RUBY NELL BANNISTER Language Department English students study grammar, literature, and the history of human thought and philosophy. They find that it is becoming increasingly important to be able to speak and write their own language effectively and accurately. To the English Department we owe our ap- preciation and understanding of the English language. Through this department, our outlook on the cultural side of life has been greatly increased. We also reap the benefits of practice in writing which stimulates an inner desire to be creative. With hard work and the added benefit of a lan- guage lab, the students are mastering new sounds and new grammar. Vocabularies, sentence structure, and especially the study of customs and culture all help make foreign languages alive for today and for the future. Miss Mize prepares for her art class. She is also one of our English teachers. He thinks I didn't see that rubber band sailing across the room, just wait 'til he gets his report card. I'll teach him. I could swear that page was in here yesterdayl MISS JANET TAYLOR 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-0 Blast OFFIIIIIII! MISS DIANE MIZE Science Department The Science Department of HCHS works to build a sound basis of fun- damental principles, theories, and con- cepts so necessary to the understand- ing of biology, chemistry, physics, and general and physical science. Students explore the secrets of life and the world in which they live to be able to take their places in the scientific age of today. Through the efforts of this department. Hart Coun- ty High students have received high awards in the State Science Fair and have graduated to continue their studies in the field of science. Mrs. Bush and some of her students constructed a model of the solar system and dis- played it in her classroom. MRS. ROSE BUSH 14 MRS. BETTY GRIGGS MRS. ANNA HILL Honest, Mrs. Hill, I did my homework. It's gotta be in here somewhere. I'm sure I did it, I think! MRS. BONNIE MILFORD MR. CALVIN PHILLIPS I gather from the data we have accumulated, Dale, that the success of this experiment is a little doubtful now. Mrs. Milford, who teaches general biology, explains the process of cell division to her second period class. Math Department Math teaches one to think. It is a nec- essary part of the education of every stu- dent at HCHS. It teaches him how to think effectively and organize his ideas. Learning to solve problems and become familiar with numbers is also necessary preparation for higher education and the scientific apd practical world of today. Students obtain this preparation through such courses as general math, algebra, geometry, business math, and trigonom- etry, and through the efforts of well trained teachers. There's no use running now, Mr. Dendy, the bell rang three minutes ago. Would you believe this beautiful cake is a sham? Later, the faculty member responsible produced a real cake in honor of Mr. Brown's birthday. 16 MR. HOKE HILL MRS. HELEN DENDY MR. TOM JONES Then you subtract the remainder from the quotient and add that to the difference, then combine the product and the sum and round it off to the nearest million. Actually, it's very simple. Mrs. Dendy explains some fundamentals of algebra to her second period advanced(?) algebra class. Let's see now, two plus three equals five and three plus two equals seven. Something's gotta be wrong! 17 Vocational Department Within the vocational department of HCHS the business students strive for top speed and efficiency in business pro- cedures. Shorthand, bookkeeping, and typing give students skills which enable them to make a living in the competitive business world of today. In the home economics classes, homemaking tech- niques prepare girls for the future. They learn something that can be put to im- mediate use. Manual training yields use- ful products in shop classes. Mrs. Dickerson serves in a dual role at HCHS. Sh teaches typing and acts as counselor for students MR. BOBBY BROWN MRS. BARBARA COBB Actually, Carolyn, the machine works better and you get more accurate results if you plug it in before you start. Athletic Department Through athletics the instructors seek to improve coordination and promote sports- manship in the students. The general rules of volleyball, basketball, and many other such games are taught so that students can learn teamwork. The Hart County High coaching staff has rendered countless services to our school. They each participate in coaching a team and also teach additional classes. Besides training the students athletically, they help build character by promoting honor, good sportsmanship, and fair play. The coaches have given so much of their time and effort to make our teams ex- cel in sports. Oh boy, I can tell ft's gonna' be one of 'those' days. MRS. SANDRA BROWN Coach Moore is one of the few people who can sleep while in a standing position. 20 Mrs. Brown relaxes between her eighth grade physical education classes. Social Studies Department In the Social Studies Department at HCHS the student builds his understanding of the United States government, its relation to the world affairs, and the herit- age on which our country was built. It also gives the students the opportunity to learn of other nations and current events of today. Planning, discussions, testing, and projects are all part of a course in social studies. Furthering the student's knowledge of governmental structure and the history of the United States is the most important goal of the social studies department. This instruction will be valuable to the seniors as they graduate, feeling the re- sponsibility of being citizens. 'Okay, you duds. :ront and center.' Aw c'mon now, boys. Linda Buffington and Peggy Bowers supervised the advertising campaign for the Memoir. The staff gives impressions of the HCHS students throughout the year in pictures and words through the 1966 Memoir Each person serves in a dual capacity on the Publications Staff, with a job on the Memoir Staff and a job on the Hi-Life Staff Nancy West, Vicki Cleveland, Larry Tor- rence Cheryl Dooley, Bob Adams drew-up layouts and pictures of the Activities of HCHS. Members of the Classes Section review last year's Memoir in planning for the 1966 Memoir. These people are: Standing, Judy Brown, Alice Skelton, Eletrice Alewine, Peggy Bowers, Rose Cheek, Susan Morris, Jo Ann Pfaender, Seated: Connie Minish, Linda Buffington and Billie Clyde Magoon. Senior class president. Bob Adams, checks magazine sales. This year, for the first time, the Memoir Staff profited from the sales. Donna Jersey, Jean Fleming, and Janis Dean look at a beauty review picture which is one of the HCHS Features. 27 Linda Buffington is the Editor of the Hi-Life. The Sports Page gives the lowdown on all HCHS sports and carries a special sports column. Members are Sue Stout, Bob Adams and Larry Torrence. The Editorial section expresses the views of staff mem- bers as well as those of the HCHS student. These people are Linda Buffington, Susan Morris and Cheryl Dooley. Vickie Cleveland, Nancy West, Eletrice Alewine, and Peggy Bowers of the Feature Sec- tion give advice to students and feature many entertaining articles. The News Page is devoted to making the students aware of important events at HCHS. Those working on this page are Standing: Beth Dumesnil, Sue Ban- nister, Janis Dean. Seated: Donna Jersey and Billie Clyde Magoon. The Business Staff of the Hi-Life has the difficult job of selling ads and handling finances. The members of the staff are: Standing, Alice Skelton, Judy Brown, Rose Cheek, Jo Ann Pfaender. Seated: Connie Minish, John White, Vicki Dalton. Mrs. Adams who handles the hectic job of adviser to both publications looks on as Make-up Editors John White, Linda Buffinton, and Carol Hol- brook plan a page for the Hi-Life. Jean Fleming is the Hi-Life Exchange Editor and Donna Jersey serves as Art Editor for the Hi-Life. Susan Morris, a Hi-Life staff member, is shown selling programs at an HCHS foot- ball game. John White serves as Business Manager of the Hi-Life. DEBATE H.C.H.S. TEAMS THE SUBJECT: RESOLVED: That the Federal Government Should Prohibit Industry-wide Bargaining. The Varsity debaters were Sub-Region Champions, defeating Elberton and Stephens counties in a 6-0 decision. H.C.H.S. placed second in Region competition after losing to Chamblee in a 6-0 decision. Debaters also participated in the Barkley Forum at Emory University and the Invitational Debate Tourna- ment at the University of Georgia. Varsity Affirmative Debaters are L.-R.: Bill Glenn and Walter Gordon. Varsity Negative Debaters are L.-R.: David Luthi and Travis Parker. 30 Members of '65-'66 Debate team Are: L.-R. First Row, Mrs. Vickery—Advisor and Coach, Susan Broadwell, Judy Senkbeil, Second Row, Earl Johnson, Wayne Bannister, Lynn Morris, and Mike Moorehead. MINOR MIRACLE One-Act Play Wins Second in Region Shown with Mrs. Ellen O'Neal, director, are her stage assistants: Mike O'Neal, Randy Dumesnil, Woody Matthews, and Mike Brown. The cast includes: Walter Gordon, Dana Feltman, Buck Chapman, Van Duncan Minor Miracle is the story of four ship-wrecked sailors stranded on a raft for sixteen days. They strug- gle to survive not only phys- ically, but mentally and spiritually also. The Beta Club promotes lead- ership and good scholarship throughout HCHS. To maintain membership in the club, sopho- mores must have an over-all average of 92; juniors, 91; and seniors, 90. Their projects for the 1965-66 year included post- ing the Honor Roll each six weeks, sponsoring Honors Day, sponsoring a candidate for state vice-president, and award- ing a $100 scholarship-loan to a member.
