She has always been willing to volunteer her services whenever she realized we had problems to overcome. To you. Miss Eckerle, we gratefully say, Thank you. 3 1963 REVIEW HART HIGH SENIORS FOREWORD The HARTIAN Staff decided on the theme 1963 Review for its annual. Attempts have been made to feature the highlights of the school happenings. The activities of each group are important to those specific ones involved. However, due to space the staff endeavored to select those events involving many students. The staff is composed of seniors who volunteer to spend thought and time in planning and doing the many necessary details involved in creating a book. This year's HARTIAN contains many old ideas and some new ones in its make-up. The personnel of the staff feel cer- Sdiforial tain that the 1963 HARTIAN will prove a future source to refresh many memories of high school days. WHAT HIGH SCHOOL MEANS TO ME Pausing a moment as I graduate from Hart High and leave for unknown fields lying ahead, I recall our class motto, The future could be made much brighter if everyone would strike a match to die candle of knowledge. Four years—what have I done with them, or they with me? Have I lighted candles to brighten my pathway and that of others? Rushing in on me are memories of hours spent in the classrooms in the attempt to acquire knowledge useful for the future; of favorite and disliked subjects; of teachers spending much effort, both in and out of school, to aid me in my search for knowledge; of words of encouragement, counsel and suggestions, examples in conduct, etc. which have been absorbed, never to be forgotten; of friendships with both boys and girls, (some I hope to keep always); of football and basketball victories with their wild enthusiasm; of the band and concerts; of plays and the fun rehearsing; of die Homecomings; of banquets and proms and all the decorating. These memories and others come tumbling vividly into my mind's eye, bringing a mixture of joy and sadness, as my high school days draw to a close. The future bids me to come and so Good-by, High School Days, but many memories will go with me as aids and encouragements along my journey of life. Back: P. Peters, J. Schiffeneder, K. Marshall, F. The Board then chose Tom Foster as President. The Board is striving to maintain a high standard of education for all pupils in the district and to those who come into Hart. SHOP STUDIES ADDED The addition of an industrial arts department was a must when the new building was constructed. For the first time this year shop classes are being offered on a full time basis. The program is quite adequate for a beginning. A general shop type program in blueprint reading, general woodwork, metal work and electricity is offered. Advanced work in these and other areas will be added as needed. The five sections of beginning students are attaining the objectives as evidenced by the many interesting projects being undertaken by the pupils. The Central Michigan Educational Television Council has announced that the Hart Public Schools are among those using programs prepared at its direction and broadcast over local stations as part of their regular classroom instructional program. These lessons are video-taped by teachers in studios at C.M.U. and broadcast by Station WMTU channel 9 from Cadillac each weekday morning in the time period from 9:00 to 10:00. Classes being used involve most of school population and include: science for grades 5 and 6 and, also, for grades 7 and 8: a conservation program for use in either Junior or Senior High, arts and crafts for the elementary grades and American government and economics for the 12th grade. Most unusual is the 12th grade government program where the seniors meet for two hours on Tuesday and Wednesday and one hour on Friday to watch the television lectures and participate in class discussions. CURRICULUM STUDY Mr. Spratt Illness forced Mr. Spalding of Britton, our agricultural teacher, to resign at Christmas. The Board was successful in filling the vacancy with Mr. Tom Spratt. His home is in Bangor and he had just graduated from Michigan State University. Miss Sue Bellon in the English department married in February and resigned. A special study is being made of new methods of teaching Modern Math, Science and English and possible changes in the course of study for next year. Miss Ellen O'Donnell, a graduate of Michigan State, from Morency was hired to fill this vacancy. To you, our Board of Education, we. Graduates of 1963, express our appreciation for your labors and time spent in our behalf. The new building has been a constant joy and pride to us, the first class to spend a whole year in it. Its architecture, furnishings, cleanliness, and atmosphere have been conducive to study. We hope to pass it on to the classes following in as good condition as we found it. No one, let alone yourselves, keeps a record of the hours taken from your other interests and devoted the business of the general supervision of educational problems and to the decisions of many questions involving various factors and personalities. As members of the agricultural, business, industrial and professional fields of endeavors, you have brought much knowledge, experience and many viewpoints into the educational realm -all valuable to us as students. Osborn 1963 REVIEW HART HIGH SENIORS Underclassmen FRESHMEN The Freshman Class of 1962-63 started with an enrollment of 115. It took a little time for us to get acquainted with each other, with our teachers and the new schedule of classes. Mrs. Flynn, Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Abe, Mr. Weaver and Mr. Spratt endeavored to assist us in our adjustments. The following are the class officers: Pres. Bob Hogarth Vice. Doug Dillingham Sec. Helen Spitler Treas. Oscar Cacazos Charles Johnston and Barry Osborn are our representatives on the Student Council. Our first real project was the making of a float for the Homecoming festivities. This was fun, even if we did not win the prize. Helen Spitler was one of the queen’s attendants. Participation in the Sweetheart Ball for the first time was exciting. Our class members of the court were Cathy Fenton and Bill Turner. SOPHOMORES The Sophomores chose as officers: Pres. Ray Pearson Vice. Dan Rickard Sec. Katherine Gowell Treas. Connie Dillingham Our Council members are Ruth Fenton and Bob Marshall. Perhaps the most breath taking times were our biology experiments where the perfume-like smell of formaldehyde penetrated our nostrils each day. Where are the forceps? became the familar cry of many when we bravely attempted to disect the harmless, little frogs set before us. Our struggles were rewarded with a biology field day. We had a good time, but found only a few specimens. Each week we had candy sales when we tried to sell our homemade candy (not always the best quality) for a nickel. The Homecoming float gave us an opportunity to use our skills and imagination. Beverly Huntoon was a member of the court. The following are members of the National Honor Society: K. Gowell, R. Herr, E. Jackson, B. Marsh, L. Tate, and D. Wysaski. JUNIORS At the beginning of our Junior year our officers were: Pres. Fred Corbin Vice. David Perry Sec. Janet Tate Treas. David Spitler Gary Schaner and Mary Vasquez served on the Council. Our Homecoming float won second prize and Shirley Schultz was our court attendant. Realizing that this year was our year for the Banquet and the Prom, we conducted a successful Christmas card sale to raise the necessary finance for these events. The day of our class rings’ arrival was a highlight. How proud we are of them. At the time this goes to press our plans are being formulated and committees are busy working towards the two dates, April 20 and May 18. The following are members of the National Honor Society: B. For the past two years The Junior High Reading classes have been using the Science Research Associates (SRA) Laboratory as their basal text. Read Magazine, Teen-Age books and state library books have been used for supplementary material. The most popular choice at this age is mystery, adventure and horse stories. Material named Power Builders 2, Rate Builders and Listening Skill Builders is used to aid pupils in developing their reading abilities. Most of the pupils enjoy this program, as each one is progressing at his level and can see progress made. The tachistoscope is being used as an educational device to improve the eye spansion and attention range of each student. It flashes words or phrases and thus keeps the pupils alert or he misses it. VALENTINE PARTY The highlight of this year’s Junior High classes was the Valentine party held in the Spitler Gym. About a hundred pupils, guests, parents and teachers attended the event. The several selected committees functioned very well, providing appropriate decorations, entertainment and refreshments for the occasion. Mary McLeod and Doug Keck won the door prizes. JR HIGH BASKETBALL Several nearby schools joined with Hart in a Jr-Hi basketball schedule for the first time. Games were played at 4:00 or 6:00 p.m. so that the boys were home early. Besides learning the skills of the game they developed socially, mentally and physically from playing. All the remaining pupils of the Jr-Hi formed a very enthusiastic cheering section. They learned some of good sportsmanship conduct attitudes. Their own cheerleaders and pep band added much color to these games. SCIENCE FOR YOU The television program has partially replaced the regular text book in the Jr-Hi science classes. Although this form of instruction is still in the experimental stages, the students are growing increasingly fond of their TV days. The lesson usually starts with a teaser which is a thought question designed to catch the interest of the student and start him thinking about the subject to be covered in the ensuing twenty-nine minutes. After the TV lecture it is time for the students and teacher to work together to learn as much as they can about some of the unanswered questions and their own curiosity. 8tfi Qra.de Mary Aguire Linda Amstutz Duane Bickel Lora Bos Steven Branyan Jim Carlson Susan Carlson Sally Dennison Steve Dillingham Susan Dillingham Aneita Ellis Gary Fine Sharon Fine Alice Fishel Jeff Gamble Jerre Gamble Bruce Hardy Paulette Highland Shirley Hill Regina Hopkins Nancy Huntoon Tony Juska Doug Keck Rodney Larson Larry Lindsay Monica Lyons Mike Mack Janice Marvin Arlon McCluskey Joe McGhan Janet Miller Kenneth Moschke Ronald May David Orent Dennis Cfrent Karen Peeraer Vicki Perry Carol Peterson Suzanne Reeds Ruben Salazar Pam Schiller John Seelhoff Noel Sobers Janice Stover Tom Tubbs Susan VanAllsburg Jim Vrbanac Robert Vega Bruce Waslusky Candace Weaver Charles Wells Judy Wieber Bette Woodley Kathleen Zahrt Pamela Amstutz Paula Anthonison Richard Babbitt Steve Beckholt Deborah Botton John Botton Tommy Campbell Cindy Corbin Terri Cozart Richard Davila Daniel DeMint Jim Ellis Jerome Estep Mark Ferris Albert Flory Andy Fishel Donald Fishel Debbie Fletcher Mary Jane Frees Dennis Gale Dorothy Gowell Mary Gowell Gary Graff Lottie Hale Velma Haney William Hess Richard Huff Arthur Jeffries Douglas Johnson Art Kelley Kenneth Klotz Jennifer Lipski Randy Lydens Linda Mast Mary McLeod Erika Mittag Pam Perry Mark Piegols Poger Postema Charles Reed Linda Reeds Patsy Robles Virginia Salazar Dianna Snyder Cheryl Stahl David Stever Mikyo Trevino David VandenHeuvel Phyllis Villaveal Gregory Viterna Ruth Vrbanac Ivan Wilde Mrs. Gillett Mrs. Vannette Student Council Back: Gary Schaner, Jorgen Nilsson, Till Cramer, Barry Osborn. Two new projects were undertaken this year: the first being the organization of an area Student Council in which Council members of the area meet to discuss school problems and activities; the second being a school column in the Hart Journal featuring school news and activities. Some of the other things undertaken by the Council were the clothing drive, dime dances, decorating the cafeteria for Christmas, Homecoming festivities, all school pictures and the selection of paid assemblies. Tire Council's main goal is to get the students to voice their opinions through their representatives. NOON HOUR This year the noon hour has been split. The seventh, eighth and ninth graders eat in one shift and the tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders in another. While one group is eating, the other has a period for club meetings, dancing or study. All organizations meet during the noon hour, except the Student Council which meets on school time. SWEETHEART BALL The FHA under the leadership of Miss Eckerle sponsored the annual Sweetheart Ball which proved to be one of the highlights of the year. The Valentine theme formed the basis of decorations. Each of the four classes choose a king and a queen candidate from whom the entire high school choose the royalty” for the evening. The other six candidates serve as the queen's court. This year Carla Scofield and Roland Flory, both Juniors, were the favorites with Cathy Fenton, Bill Turner, Connie Dillingham, Dennis Owens, Judy Borucki and Paul Tate as attendants. ASSEMBLIES So far this year we have had three assemblies paid for by the school. Chuck Naidl talked about reptiles and showed us some of the specimens from his reptile farm. During the second one C. Cwiertnia played a horn and sang. W. Kronemeyer who was a missionary in Africa talked on Africa and showed interesting things from that continent for our third program. In addition to these we have had some very good free assemblies. Two men from General Motors demonstrated and talked about new inventions. For Thanksgiving different students told what Thanksgiving meant to them. The choir and band presented a musical program for Christmas. The National Honor Society sponsored the second allschool spell-down in which Emily Bat-tice was again Grand Champion. FFA WINS CONTESTS The FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team composed of J. Brandel, R. Dean, A. Marsh, M. Beggs, R. Kokx, K. Lipps, R. Krantz, G. Pettigrove and T. Foster won the first place award in the district and regional contests and so will compete at the state level. Mr. Spratt is the faculty advisor. BAND IS WINNER The Hart bands have another successful year under the direction of Clarence Metzler. The Senior Band has a membership of eighty-five and the Junior Band of fifty-seven. The Senior Band won an all No. 1 rating in the district band festival which qualifies it to participate in the state contest. There were twenty-four first place and forty-five second place winners among the Senior Band members in the annual solo contests, while the Junior Band won twenty-one firsts and twenty-eight seconds. The Hart team showed much ability and fine performance with three Seniors. Jerry Brandel. Dave Miller and Jim Stover, and two Juniors, Don Taylor and Richard Tompkins, earning places on the All-Conference team. Jim Stover, Hart Pirate end, was selected as a member of the Woodland TV All Star team. PIRATES CLINCH LEAGUE TITLE The Hart Pirates clinched the West Michigan Conference title when they took a 77-65 win from Reed City Coyotes in the local gym. Jim Stover had his finest game of the year, as he rolled up 12 field goals and eight of ten free throws for a 32 point total. Bud Tice, also, turned in one of his best games scoring 20 points. Coach Weaver used his entire squad during the game, thus giving all senior players an opportunity to see some action. Hart met Fremont for the opening game of the tournament. Using its height to good advantage Hart turned its full power against its opponent and shoved the team past the danger point. Stover poured in 20 of his 24 points in the final half to make it a rout. Dayharsh parted the nets for 20 points and Bengston had 16 to help Hart to its 13th win in 17 starts. The game ended 76-43 and Hart was ready to play again in the finals Friday. Amidst tremendous excitement on every hand Hart and Whitehall met in the final playoff. This time Whitehall defeated Hart by a score 44-56. FOUR PIRATES ON ALL-STAR SQUAD Three Hart players were named in the West Michigan All-Star first quintet at the meeting of coaches and players of the Conference, and a fourth was placed on the second team. Jim Stover, Brad Dayharsh and Steve Bengtson, all Hart high seniors, made the first team, and another senior, Bud Tice, was named on the second team.
