Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1956 volume:

THE CLASS OF '56 PRESENTS The HARTIAN is the story of the 1956 graduates; their friends, classmates, teachers, activities, and achievements. Through the doors of Hart High we have gained a whole new outlook on life. As we leave four, or perhaps more, high school years behind us; we wish to leave this yearbook as a momento. We hope this HARTIAN will recall many forgotten memories and show our appreciation of the right to have an education. We, the seniors of Hart High, wish to dedicate our Hartian to the woman who made it possible. Through her hard work, understanding, and many headaches, we have produced this book. Her aid has been invaluable throughout our high school years. First as our class advisor for two years, as prom consultant, and last, but not least, our main spoke in putting out our Hartian. We cannot express in words alone how much we value her help, but we feel that she knows our appreciation. So, simply, Thank you, Mrs. Frost . Everyday we see these same familiar faces, walking in the halls, cheering at a game, chaperoning a dance, advising school activities, coaching our teams, teaching in a classroom, or just walking down the street; the teachers, backbone of our nation and educators of our future destiny. THE SPITLER SCHOOL The Spitler School was started in the Fall of 1954 and was finished for occupancy on September 26, 1955. The building is located on an eight acre site three blocks west of the high school building on the new extension of Johnson Street which was laid out and graded during the summer of 1954. As part of this street development the City of Hart contracted to construct a fill across Russell Creek which fill then became part of the Johnson Street extension. The dirt for this fill was taken off the school site which provided plenty of dirt leaving a level school yard. This fill makes the new school site a centrally located one, but it is also of considerable benefit to the citizens of the community providing a more ready communication between the east and west side of the city. The Spitler School construction was the result of two years work on the part of the Citizens’ Advisory Committee called by the board of education to study the school needs under the very able chairmanship of Mrs. Robert Munger. The immediate result of the work of this committee was the presentation of a $295,000.00 bond issue to the electorate in November, 1953. This issue was designed to cover the costs of a new elementary school and a shop and music building. The issue was defeated at the polls, and was followed the following May by another issue for the construction of the elementary school only for $150,000.00. This issue passed with a convenient majority. The Board chose Guido A. Binda Architect and Associates of Battle Creek to draw up plans and specifications for the new building. Construction contracts were let to the following firms: General construction to the Allegan Construction and Supply Company of Allegan, Michigan; plumbing and heating work was awarded to the Port City Plumbing and Heating of Muskegon; and the electrical work was awarded to the Industrial Electric Company of Allegan. Michigan. The corner stone for the building was laid on November 10, 1955, and the dedication and open house was held on Sunday afternoon, December 4, 1955. The Honorable Earl C. Pugsley gave the dedication address. BOARD OF EDUCATION VIVIAN DORMAN JACK CORBIN NEIL SPITLER We owe the men on this Board of Education a great deal of graditude for maintaining our high standards and the continous strive for better facilities for us. the students of Hart High School. We, the Seniors, wish to express our sincere appreciation for their invaluable work which has been done so well while we have been here....... Thank You! FRED W. H. HALL M. A. Superintendent American History Dear Seniors, You are living in a world of change. This fact has never been so forcibly brought to the attention of many of us than during the last fifty years. During this short time, less than the lifetime of people today, we have vaulted from the horse and buggy gay “90 s” celebrated nostalgically in poetry and song into the present and vibrant atomic age. We have seen the passing of the blacksmith shop, the livery barn, the harness shop, the old general store, the simple home life, and the Fourth of July celebration with its fireworks and patriotic oratory. We have seen the advent of the garage, the gasoline station, commercialized entertainment, the chain store, superhighways, heavier than air travel, and television. We may see atomic power harnessed to full peace time use in science and industry, space ships, flights to the moon, control of weather conditions, and world brotherhood. This is a challenging and exciting time in which to live; a time to be enjoyed by those who will prepare themselves to live in this world of change. Basic to preparation to living in a world of change is adaptability which can be achieved only through'an understanding of the broad principles underlying our culture. These broad principles are best understood by taking advantage of the liberal education offered you in our schools and colleges today followed by a continued and keen desire to know and learn throughout life. All this does not minimize the need for job training, but there must be a sufficiently broad background to enable you to move in another direction in case the demand for your training no longer exists. Sincerely yours. Fred W. H. Hall Superintendent . . u k WENDELL HILL M. A. Principal Civics TO PARENTS, STUDENTS, AND TEACHERS OF THE COMMUNITY OF HART — Our school community, which reflects the wider community in which it is found, is described and pictured in the “Hartian.” We are proud of the part that so many people have played in order to make our school life both pleasant and successful. It is with people then, that 1 would like to concern my remarks. The individual student has more to do with his or her happiness and success than anyone else. You must live your own life, no one can do it for you. A part of this thing called “growing-up” is a realization of that fact. However, you do not live alone in this world, so happiness and success also depend upon learning how to get along with others. Your boy and girl friends, parents, teachers, and other very important individuals in your environment. Young people living together and growing up together makes a thrilling experience. Sharing happiness, sorrows, successes, and failures with others produces many life long friendships. Many of these cherished experiences are recorded in the “Hartian. The patient understanding of your parents has helped you over many of the rough spots thus far encountered on the road of life. The greatest satisfaction that your parents realize in life is when you grow and develop into happy and successful adults. A good share of your youthful life is spent in association with a group of adults called teachers. Your teachers assist your parents in the task of helping you develop into happy and successful adults. Teachers believe that happy and successful young people become happy and successful adults. The “Hartian” contains a record of many enjoyable associations that have developed between teachers and students of Hart High School. The ' Hartian” is an historical record of the activities and events in which the people of Hart High School took part. We look forward, with a great deal of anticipation, to reading and seeing what events this year’s Hartian Staff has selected as representative of our school community. Sincerely yours. Wendell P. Prettij H .ir ’ Joijtt S. (t.'nd peo-nn Xnsef r i-Ue” PROPHECY Gathered together for the first time in ten years, is the class of ’56. They are here from all different walks of life. The reunion is being held on the beautiful green campus of the University of Hart. Since this is the first time we've all been together a class meeting would be appropriate. Our Senior Class secretary, now married, is taking the minutes, and as you might have guessed it’s the former Charlene Alvesteffer. Jim Corliss is acting as president. He’ll also be taking pictures later for his newspaper, “The Mars News. ’ In case you aren’t familiar with what each has been doing, here's a little about each one. Clair Purdy has been quite busy since it’s graduation time again. As you know he has taken over Tourcottes business. Barbara Ragina has an interesting job. She makes football and basketball uniforms for West Point, but to make it more interesting Norman Lohroff is going to school there. Linda Reid, here with her old friends, is now the new owner of the “Reid Steak House.’ Shirley Schaner is her head waitress. Joyce Siler is married to her man from Walkerville. Deanna Jones is with her. Deanna certainly has an ideal family. Before the reunion we went down to the A P Store and Tom Kokx is still working there. Ron Greiner, an ambitious Weare farmer, furnished the vegetables for the fabulous dinner. Boy, you should see them! Nothing but the best I Hugh Dale Hale furnished quite a rare selection of meat. Of course he had the help of his two sons--hunters just like their dad. Lois Hammerle (Greiner) has been keeping her chickens corn fed. As you all know she furnished some of the chickens today. Isn’t Pat Herrygers a good example of how married life and a career can be combined ? Pat Robbins’ waiting days are over. She’s Mrs. Gamble now. Dale Schlee is here, and he’s the first one in Hart with a jet-propelled Jaguar. Gerry Schafer has just returned from Europe, where he has been studying livestock. Merlin Jacobs is here with his wife and family. He’s a prosperous fruit farmer now. Jackie Johnson, sorry to say, couldn’t make it today. She’s just bringing home her new triplets. Marshall Jorissen still lives in Elbridge, which has grown to be a big community. Virginia Mead is a career girl now. Bob McKenzie is in the Army. He has just been promoted to captain. Claire Piper has a thriving business in Minnesota. He manufactures stationery. Louis Griffin just walked by. He’s just as easy going as ever. Dick Keck lives in Detroit now. He’s really a great Detroit Lion fan. Joyce Kellogg looks like she’s doing all right. Her husband runs the new chemical factory. Margaret Tariske is the new majorette sponsor at the University of Hart. Fred Tubbs has just been voted the ideal husband. Don Walsworth is an explorer scout master. Of course we always knew he liked the out-doors. Do we hear a sales talk? Yes, it’s Henry Walters. He’s selling those new sequin studded shoe strings. Lorraine Wheeler couldn’t come today. She’s working with a missionary in India. Lois Doyle has been abroad. She’s having trouble learning the English language again. Carl Wiegand certainly hasn’t aged in the last decade. Still has his red hair. Shirley Wiegand has a good disposition. Know why ? She smokes camels. Jim Cleveland, a noted scientist, has just discovered the cure for the “common cold.’’ He sure was good in science. Here with her three darling girls is Nancy Cloud. Lucky kids, they all have hair like their mom. Say, that laugh sounds familiar. But of course, it’s Dave Cole. By the sound of things he’s just the same. Just talking to Linda Cloud and it seems she’s head secretary for J. C. Franklin Inc. Jack Franklin came today with his head secretary and bride, Linda Cloud. Drexell Curtis was one of the lucky girls who got married after high school. Did you see in the “Mars News” who got Secretary of the Month? It was none other than Eleanor Dassance. Sorry to say Kay “Raye” Dorman couldn’t make it today. She’s been so busy since she took over the Martha Raye show. It was nice talking to Ruth Babbitt again. It was just last week that we danced to the music of her trumpet at Fruitport. Say look who else is here. Norrene Anderson. We didn’t think she could come since she’s been so busy with her dancing career. Someone just had to stay in Hart and keep the town going. That job couldn’t fall on anyone but Jerry Blackmer. Margaret Boettcher is a successful business woman. She has established one of the biggest businesses in Hart. We just exchanged “Hello with Karen Bradford. She teaches at the University of Hart. We always knew Hart would someday be a college town. Here comes Donna “Spurs” Amstutz. Can you imagine, she came all the way from her horse ranch in Arizona. Connie Brandel looks happy. Didn’t know her at first with her short, brown hair. Say have you heard about Ken Buffum’s son? He’s going to be a football player just like his dad. Oh well, as the saying goes. “Like father like son. Wasn’t it wonderful of Barb Bush to furnish that beautiful cake for the reunion? You know she has her own delicatessen. Linda Tompkins has just taken over Ding Dong SchooL She sure has a way with kids. Ronnie Sauser is raising fleas and he said he had to start from scratch. But now the business has gone to the dogs so he is taking up dairy farming. Harold Irey is the manager of the new Kroger store in Mears. Ed Hammerle is no longer a prisoner of love.’ He has shed his ball and chain and got married. The Lyle Gale’s stopped by on their vacation. By the looks of their two boys, they’re going to be athletes just like their dad. Bill Olendorf has taken the job of being the new coach and math teacher at the new college. Jerry Vershuren said he just couldn’t miss being here today. He always was one for parties. Today he’s on the refreshment committee. If you are looking for the latest thing in sport clothes, Jim Tate has a fine selection in his sport shop. Lorena Rassmussen didn’t have far to come today. She’s living in Mears now. We want to congratulate Emmajane Slocum on her latest hair creation. She's a very popular hair stylist. Amy Salisbury is studying drama in England. Tom Stevens is the American Ambassador to the Kremlin. He’s settling an agreement with Molotov. Sylvia Jetleb is now the head nurse at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Sure is nice to see the old gang again. Martha Greiner is here with her successful husband, a graduate from Vanderbilt University, and she’s still as much fun as ever. You have probably all read in the paper that Judy Graham was voted the most courageous airline hostess of the year for her heroic action in saving forty-nine people from the burning wreckage of her plane. Marie Coultes has the luck. Her husband is not only good-looking but he’s a good lawyer and cook. Barbara Robbins looks happy with her big family. She always did enjoy children and they like her, too. As for us, Laura Lee Kempf and Janet Van Bergen, we have to rush off. We’re on early duty at the hospitaL Oh, you’re wondering if we’re married ? The Commercial Club was organized this year for the purpose of furthering the interests of students in the business world. We not only included secretarial positions in our program but clerking as well. To be eligible for membership a member must be taking or have taken at least one commercial subject. We have participated in many educational activities such as hearing a speech by Clare Bright about the desired qualifications of a clerk, visiting Judge Meehan’s office to learn how a dictaphone operates, visiting the telephone office to see the switch board as well as studying the new switch board in school, visiting Davenport Institute in Grande Rapids, and discussing business schools in general. One principal project we undertook was issuing cards to be filled out by commercial students regarding name, address, age, present job if any, wages, desire for a different position, and fall plans. The purpose of such a project was to assist Miss Dodge in filling jobs when calls come in from various employers. The librarian assistants learned to use the library facilities and in turn helped other students who were not familiar with the library. The duties of these assistants were carding and shelving books, keeping the shelves in order, making posters, and running errands. During the past year we have taken part in a great many activities. The most exciting of these was being host for the meeting of the North Central Division of the Student Librarian Assistants Association of Michigan, more commonly known as S. L. A. A. M. which was held in Hart, November 19, 1955. In March several of our group anended the spring meeting of S. L. A. A. M. which was held in the Muskegon Senior High School. The Meeting was enjoyed by all. During this year’s program we have made a lot of posters, a good many of which were used during Book Week. The biggest project we undertook was to plan and carry out a program for the Spitler Grade School library. We worked out a plan for having a story hour for the children in the Grade SchooL The student assistants who took part in the story-hour program were Nancy Cushman, Shirley Robinson, and Henry Walters.
