SAN JUAN San Juan was founded in 1521 and was originally called Puerto Rico C rich portnj By Juan de Leon. The older portions of the city were built on the rocky islets that enclose San Juan Bay. Most impressive is the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, which has guarded the entrance of San Juan Bay since 1586. The modern industrial develop- ment, known as 6'Operation Bootstrapw, has brought to San Juan since 1939 many new plants to produce cement, clothing, pharmaceuticals, metal prod- ucts, and electrical goods. When not relaxing on the beach or in San Juan's many restaurants and plush gambling casinos, we welcomed the COMSOLANT Staff aboard. We also had our first chance to meet our counter- parts from South American navies in receptions held eith the Colombians and Venezuelans. LA GUAIRA and CARACAS, VENEZUELA Caracas is the capital and largest city of the Repub- lic of Venezuela. It is connected with its port La Guaira by rail and by a 12 mile super highway completed in 1953. The -center of the city is the Plaza Bolivar, on the east side of which is the Cathedral. Other historic buildings include Casa Bolivar, birthplaceof Simon Bolivar, and the Church of San Francisco dating from the colonial period. Few colonial houses and buildings have survived, many having been destroyed in the earth- quakes of 1812 and 1900. With its high rise apartments and freeway network, the city is reminiscent of Los Ange- les, but without 0 the. smog. La GuairafCaracas he d the distinction of being nin if. first stop in South America. f X' fy- 1 The highlights of the visit - for most of us was the cable car ride down to Caracas from the top of Humboldt Mountain over 6000 feet high. , .
