ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS Saint Thomas is the second largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The island was dis- covered in 1493 by Columbus and subse- quently held by the Dutch, the Danes, and the English before the United States ac- quired it in 1917. The basis of itls economy is cattle raising, rum, and tourism. Its capital, Charlotte Amalie, was our port of call. By the time we left St. Thomas we had loaded a magazine with several hundred gal- lons of goodies.
