz is then announced Queen of Homecoming 1967. Soon afterward, work is begun on the immortal classic the HARTLAN. They highlight the Christmas Season by the Christmas Ball Snowflakes and Mistletoe. Act IV, Scene 2 They can almost taste graduation as they order announcements, select class colors, and motto, and are measured for caps and gowns. In the most exciting game of the year, the basketball teams attain victory over arch-rivals--Shelby. (Two Weeks Later) Mikyo Trevino and Mary McLeod reign over the Sweetheart's Ball as King and Queen. In the final months of the year the class participates in the flurry of Senior activities, including the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, lawn party, marching practice, awards assembly, and finally GRADUATION on June 7.
