TEACHER OF THE YEAR Hart County and also Tenth District MR. PETE HERNDON Chosen by the unonimous vote of the HCHS faculty. Selected throughout the state with enthusiasm and interest. The parents and the Church can and must teach our children the moral aspects of life, but teaching outside these realms must be done in the schools and must be done by professional teachers—men and women who are trained to do the job and devoted to the effort of teaching. No business can long exist without competent people to work for it and to manage it. Unless there is a steady supply of such people available within our state, our businesses will dry up and die, or they will import people to do the jobs in which our people fail for the lack of education, and our people will be forced to do the bidding of those who rule them economically. The purpose of the Teacher of the Year program is to tell the people of this state—all of them—what the school teacher means to each of us and to each of our children. All the money in the world poured into brick and mortar will not create an educational system, and one can never be created until there is a competent, well-trained, loyal, and devoted teacher-body to put life, spirit, and heart into it. It is not enough that a teacher be technically competent to teach English, arithmetic, or reading. In- deed, this competence is but the foundation on which the whole structure of teaching must be built. A teacher must have many qualities of character and ability which go far beyond the technical competence to teach, and it is in this area that we have laid stress. Smith, President, The First National Bank of Atlanta; and Chairman, Education Com- mittee of the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce. Page Six Atlanta, Georgia March 28, 1957
