LIMA and CALLO, PERU Peru is the land of the Andes and the Inca culture, our visit to the national capital of Lima was a high point on the cruise. Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru as well as the administrative, com- mercial, cultural, and transportation heart of the country. More than 400 years old, Lima has preserved her colonial heritage remark- ably well. The narrow streets of the city are lined twith Spanish-Moorish buildings over 250 years old. The city is also famous for its striking cathedrals. Lima has a Mod- ern face too, one of excellent shops and restaurants. The most popular souvenir items were llama and alpaca rugs and jewehy. For history buffs tours were available to the Pachaczfmac ruins and the city's fab- ulous museums. The country club set spent their time at El Basque Country Club relax- ing and enjoying life. PANAMA CITY Because it is at one end of the Panama Canal, Panama City is truly the 6'Crossroads of the World. Low duties and taxes make it a shoppers paradise. Our international bargain 'hun- ters especially stocked up on camera and stereo gear. Panama City was an important city on the Old Spanish Main, so sightseers did not have to look for things to do. Old Panama was burned by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671g the gaunt ruins of the old city are mute testimony to those exciting days. Cutting a 10 mile wide swath across the isthmus adjacent to Panama City is the Panama Canal Zone, a US territory with free access to Panamanians. After more than three months away, we felt very much at home at the US Naval Base, Rodman, truly a Little America. Do you think he's double jointed?
