Masters of the English Narrows: Capt. Bowen, Chilean Pilot, LTJG,'s LaMarche, Both, and Blanchard. MAGELLAN STRAITS and CHILEAN WATERWAY I Following our departure from Comodoro Rivadavia the Unitas ships steamed through the Straits of Magellan following the route the Spanish explorer had taken 400 years earlier. On the island of Tierre Del Fuego the natural fires of burning gas were plainly visible. After transiting the Straits the four ships made the long-awaited turn to the north and headed up the Chilean coast via the inland waterway. The striking scenery included tower- ing mountains with snow, glaciers, and even penguins, The tortuous English Narrows were the highlight of the trip. Our own special navigation teams and two Chilean navy pilots made the difficult trip easy. Off the coast below majestic Mt.
