PANAMA CITY Because it is at one end of the Panama Canal, Panama City is truly the 6'Crossroads of the World. Low duties and taxes make it a shoppers paradise. Our international bargain 'hun- ters especially stocked up on camera and stereo gear. Panama City was an important city on the Old Spanish Main, so sightseers did not have to look for things to do. Old Panama was burned by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671g the gaunt ruins of the old city are mute testimony to those exciting days. Cutting a 10 mile wide swath across the isthmus adjacent to Panama City is the Panama Canal Zone, a US territory with free access to Panamanians. After more than three months away, we felt very much at home at the US Naval Base, Rodman, truly a Little America. Do you think he's double jointed? THE PANAMA CANAL Our transit of the Panama Canal consisted of an eight hour, 47 mile transcontinental journey by ship, during which YARNELL went through three series of locks from sea level to 56 feet above sea level and down again. In the process, we even crossed a fresh water lake! The Panama Canal Company furnished a guide who used our loudspeaker system to thoroughly explain the history and operation of the Canal.
