Manning the rail for VIP demonstration HONORS an CEREMONIES Not only were we sailors and sightseers, but also diplomats. In every foreign country we visit- ed high government officials visited our ship in port or witnessed firepower demonstrations at sea. On these occasions diplomatic protocol was the order of the day. Glistening brass, flash. ing swords, and snappy rifle drills marked the superb performance of our honor guard which welcomed generals, govenors and diplomats to our ship. When entering ports, we 'cmanned the raila' and fired 21 gun national salutes to honor each nation we visited. At a moment's notice, our honors OOD,s, honors boatswain's mate, sideboys and gunner's mate were ready with a traditional military welcome for our South American friends.
