ANDERSON USCOMSOLANT Rear Admiral Herbert H. Anderson, Commander U.S. South Atlantic Forces, termed Unitas XI Ha highlight of my thirty years service in the United States Navy. On numerous occasions Admiral Anderson praised the outstanding support provided by Yarnell during the hectic at-sea training and inport periods of Unitas XI. The praise was not to be taken lightly as Admiral Anderson has had several flagships before Yarnell. Most recently he was commander of the Cruiser-Destroyer Group Seventh Fleet, the Surface Action Group Attack Striking Force and the Naval Gunfire Support Forces in South Vietnam. During Unitas XI Admiral Anderson hosted dozens of high ranking military and civilian personages aboard the flagship, as well as conducting press conferences for over 200 media representatives. At sea he commanded the com- bined task force of United States ,and South American naval units, relying on Yarnell's communications and Combat Information Center facilities. To the officers and men of Yarnell he offers: Many thanks for consistently outstanding performance. Your contribution measureably added to the success of Unitas XI in promoting understanding among Americans of both continents . ' ' 4 CAPTAIN ALAN J. KAYE CHIEF OF STAFF Unitas XI was Captain Alan Kaye's third Unitas operation. As Chief of Staff for COMSOLANT, Captain Kaye was a central figure in all of the at sea and inport activities of Unitas XI. Speaking fluent Spanish and Portuguese, Captain Kaye has had several assignments in his twenty-eight year naval career which have involved him in Latin American affairs. In 1958 and 1959 he served as Sub-Chief of the U.S. Naval Mission in the Dominican Republic. From 1962 to 1964 he was Special Assistant to the Director of Pan American Affairs and between 1967 and 1968 he attended the Inter-American Defense College at Washington, D. C. This intimate knowledge of South America was a unique asset to the COMSOLANT staff in their continuing involvement with the navies of South America. af! or v - ' CAPTAIN ALVA M. OC DIVISION Hamill RMC The men of OC manned the communication centers of the ship - open 24 hours a day, 8 days a week. They suffered port and starboard and banishment to the staff. But service went on as usual, with all types of communications made available to Yarnell. The Radiomen manned their CW, teletype, on- line and off-line crypto, voice circuits, ship-ship and ship-shore termination, while battling bow-stub antennas, working parties, rigging parties, med lights, and painting out the stacks. The signalmen operated flashing lights, semaphore, and flaghoist, battling the sun off San Juan, showers off Chile, tourists on the signal bridge inport, and mad-dogs ashore. But OC Division made time for even more. RM1 Hollingsworth placed 1000 phone patches for the crew on Yarnell's ham radio station, WBQBDH. SAN JUAN San Juan was founded in 1521 and was originally called Puerto Rico C rich portnj By Juan de Leon. The older portions of the city were built on the rocky islets that enclose San Juan Bay. Most impressive is the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, which has guarded the entrance of San Juan Bay since 1586. The modern industrial develop- ment, known as 6'Operation Bootstrapw, has brought to San Juan since 1939 many new plants to produce cement, clothing, pharmaceuticals, metal prod- ucts, and electrical goods. Tha city is spectacular because of its site and many colorful buildings and houses. Many of the 17th and 18th century churches here represent the best of Portuguese - Brazilian baroque architecture. Salvador prospered as the political and commercial center of early Brazil and today reflects much of this early glamour. Salvadoris life has also been in- fluenced by Africag the Bahian food is very different from the rest of Brazilis because of its unique blend of Spanish and African influences. MAGELLAN STRAITS and CHILEAN WATERWAY I Following our departure from Comodoro Rivadavia the Unitas ships steamed through the Straits of Magellan following the route the Spanish explorer had taken 400 years earlier. On the island of Tierre Del Fuego the natural fires of burning gas were plainly visible. After transiting the Straits the four ships made the long-awaited turn to the north and headed up the Chilean coast via the inland waterway. The striking scenery included tower- ing mountains with snow, glaciers, and even penguins, The tortuous English Narrows were the highlight of the trip. Our own special navigation teams and two Chilean navy pilots made the difficult trip easy. Off the coast below majestic Mt.
