SENIOR CLASS ’61 HART HIGH SCHOOL HART, MICHIGAN HARTIAN PUBLISHED BY Foreword Life is frequently comjxired to a jdpflfey. Some roads are smooth and easily traveled: othek are roupi and difficult. Into most journeys usually comes a variety. The weary monotony of a rugged stretch is lightened by vistas of a level road ahead. But though the journey be easy or difficult, one does not make the trip by a single leap, but rather by a succession of numerous single steps, taken one at a time. From ead «fSp' lls wner should receive a little more self-reliance and assurance to m|;t the future. We, as Seniors of 1961, have'come thus fan )n our various journeys of life. Suggestions fromjwtW guides, though often not heeded, have een well-intended ahA valuably.y ofar we have traveled a common fighway and friendsh D has aidac in hard places. In our HARTIAN of lMlwe have endeavored to include activities and pictures as mementos of these years together. As we graduate and take our diversified separate routes along unknown roads lying ahead, the truth of our theme -- A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step -- becomes clearer in meaning and reality. Dedication We, the Graduates of 1961, dedicate this HARTIAN to our parents in for giving us the opportunity to enrich our lives through education. Board of Education Herbert Hawley, Douglas Erickson, Jack Corbin, Vivian Dorman, Tom Foster President, Linford Davis, Herbert Brandel. HART PLANS FOR THE FUTURE Our Board of Education is made up of a group of busy men, willing to devote hours of time and their thinking to the problems of this school district. First, they determine the general school policies, the curriculum and the expenditures in connection with the daily running of the school in reference to the best interests of pupils and community. The Board is anxious to serve the best interests of all. During the year many hundreds of hours went into the planning of the much needed new buildings. Every detail had to be worked out, down to the last brick and the last dollar. There are so many factors to be considered and a decision made in each case, before the actual construction can be started. The Board is endeavoring to consider in every phase the best for all concerned, not just for the present, but for the future citizens who will be using these facilities as well. The Class of 61 wishes to express its appreciation to these men for their splendid spirit in all these matters. While we will never attend classes in the new building, we still wish to say Thank you for all your time and efforts put forth in the educational interests of our community. - Barbara Burmeister, A.B., M.A. Speech, Dramatics English Hodge Podge Assistants On Harry Caldwell, A.B. Future Steps We, the class of '61, realize that our futures hold many steps in store; the following is merely a quick look at what a few might be. Allen Aerts inherited some of his sister’s fortune last spring and at the ripe young age of twenty-one, he is able to retire. Duane Aerts is spending his spare time nowadays at the Horticultural Shows in Grand Rapids. He says it helps him learn how to use all the modern equipment on his farm. Have you seen the new model cars from Chrysler Corp? If you have, chances are they were test driven by Tom Balavitch. Last reports of Jim Behnke told us he was exercising his M.D. degree in Outer Mongolia, as a missionary. Donalyn Bruinix was last seen traveling in California as a member of the Dontom Evangelistic Team. Arlene Cargill has derived some good from her practice teaching, for she is now teaching third grade in Miami, Florida. Jean Cargill is now a traveling elementary teacher for the U. S. Air Force. At present she is teaching in Paris. The National Better Beauty Counsel has just awarded Siboney Cavazos with a trophy for best hair stylist of the year. Mike Cook, upon applying for his first mechanic job, presented his diploma with a great smile of satisfaction since his ambition was always to get himself out of school. Terry Corliss has completed quite an unusual feat. He recently played the starring role for the State Policemen Children’s Benefit play. Gary Culver is now the all-star football player for the newly formed Jackson City College. Emory Curtis retired last year after making his early million from his father's tree farm. Doug Drum has been spending more and more time in the barn recently; it takes more time with each addition to the herd. Dow Chemical has had to increase the price of their products in order to increase the salary of their brilliant employee, Kelly Eyestone. It seems Sharon Fitzpatrick's high school sketches of horses got into the hands of Post editors and this is where she now finds employment. Pat Foster has been entertaining her third grade classes lately with a new color hair-do each day. The Fuehring Air Plane Rental Service in Hart is only one of many at which Carl is making his fortune. Barbara Gardner has become Pat Foster’s personal hair dresser. It is the only way Pat can change color each day. Marjorie Gray has her federal loan all paid back, half of which was canceled upon her completion of her fifth year in teaching. Barbara Greiner is the best known nurse in Mercy Hospital; her happy smile wins her many friends. Dick Harp is now sports casting over W-I-C-U, he is very well accepted, we might add. Dale Haynor was last seen following a number one suspect in the recent burning of the old Hart High School. The people were quite disappointed since they'd wished to preserve it as an antique. Dick Hasty caught those notorious violators after much pursuing. This helps him maintain his perfect record of always getting his man. Terry Helmer is farming a nice place south of Hart and has six wonderful children—all girls. Remember how well he liked them in high school? Ron Herrygers has just made his first million. He may turn out to be another Rockefeller yet. Pat Hovey is an air-line stewardess for T.W.A. and makes frequent trips to Hart since we now have a new airport. Lynda Kidner is now traveling the world with the Waves and enjoying every minute of it. Lillian Landis is now one of the United States President’s executive secretaries. Diane Lehman is now a nurse in the Hart Hospital and is cheering up all male patients. Ken Lindgren is a construction engineer and has just finished inspection of the Makinac Bridge. LaRue Linke is a nurse in a famous men's hospital. She has recently recovered from a severe case of heart trouble. Rosalie Lipps is living on a huge ranch just north of Hart and she and her husband have six children attending Hart's new school. Linda Lipski is designing hair styles for the top Hollywood actresses. Louise Malburg is the Emily Post of today. Bob McGhan is a captain in the army. He is stationed in Alaska at present. Mike McCarty is world famous as a brain surgeon; having operated first on himself. Ida Merton is now combining business with pleasure by coaching cheerleaders at Michigan State University. Marilyn Moore is teaching her little ones readin', writin', and 'rithmetic. Jim Norwood recently won a trip around the world for writing the best research paper on Why Water Boils. Shirley Oomen is teaching in a deaf and dumb school. She is doing it to save her voice. Peggy Peacock is now executive secretary for the Grand Rapids Press. Pat Peters is now modeling for the top designers and traveling in Europe. Vernon Pettigrove has his own greenhouse in Hart and is very successful. Kay Potter is a beauty expert in Hollywood and operates a shop with a sign Male Actors Only. Leonard Robbins expects to be promoted to position of admiral in the U. S. Navy. Ron Robbins has a job with the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. That is the easy way to make money. Geoff Robinson hasn't stopped by just getting a college diploma. He now has his M.A.; P.H.D.; and M.D. Elaine Sanford has invented a new vitamin pill while working, at Park-Davis in Detroit. Marion Sayers is running her horses at Santa Anita. Her latest came in fifteen minutes late minus the jockey. Norton Schramm is studying at Yale University and reports say that he is doing quite well, although he still can't make up his mind what he wants to be. Butch Shogrencanbe very proud of his accomplishments in the World Olympics this year, for he won the International Olympic Sport Award. He ran the mile in three minutes and twenty seconds, this set a new world record. Mrs. Terry Postema, the former Mary Slocum, is living on a farm just east of Hart and enjoys being a farmer's wife. Jan Smith is tearing his hair out by the roots because a weed-killer he used on his 1000 acre farm has suddenly started to make every tiling grow bigger and faster and even the weeds won’t stop growing. Marjorie Snyder is an efficient bookkeeper for Dunn and Bradstreet. She is living in a penthouse in New York City. Mrs. Charles Brimmer, the former Linda Spitler, had a coming-out party for her daughter last month. The big event took place in the Brimmer home at 124738 Swanky Drive in Boston, Michigan. Rosemarie Standfuss is a secretary for the Bank of America in New York City. She has an extra insome from her florist shop on Broadway Street. Stanley Straight was on a quiz show on T.V. and won $10,000. He quickly invested it in the Stanley Steel Company and now is a millionaire and owns the quiz show. A1 Studer is still winning blue ribbons at the fair. He is doing very well with his farm in Elbridge. He is known as the World's Champion Cattle Raiser. Nancy Studer is a secretary for the Cherry Pie Institute of Michigan. Even though she is a working woman, she still has time to delight her family with her out of this world cherry pie. Phil Syer retired this year on his one hundredth birthday. He is still as frisky as when he was in high school and works out in his gym every morning at 6:00. Jean Tate is busy with her large family of small children. She is a pediatrician in the Children's Hospital in Hawaii. Brenda Thaler is living in New York City and is helping Arthur Murray with dancing lessons. You can see her gracefulness and pleasant smile each week on the Arthur Murray Show on T.V. The Air Force has a new member who has made quite a name for himself. Most everyone calls him General Charles Turner. Even though cows can't fly, their owners can and Jerry Trommater is certainly proving this in his Air Force service. He was the first man to see the blue cheese on the moon. Fred Vander Laan has just completed the new bridge from Muskegon to Milwaukee in record time. The newspapers call him the second Frank Lloyd Wright. Gloria Vander Zanden gives the commander of the Marines office that feminine touch although that is not all she does, she is his private secretary. Larry Van Sickle has become successful in farming in Elbridge. He raises everything from soup to nuts and that is hard to do. Virginia Wilde is an added attraction in the Oceana Hospital with her cheery smile and pleasant personality. The records have proved that the patients in Hart get well ten times faster than at any other hospital in the United States. Ted Wilson keeps busy keeping track of his large business. He is the owner of the 1,000 Wilson Mechanic Shops throughout the United States. Janette Willard went to the Muskegon Business School and liked it so much she decided to stay there. She is now the typing teacher there, and she likes it very much. Mary Ann Willard keeps busy with her job as secretary in the Farm Bureau office in Lansing. Bonnie Worth passed her state board exam and is now working for Peggy White in Muskegon. Her husband has only one fault with her job; he feels like he is coming home to a stranger because Bonnie can't make up her mind what color her hair should be. Tom Wygant finally reached the top. He is the President of the United States. People are still amazed at his winning because he ran on the W ygant ticket. The Hart Elementary School has just issued another teaching contract. This one went to a graduate of Hart. Her name is Sally Yaklin and she will be teaching kindergarten. We will now close the curtain of prophecy and hope for the best, get ready for the worst, and take what comes.
