Yarnell enters Cartegena CARTAGENA, COLUMBIA Cartegena was founded in' 1533 near a fortress on the shores of a protected harbor. During the colonial period, it became one of the chief ports of Colonial Spanish America. The city has many fine examples of Spanish architecture such as its cathedral fbegun in 1538j, the church and monastery of San Pedro, the Palace of the Inquisition, La Popa Castle, and the Universidad de Cartagena. With so much to see, the camera bugs were kept busy. Cartagena is also gaining in popularity as a resort, many of us found time to relax on the fine Caribbean beaches or try our luck in the gambling casinos. Car- tagena was our last stop in South America before turning north toward home. . ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS Saint Thomas is the second largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The island was dis- covered in 1493 by Columbus and subse- quently held by the Dutch, the Danes, and the English before the United States ac- quired it in 1917. The basis of itls economy is cattle raising, rum, and tourism. Its capital, Charlotte Amalie, was our port of call. By the time we left St. Thomas we had loaded a magazine with several hundred gal- lons of goodies.
