THE 1958 MEMOIR HART COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL HARTWELL, GEORGIA MR. E. C. MARTIN, PRINCIPAL Table Of Contents The School year 1957-58 has carried us through the second year of marked changes and rapid de- velopment in Hart County's educational system. During the past two years there have been count- less adjustments to be made, an endless flow of challenging problems to soIvq, and the same old decisions to make. This development has been a challenge to the teachers and students at Hart County High School—a challenge that is resulting in a superior school plant. We proudly offer this MEMOIR to you with the hope that your fondest high school memories will be kept alive, through the years, by the people, scenes, and situations found between its covers. Every five years each high school in the state of Georgia is visited by an Evaluation Committee for the Southern Associa- tion of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Below ore excerpts from the report that this committee submitted to Mr. Martin: COMMENDATIONS: The Committee was very much impressed by the high morale of students, teachers and lay people and the mutual respect shown between these groups. When a group of selected students were asked to state what they believed to be the outstanding feature of the school, they immediately replied, 'The interest the principal and teachers have in us as students.' This speaks well for the entire staff. The principal, and the principals of the elementary schools within the county, are to be recommended for their guidance of eighth grade students prior to entrance m high school. The pre- registration of eighth grade students in their respective schools appears to be an effective step in the overall guidance of stu- dents os well os making for efficiency in organization of the high school. Housekeeping was excellent. This indicates a high degree of cooperation between custodians, staff, and students as well as pride in a beautiful building. RECOMMENDATIONS: A combination gymnasium-auditorium is essential to the type program that the boys and girls of Hart County deserve. Also the progrom is curtailed to a certain extent by limited facili- ties; for example, in physical education and in homemaking education. Although excellent facilities are provided in home- making education, these facilities would have to be doubled to provide for student needs in this phase of the educational pro- gram. Enrichment of the school program means the employment of additional staff members. This, in turn, means that if the school is to remain on the accredited list of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the local administration must try to provide teachers beyond the state allotment. The Committee strongly recommends that a full-time secretary be employed for the school. EVALUATION DAY LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. J. M. Jarrard, Area Representative, State Dept, of Education; Mr. W. Cleveland, County School Superintendent; Mrs. Frances Skelton, Instructional Supervisor. TEACHER OF THE YEAR Hart County and also Tenth District MR. PETE HERNDON Chosen by the unonimous vote of the HCHS faculty. Selected throughout the state with enthusiasm and interest. The parents and the Church can and must teach our children the moral aspects of life, but teaching outside these realms must be done in the schools and must be done by professional teachers—men and women who are trained to do the job and devoted to the effort of teaching. No business can long exist without competent people to work for it and to manage it. Unless there is a steady supply of such people available within our state, our businesses will dry up and die, or they will import people to do the jobs in which our people fail for the lack of education, and our people will be forced to do the bidding of those who rule them economically. The purpose of the Teacher of the Year program is to tell the people of this state—all of them—what the school teacher means to each of us and to each of our children. All the money in the world poured into brick and mortar will not create an educational system, and one can never be created until there is a competent, well-trained, loyal, and devoted teacher-body to put life, spirit, and heart into it. It is not enough that a teacher be technically competent to teach English, arithmetic, or reading. In- deed, this competence is but the foundation on which the whole structure of teaching must be built. A teacher must have many qualities of character and ability which go far beyond the technical competence to teach, and it is in this area that we have laid stress. From on address commemorating the presentation of the Teacher of the Year Award for 1957 by Edward D. Smith, President, The First National Bank of Atlanta; and Chairman, Education Com- mittee of the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce. Page Six Atlanta, Georgia March 28, 1957 FACULTY MRS.
