The foreward of the 1945 Memoir stated The primary purpose of any annua! is to help recall vividly the fond memories of high school dayi Ve, the staff, will have ■ached our goal if this annual, in years to :come, fulfills its name. Since that time 90 Memoirs have been [rinted. We H pe ihaithe 198R Memoir can equal the quality of its’predecessM Our Story Begins .. . On August 26,1985, the school doors opened once again for another year of hard work. Each student walked through the doors with different emo- tions. The freshmen began the year with high hopes of what was to come and excitement of finally being in high school. The sophomores came back quietly knowing that they would soon face Mr. Baker's Biology class and the Basic Skills Test, luniors entered with ex- citement. They knew that this would be their year to launch the prom. The seniors entered the doors for their final year with mixed emotions. They were excited about finishing high school, but were unsure of what the future holds for them. It was the Best of Times . . . Fond memories fill our high school years. Many firsts occur during high school. Everyone will remember the first date, dance, prom, and special person. As the senior class of 1986 looks back, they realize that the last four years have really been 'the Best of Times.'' . . . the Worst of Times However, our high school years are not all tun and play. The com- bination of homework, exams, after school jobs and extra-curricular ac- tivities often becomes overwhelming Sometimes the long hours do not seem worth the effort but in the end we see that our dedication and determination pays off. ... the Spring of Hope As the new year started, there was also a boost of school spirit. It was a year of new beginnings. Cheerleader, Suzanne Holbrook said, The best part about the new spirit is that it's contagious ... WATCH OUT!” On October 4, our varsity football team defeated Monroe 21-7 for a Homecoming victory ... our Spring of Hope” had materialized. 8 “Last year's team had some individual efforts. The difference this year is that we play as a team, win or lose. Chad Sanford “I feel that the team is becoming a close knit group instead of individuals trying to play their own game. I think that in the near future it will be something special and an honor to play football at Hart County High School. Brent Vickery 9 We Had Everything Before Us . . . Life has many ups and downs High school days are tilled with tough decisions and many problems It is our choice as to how we adjust to these. We must never give up We must accept what life has to offer blJr 8 ii A Time To Reach For The Stars .. . Dawn brings about a new today; this today is ours, a treasure house of opportunities, a sea of possibilities. With the many opportunities that we have the world can be ours. Set high goals and try to be the best that you can be. For Robin Atkinson and Sheryl Norris, September 20th marked an outstanding achievement - nomination for McDonald's All-American Band (Picture at left) 12 To Everything There Is A Season . . . A A . a time to break down, and a time to build up; time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; . a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; . a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 Holy Bible 1986 Memoir Staff Few people realize the amount of work involved in the production of the Memoir. To most students, it is merely a book that appears magically every year in May, is signed by friends, then tucked away on a shelf for later reference. For us, the Memoir Staff, this book represents much more. It reveals countless hours of hard work and dedication, which starts in May by selling ads and continues even after yearbook class ends in February. We strive to represent the entire student body and the school year as a part of the history of Hart County High School. We hope the Memoir will have a very special meaning for everyone and through it we will have contributed our part in The Never Ending Story. WE MOURN SEVEN HEROS' January 28, 1986 — Barely a minute into its 10th orbitital mission, the shuttle Challenger exploded. America and the world watched and joined together expressing shock, grief and sadness. In a memorial service at the Johnson Space Center President Reagan delivered the following eulogy. The sacrifice of your loved ones has stirred the soul of our nation and, through the pain, our hearts have been opened to a profound truth: the future is not free, the story of all human progress is one of struggle against all odds. We learned again that this America, which Abraham Lincoln call the last best hope of man on earth, was built on heroism and no- ble sacrifice. It was built by men and women like our seven star voyagers, who answered a call beyond duty, who gave more than was ex- pected or required, and who gave it with little thought to worldly reward .. . Dick, Mike, Judy, Ed, Ron, Greg and Christa, your families and your country mourn your passing. We bid you goodbye. We will never forget you. For those who knew you well and loved you, the pain will be deep and enduring. The nation, too, will long feel the loss of her seven sons and daughters, her seven good friends. We can find consolation only in faith, for we know in our hearts that you who flew so high and so proud now make your home beyond the stars, safe in God's promise of eternal life. BAND 96 Seniors and VIP's: LORDS OF DISCIPLINE Band Captain — Parke Skelton Field Commander — Kevin Strange Kevin Strange — A First In His Own Right Kevin Strange assumed the position of field commander at the start of marching season and instantly broke a long tradi- tion at H.C.H.S. Kevin was the first male and the first black field commander in the history of the Bulldog Marching Band. The pride of his achievement could be seen as he captured the atten- tion of the crowd everytime he stepped onto the field. However, Kevin soon found that the responsibilities coupled with the stress of being a field com- mander did not stand up to the stereotypical glamour we are so inclined to think. So as the last game rolled about, Kevin felt relieved and tired thanking God that the pressure was finally over. But deep within his heart and forever in his memories are locked the good times he had as field commander of the Hart Co. High School Bulldog Marching Band. I did the best I could on and off the field. It was an experience I'll never forget. The Bulldog Marching Band — Celebr History of the Band Program The Hart County School system hired its full-time in- strumental music teacher in 1961 when Mr. Cecil Fields was employed to teach both band and chorus at the high school, band at the Hartwell Elementary, and classroom music at each of the five county elementary schools. He left after two years to be replaced by Mr. William Taylor who served in the same capacity from 1963 to 1965. At his departure the Board of Education acknowledged that the job was great enough for two instructors. So, they created a classroom teaching position which was filled by Mrs. Marylene Basinger and a band director position which was filled that same year by the current band director Ron Jonson. Mr. jonson began teaching instrumental music at all elementary schools of the county allowing students to enter the band program in the sixth grade. When the Hart County Schools were intergraded, the training school was converted to H.C.J.H. and each of the elementary schools became grades 1-6. At that point band instruction was discontinued in the elementary schools. Students entered the band program in the seventh grade, the first year of junior high school, a prac- tice which continues to the present. Prior to the year of 1961 the band at H.C.H.S. was directed on a part-time basis by music education majors from the University of Georgia. Those students would come to Hartwell after classes at UGA one, two, or three days a week, depending on their class load. They somehow man- aged to prepare a band for halftime shows in the fall, parades and concerts dur- ing the rest of the year. The band would meet in their homemade band barn, a building erected totally with volunteer labor and donated material ( not one dime of tax money ). This building still exists today, but now functions as a weight room for student athletes. Under the leadership of current director, the high school band has increased from 42 students (grades 8-12) in 1965 to well over 100 students (grades 9-12) to- day. The marching band numbers approximately 140 this year. FEATURES 121 SENIOR CLASS - TRYING TO KICK THAT 12 YEAR HABIT Warning: The Surgeon General has determined that school could be hazardous to your emotions. A cute statement, huh? Sort of funny. It brings a quick smile to your face, doesn't it? Some things are habit forming and most things that are habit forming are bad for you. But what about school? School is habit forming. How many times have you woke up at 6:45 a.m. to get ready for school only to remember that it's a holiday? Yeah, school is habit forming, but it's not bad for you. However, it takes alot of courage and it brings alot of pain to give it up. I'm not talking about the homework, classwork, or tests; I'm talking about the friendships and relationships that are made during school. Think of all that you've done,12 years is a long time to spend with friends, old and new. Saying goodbye to them will be one of the hardest things you'll have to do. It will be one of the hardest habits you will ever have to kick. Senior Class Officers plot to sell the school now that they are finished! Baby pictures you say? That's old as the hills. Yes, but we decided to take the old idea and add something very special - a personal message from the parents. First we busied ourselves sending letters to all parents of seniors. The letter stated that the first 50 responses would be accepted to publish, what the cost would be, and finally that we wanted it to be kept a secret from the seniors until the yearbook came back in the spring. Response was overwhelming! Letters, photos, and messages started pouring in immediately. Many parents ex- pressed their appreciation for being allowed to add this special touch to the Senior Section. Weeks before our deadline we had received well over 50 responses. Finally we broke in and added one more page which meant we could accept a total of 65 responses. Our goals for this section can be summarized as follows: 1. EN)OY - See how much your friends have changed or stayed the same over the last 18 years. 2. REMINISCE - Students and parents perhaps this picture will spark a delightful memory from the past. 3. Tina Wilson JUNIOR CLASS -MOVES FROM MIDDLE TO TOP To most students their junior year is one filled with thoughts of being in between, not really being on top and yet not being on the bottom. Trying to balance your school, extracurricular activities, and home responsibilities can seem pretty frustrating as is evident by the following quotes from Juniors on: What is it like to be a junior? | 2 4C I It's alot of written work, but the fact that next year I'll be a senior keeps me going. It's not that bad as a matter of fact, it makes me wish I were a freshman again. It will all be over too soon! Harrison Mit- chell I'm looking forward to be a senior. It's been one of the best years we have had. Gwen Freeman I think that my junior year has been the best because opportunities have been opened to me. Dee Ann Brooks If I weren't a cheerleader, my junior year would just be another year. Pam McDowell Never a dull moment with our spirit-rising class! However, another language floats about originating from our one and only Class of '88. So, in the continuing adventure to enrich mankind we pre- sent : The Sophomore Class Dictionary of Various Phrases and Expressions. Flick (flik) - An awkward per- son or thing. Dominant (dom 'e nent) - Having superiority in a given subject; such as football, basket- ball, etc. Spaz (spaz) - Having no control over ones actions. Bogus (bo'gus) -Something that is not right or is corrupt. Babus (ba'bus) - Slang for babies. Charlie Mick (char'le - mik) - To excell highly in all actions. Dud (dud) - A complete failure To be true, this is only a portion of the vocabulary used by those wonderful kids. But, hey, it has been said that great things come from the mouths of SOPHOMORES! What's the worst day out of the year? Why the first day of school, of course. However, if you're a freshman that horrible day is the source for many a gruesome nightmare. We try not to remember that day, but as you grow older you need a good laugh. Therefore, I, Alan Martin, Classes Editor, attempted to create a Mad-Lib recalling a freshman's first day of school, and who better to fill it out than a Freshman? So thanks to the brilliant and creative mind of Rex Martin, the stereotypical Freshman, his first day of school has been recorded for all eternity. As I walked onto the campus of HCHS, I was flooded with many emotions, such as fear, homesickness, and frustration, not to mention boredom. My mind raced back to the events of that morning to recall if I had forgotten anything. No, I had everything. My Rubber Duckie, Pacifier, He-man Lunch Box, this thought was banished from my mind when the homeroom bell rang. I wiggled my way through the millions of bodies that crowded those seem- ingly endless hallways. By and by, I finally plopped down in the hard wooden desk of my homeroom. From that moment on, my fate was sealed. After being beaten and ridiculed all day long, I crawled out of the doors of HCHS, a sole survivor of the first day of school!!!!!!!!!! You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons. Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing. Yet the timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness, And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream. But if in your thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons. And let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing.
