I Dedication It is not often that we find people who are willing to do much more than their part, who are willing to take on the jobs that aren t always easy, and who do these things because they care. J It is people like this who make our school a little more pleasant for everyone. To whom we esteem so great we would like to dedicate the 1973 MEMOIR. For your undying enthusiasm, your infinite patience, your way of understanding, and your willingness to do so much more than you are asked, we dedicate to you the 1973 MEM- Coach and Mrs. Gene Griep 3 Foreword The definition of a Memoir is a report or record of happen- ings based on the writer’s observations. That is exactly what we have tried to do in this year’s yearbook — to record some of the happenings of this school year in a fashion that we think will help you recall most vividly the happenings in your individual school year. Not only have we tried to capture and record what hap- pens at HCHS, we have also tried to capture some of the feeling and atmosphere in our school. Several years from now when you turn the pages of this book, we would like for you to do more than remember what you did; we would like for you to feel the way you felt during the years you spent at HCHS. And now, as you look through this yearbook for the first time, we hope that you will find a part of yourself and the way you have felt this school year. 4 V Table of Contents Administration.....................18 Features ..........................30 Sports.............................58 Activities ........................90 Classes...........................130 Advertisements....................184 BILLY MOOREHEAD DAN EVANS Not enough can be said about our photographers, Billy Moore- head and Dan Evans. Without pictures there would be no MEMOIR and without Billy and Dan there would be no pictures. The MEMOIR staff would like to thank Dan and Billy for their valuable services and untiring efforts in helping to create the 1973 MEMOIR. Summer ’72 8 SCHOOL DAZE IS HERE AGAIN School days 1973 — filled with the roar of the crowd, the sounds of the band, and the thrill of friendship. Spirits started high and rose to meet each new day with promises that the best was yet to come. It was September and the beginning was good. 11 12 13 Each day is a routine. Each day we walk through the same doors, sit in the same desks, and lean against the same lockers. But, out of the monotony of routine comes a clearer understanding and a higher goal. Keeping up with first downs, passes, intercep- tions, fumbles, tackles, and so on can be quite a hand full some nights. David Hill, Billy Cash, Billy Reed, and Paul Fisher served as our managers. It’s not easy playing “servant” to forty boys. They love football and really want to help. To these five boys we owe a special thanks! 63 + One thing we could not have done without was our cheerleaders. They kept spirit up, win or lose. Long hours of prac- tice and attending cheer- leader camp helped develope them into a fine squad. They built up spirit with pep rallies and by selling spirit punch. Our cheerleaders were surely an asset to our team. 65 Jeff McCurley David Saliba Martin Brown Richard Moore Not shown: Tyler Verdery, Calvin Bryant. The players learn from their team mates, coaches, and oppo- nents. They learn what the word ''team” is all about. The memories of the '72 season shall never be forgotten! 70 HCHS VARSITY GIRLS: Front Row (1-r): Margie Cook, Wanda Moorhead, Doris Craft, Carol Martin. Mary Gaines. Becky Nicholas. Angie McGee. Harry Strickland, Trent Hicks, Robert Heard. Tyler Verdery, Anthony Hunt. Bernard Harper, and Coach Morris. Coach Sherrill Whitaker As Coach of the Bulldog B-team Coach Morris your phrase Get the baseline will echo in our minds as we remember Basketball '73. We appreciate the drive, determination, and confidence you gave us Coach, for these are the qualities needed to win. As we reflect upon Basketball ’73 some of us will remember you Coach Whitaker for the way you folded your coat neatly and then threw it on the bench. But most of all, we will remember you as the man who always knew the right course to take when tensions rose high and deci- sions had to be made. Coach Willard Morris What does being a manager mean to me? Wade — “Working a lot and having a lot of fun. Cathy — Personal satisfaction. I’ve gained many friends through basketball. Billy — It has taught me a meaning of basketball that I never knew before. Max — Many hours of hard work but enjoying all of them. This was Cathy and Wade’s last year as managers. They will be greatly missed next year but Max and Billy will be around to carry on with the clothes washing, statistics keeping, and errand running. Eight girls wearing the big “H” and leading a yelling crowd — this is the essence of the Bulldog spirit which leaves a ringing in the ears wherever it goes. The cheerleaders have had much to do with our rising school spirit. Their enthusiasm at all basket- ball games and pep rallies have stimulated both the student body and the team. All of the cheerleaders did an outstanding job of leading the fans, showing not only great spirit but also good sportsmanship — practicing, learning new cheers, giving pep rallies, and deco- rating halls. Whether at basketball games or pep rallies, in rain or shine, at home or away, where there are Bulldogs there are eight orange and white-clad cheerleaders . . . jumping, yelling, and singing. Senior Players Suddenly you’re standing in a pitch black gym. A light flashes down on the center of the court. Ladies and Gentle- men — You are now in BULL- DOG COUNTRY!! The crowd roars. The players run to the center, the gleam of victory shining in their eyes. You are caught up in everyone's enthu- siasm and are about to experi- ence what is known as basket- ball — Hart County style. IT’S ALL IN THE STATE OF MIND If you think you’re beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t, It's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you’ve lost. For out in the world you find; Success begins with a fellow’s will; It’s all in the state of mind. Full many a race is lost Ere even a step is run; And many a coward fails Ere even his work begun. Think big, and your deeds will grow; Think small and you'll fall behind; Think that you can, and you will. It's all in the state of mind. If you think you’re out classed, you are; You've got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can win a prize. Life’s battle's don’t always go To the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins Is the fellow who thinks he can. To win the game is great; To play the game is greater; To love the game is greatest!! I am a great believer in luck . . . but The harder I work, the more luck I Seem to have. 88 Activities 89 Memoir Advisor — Mrs. Teel Business Editor — Mary Dendy Editor — Claire Hardigree Sports Editor — Luanne Snyder Editors Features Editors — Donna Morgan and Pat O’Neal Classes Editor — Peggy O’Barr Activities Editors — Sandra Richardson and Patsy Medlin Members are Debbie Hamlin, Steve Atkinson, Cathy Eubank, Barbara Mackey, Joyce Powell, Shirley Price, Terrell Morrison, Mitch Skelton, Bill Marett, Barbara Sturghell.
