The World Awaits You In the 70 s The Dawning Knowledge, intelligence, wisdom, happiness, inner peace, patriotism, duty, decision, security, love, careers, responsibility, realization, friendship . . . the dawning of a new era. of the 70 s 3 Classes.........11 The mind's eye is a camera which prints forever; its lens, the patterns of human activity; and its paper, the mind. Here we have a more complete rendition that the dynamic mental camera could never catch. A port- folio of new memories and expe- riences .. . The Dawning of the 70's. Life is a winding lane. We expe- rience fellowship with new students and teachers, and our community—a fellowship that grows as the year passes. We learn rapidly of tradition, but also become increasingly aware of new-found freedoms as an indi- vidual. Life is a cycle, recurring, ever- moving, ever-widening. Fall comes with school again, new friends added to old, homework, recalling past knowledge and putting it to use, club activities, football, crisp frosty air, a burst of glorious color, burning leaves .. . then winter with wool skirts at last, heavy coats, warm fire- places, basketball, hard studying, exams, holidays, that first snowflake, hot chocolate, the reality of Christ- mas, a new year, confetti and horns, 69?—no—70, resolutions .. . and now spring with soft warm air, bright smiles, picnics, baseball, banquets, concerts, plays, a world of green, magic, exams again, the last mad rush .. . After graduation and good- bys we will reach out for a new and better way of life. Tomorrow will challenge and encourage us to go on to summer, to maturity, to an adult life built on knowledge and memories of these hectic, frustrating, rewarding days. Let's go now and probe the 70's. Emerson said Hitch your wagon to a star. One can see in those six words the summary of human achievement and an everlasting in- spiration to the future of man. Sports........ 1 09 4 Organizations 139 Advertisements 181 5 EDDY MOORHEAD February 6, 1952 — May 18, 1969 So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. Thanatopis William Cullen Bryant 6 When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music. He alone is great who turns the voice of the wind into a song made sweeter by his own loving. To one whom we esteem so great we dedicate the 1970 Memoir. His contribu- tions are countless; the programs he has initiated, numerous; his influence, pro- found. For his unflagging interest, his unceasing dedication and his continuing attempt to fill us with an insatiable desire to learn more of our world and meet new and exciting challenges, we appreciate him. With great pride and pleasure we salute you, MR. RON JONSON. 7 9 President Mark Gordon Seniors Class of 1970 Secretary Sharon Saliba Treasurer Tere LeCroy Vice-presidents: (l-r) Cynthia McDougal. Then as you learn your way around and make new friends you begin to relax. It really wasn't as bad as you thought it would be. This is a year that you will remember for the rest of your life. You will be doing so many things for the first time. Many of them will be important and many very small, but to you as an individual they will be the beginning of a new life. The eighth grade football team was composed of 33 boys from all grammar schools in the county including the eighth grade at HCHS. They played Stephens County their first game and tied it 0 to 0. The next five in a row were lost by only a few points. To end the season the Bullpups lost to Commerce 24 to 6. The Pups were lead by Johnny Clem's running and Rickey McCurley's quarterbacking. Defen- sive standouts were Mitch Skelton, Doy Johnson, and Marty Howell. Captains were Johnny Clem and Rickey McCurley. All year long the Pups moved the ball well but they had difficulty scoring. These boys were coached by Coach Gordon Bailey who said he thought they did well for their first year. The eighth graders played basketball with the Hartwell Elementary team which is coached by Lee Woolbright, Sr. This team competed against the teams from other county schools. 68 Danny Alewine Wayne Alexander Tonnie Ankerich Charles Atkinson Sheryl Atkinson Martha Jean Ayers Mary Lou Bailey Kenny Barnes Lyn Barton Steve Boles Bob Bowers Dan Bowers Cynthia Bratcher Ronald Bratcher Stanley Brock Billy Broom Dale Brown Pat Buffington Greg Cantrell Judy Cape Steve Carey Chan Chitwood Mike Christian Bob Clark Marie Clarke Johnny Clem David Cleveland Eddie Cleveland Stewart Cleveland Terry Cleveland Diane Cobb Carold Cobb Cathy Cook Barbara Cordell Eddie Cordell Marshall Craft Sheila Craft Delores Crittendon Paula Cromer Cathy Daniel Donald Davis Mary Dendy Darrell Dodson Rhonda Doker Barbara Duncan Cathy Edmunds Carey Ensley Debbie Estes Louie Farin Donald Fleming Tommy Fleming Lynn Floyd Russ Floyd Ray Frye Hala Gaines Linda Haltom Mary Sue Hayes Martha Sue Hembree Denise Hicks David Hill 69 Subfreshmen Anticipate We've got a secret. They mean long hours of tiresome practice, high hopes and sometimes the lonely feeling of defeat as well as victory. Coach Al Westmoreland coached the Baseball team. Spring Sports The yearbook deadlines come too early for actual coverage of spring sports. The baseball, track, and golf teams compete against area and region schools and have brought home outstand- ing records in the past. A few of the boys started their batting practice early this year. These boys tried out for the 1970 Track team: (I. to r.) Terry, why are you laughing while Coach is trying to show you how to hold a golf club? 139 Ann Senkbeil, editor-in-chief of the 1970 Memoir, points out the deadline to other staff members. Meeting that all-important deadline was a hard job. Brain power? was used by Gay Holbrook, classes editor, in devising new ways of presenting the classes section. Wednesday mornings usually found Gail McGee, organizations editor, in a whirl. Those were picture making days. They always ended with a headache, but also a feeling of accomplishment. Cindy Vandiver and Kathy Dismuke worked as co-editors of the Features Section. Making those pictures fit into the right spaces took much time and effort. Keeping up with the Memoir's finances was one of the hardest jobs of all. Debbie Dodson served as Business Editor. Her job began last spring with the assignment of advertisements to staff members. Football, basketball, golf, baseball and track were sports which had to be covered by Sports Editor, Tere LeCroy. STAFF MEMBERS INCLUDE: Rusty Bartlett, David Boles, Kathy Dismuke, Debbie Dodson, Danny Evans, Linda Fulbright, Greg Gaines, Tom Hardigree, Jolene Heaton, Gay Holbrook, Bobbi Hutchens, Karol Kotal, Tere LeCroy, Cynthia McDougal, Gail McGee, Annette Reed, Ann Sanders, Ann Senkbeil, Gail Spears, Cindy Vandiver. Memoir You, the average student have no idea of the time, work, and effort which is behind the book which you are now holding. Things begin in the spring and continue all summer with the advertising campaign. How many ads have you sold? None? I've sold $300 worth. So what, you got all the big stores. The summer is spent in swiping ideas from other yearbooks, magazines, T.V., newspapers, and other people's brains. First thing in the fall comes that rat race of individual pictures. Will you please change blouses? Yes, you must wear a tie. Get that hair out of your eyes! Back to class! Now! Wednesday after Wednes- day, announce those times, arrange those chairs, hurry, headaches, line up, looking right this way, every- body happy? ... Snap ... No back talk, put those hands down, knees turned to the side, please. Ball games to be covered. You mean the season is over and you missed the pictures? Hey! Catch that action. Who ever heard of posed candid shots? Rough drafts? Rough is the word, all right. Crop, proportion and stamp the pictures. Shall we let it bleed?—off the edge or into the gutter? With creativity, imagination, precision, vivid word pictures—SWEAT—write that copy. Please put it neatly on the final copy sheets so Miss C. can proof while she pulls her hair out and strains her eyes over the confusion. Seal it quickly for mailing before we find more mistakes! Wait for the proofs. And finally—IT IS FINISHED!! With eagerness we join you laymen in awaiting May. What? You mean it's time to start on 1971?? No rest for the weary. And then there was Miss Compton, keeping us to- gether, pushing us to meet those deadlines, helping us crop pictures, and just being there when we needed her. THANKS!!! Who is this? I don't know. Who is this? Questions such as these were bantered around the room when the individual class pictures came back. Class editors were Jolene Heaton—8th grade, Annette Reed—9th grade, Gail Spears— 10th grade, Karol Klotal—11th grade, and Gay Holbrook—12th grade. 141 ,0 present to tn as they h, ,5 QfOWth tO £' SV Coverage ot Associate ind.Hfceir .J0 minute; lne typed.’ [ready?” Vl y oid f book.” |n you hav ch J WH$ ««SPEttV 1 l,ng never orrowing his 'ng him c c°nunort hoi K.,hyA i on,CIUb Editor t’U be in j m all day.” we°6se t ; m scared ♦ Alice Brown- Con plimei — ikbeil — Exchangc feitor advisor ___iwcrODiT' irtha Johnson, Di ftUA cen t nr Kathy Atkinson—President, Susan Morris—Vice-President Eleanor Sewell—Treasurer, Deborah Williams—Secretary, Debbie Cantrell—Projects Chairman, Barbara Owens—Publicity Chairman, Nancy Fowler—Chaplain.
