Helping at Caracas Social Center Coffee break CIVIC ACTICN The Civic Action program was our way of lending a hand to our South American neigh- bors. When hospitals, orphanages, or schools needed carpentry, plumbing, or repair work, volunteers for Civic Action projects were always there using Navy ingenuity to get the job done. Ships have technical problems, too, and the various navies passed around their knowledge and resources. YARNELL crewmembers donated nearly 700 man hours to Civic Action projects during UNITAS XI. Operation Handclasp, part of the Navy's People to People program supplies the answer. YARNELL loaded 23 pellets of medical supplies for distribution to schools, orphanages, and hospitals where they are needed. Private corporations donate such items as medical or school supplies for 'distribution by government agencies, including the Navy. YARNELL sailors volunteered , to help transport, unload, and distribute the supplies in different South American ports.
