Hart County High School Hartwell, Georgia Ann Spears, Editor MEMOIR Dedication We dedicate the 1969 Memoir to: Miss Betty Thrasher You have guided us unselfishly with wisdom and kindness, teaching us to use our talents to better ourselves. Your dependability and interests in school activities have led us to admire you. Your determination, sincerity, and concern for students have won you a place in the heart of every H. C. H. S. student. It is in love, admiration, and appreciation that we dedicate the 1969 Memoir to you—Miss Betty Thrasher. 3 Foreword In this year's Memoir we have tried to capture some of the melodious moments of your 1968-1969 school year. Through this book we hope to have made it possible for you to hear, and also see, the Symphony of Hart County High School. As the Seniors graduate they will take a big step into tomorrow, but these yesterdays will never be forgotten. In years to come as they turn the pages of this Memoir they will remember those days—good and bad—and will hear the Symphony of Hart County High School ring in their ears again. To the rest of the student body this Memoir will hold treasured moments of some unforgettable times of a year among other years as they were striving toward one goal: graduation. To the teachers and other leaders of our school we hope this Memoir will add to your collection of wonderful memories of your work, of students you have taught and helped, and of your wonderful friends at Hart County High. The jangle of bells, the slam of doors, the roar of talk and laughter, the rustle of whispers, the silence of thoughts, the screams of victory, the frustration of defeat, the ache of longing, the cry of heartbreak, the smiles of friendship, the looks of questions, the weariness of toil, the monotony of boredom, the satisfaction of accom- plishment, the dream of fulfillment, the resentment of restriction, the ever-growing, ever-expanding of the indi- vidual shape the notes of the movements of ones symphony. This symphony is different to the ears of each stu- dent. Each is the conductor of his own private orchestra. The crescendos and diminuendos are arranged by you. The beat and mood move to the pace of your demands—jazz, soul, psychedelic, popular, classical, semi-classical. You decide to be a listener or a member of the band. You may step to the music or idly drift with the melody. But for now, sing along with us . . . The 1969 Memoir staff expresses its sincere appre- ciation to our photographer, Billy Moorhead. We often gave him a rough time, but he understood our inexpe- rience and ignorance and gave us his best. We are grateful for his unending patience, his un- wavering dependability, his invaluable advice, his calm assistance, his rapid production, and his incomparable photography. Of those extras he gave, we are aware. Without him there would be no Memoir. Thank you, Billy. 4 Billy Moorhead Table of Contents Administration 10 Activities 22 Features 64 Sports 88 Classes 120 Advertisements 184 5 6 crmc Mr. C. B. Davis, Jr. Principal Sincerely yours, C. These people are in charge of one specific part of the school. Their duty is to see that this part functions at its best. They stay behind the eight ball. We would now like to express our appreciation for all of their accomplishments. Mrs. Marilene Basinger Chorus Director Mrs. Mary Bailey Assistant Librarian Mrs. Virginia Russell Secretary Miss Annie Belle Ayers Librarian 14 Language Department The Language Department endeavors to help each student become aware of the language he uses daily and to recognize it as a living, growing, changing one. It attempts to train the student to produce his thoughts and emotions in a logical, gram- matically acceptable form, thereby causing him to become more proficient in the writing skills because he has become more proficient in his speaking abilities. This department also strives to expose the students to the great ideas of life which are important to his cultural heritage through reading and listen- ing experiences. We believe that a sequential program of study which is based on the best thinking of not only traditionalists but also modern linguists should produce literate adults who use the four aforementioned language skills with competence and under- standing. The Hi-Life records the news and is presented month- ly. The editorial section ex- presses the views of staff members as well as those of the HCHS students. The fea- ture section covers the light- er side of campus life, giv- ing advice to students and featuring entertaining articles, comments, and drawings. The news page is devoted to mak- ing the students aware of im- portant events at HCHS. The sports page gives the low- down on all HCHS sports. A lot of hectic work goes into the make-up of the pap- er. The most important event involving the entire school is the distribution of yearbooks. This .year the Memoir staff has attempted to compose the chords and discords of HCHS life into a harmonious symphony of memories for you. Mr. Jonson has worked diligently with the band members to make our band one of the best in the state. September 6, 1968 was a big night for band members, parents, boosters, and Mr. Jonson as they shared a feeling of pride when the band made their first public ap- pearance in completely new uniforms. Each member of the band, community organiza- tions, industries, businesses, and individuals faithfully supported the uniform drive, and in just nine months the entire amount of $7,000 had been raised and the uniforms delivered.—A job well done!! Besides the great football half-time shows, the band presents concerts for the public and student body. Practices are held every day during sixth period and extra practices after school for the football games, parades, festivals, and other trips. The play cast traveled to Cov- ington to present Hart County's play in com- petition January 9, 1969. Eight schools were represented at Covington. The play presented was Childhood by Thornton Wilder. It is a delightful comedy concerning the way which children and parents misunderstand each other. The only properties used in the play were six stools' which ranged in use from bushes to church pews to bus seats to a coffin. There were five characters: three children, a mother and a father. Students in the play were Fred Wilson, Wayne Parker, Elaine Gor- don, Sally Johnson, David Seawright and Linda Callis. Trabue Bryans and Flip Fisher were stagehands and Mrs. Ellen O'Neal directed the play. 48 French Club President—Ranny Adams Vice-President—Marcia Barton Secretary—Janet Brock Treasurer—Debbie Miller Faite tu du Fran$ is? Astronauts circled the earth for 14 days; others headed for the moon. Outer space is losing its strangeness and becoming the commonplace to scientists. Star-gazers and lovers still view the heavens with a dazzled, mystical eye, however. As members of this ever-shrinking universe, the Class of 70 served as hosts to the Class of 69 in a tour of the planets. Leaving Earth far behind, the space venturers rocketed away for a night among the stars. 156 Phil Wilson Lorry Winslett Shelia Wood Patsy Wood Kenneth Younes Not Shown Danny Alewine Danny Cheelc Wayne Cleveland Danny Graham Ray McGill Jimmy Moore Eddy Moorhead John Mouchet Ronny Mouchet Randall O’Barr Richard Osley David Ray Larry Risner Diane Whiting Isn't that a no. no. boys? Soon some of us will be far from our homes and our familiar sur- roundings. Then after having assumed our place in the world, we will, as voyagers having crossed an unknown sea, sit back and think of all that has occurred. We will muse over the history which we made at Hart County High by our very presence, the things we saw during our four years of high school: the people we met, the ideas we formed, the spirit that is HART COUNTY HIGH—the very place where basic formations of character were nurtured. But the future awaits us ... MOORHEAD, Owner Affiliated With Pacer Record Camera Center Editor’s Note We hope, through the 1969 Memoir, that we have preserved some of the mem- ories that will be cherished in years to come. Through many hours of hectic work we have tried to capture some of the every- day moments that make up the exciting, amusing, and fun-filled days at ole' Hart County High School. Along with these moments we have also tried to capture some of the sad, tearful, and let-down days. As life goes on, and these moments become yesterdays, we hope you will be able to remember our Alma Mater and say, Those were the'unforgettable days' of Hart County High School.
