CAPTAIN GUY CHAMBERLIN LEAVITT Captain Guy Chamberlin LEAVITT was born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 12, 1920, the son of Captain and Mrs. Charles E. Leavitt, U. S. Navy lRetiredl. He entered the Naval Academy in 1939 and graduated with the class of 1943 on June 19, 1942. Newly commissioned Ensign LEAVITT reported to the USS NIELDS lDD-6161 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1943 he participated in the occupation of Sicily and, in 1944, the in- vasion of Southern France. During this tour of duty he was promoted to Lieutenant liunior gradel and Lieutenant, and, while' serving as Gunnery Officer of the NIELDS, was awarded the Commendation Ribbon and letter for services during the assault land- ings at Southern France in 1944. ln October 1945 Lieutenant LEAVl1T was assigned as Gunnery Officer to the fitting out and commissioning of the USS BROWNSON lDD-8681. During the last five months of duty in this ship he served as Executive Officer. His next assignment was as Assistant Operations Officer, Staff Commander De- stroyers, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. ln July 1947 Lieutenant LEAVl1T reported to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Annapolis, Maryland, for a course in Ordnance Engineering. He continued his postgraduate work at the University of California at Los Angeles lULCAl where he was awarded a degree of Master of Science in Applied Physics in June of 1950. Upon leaving postgraduate school, he reported as Air Defense Officer and Gunnery Officer of USS COLUMBUS lCA-741, Flagship of the Commander in Chief U. S. Naval Forces, Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, on duty 'in the Mediterranean. ln Septem- ber of 1951 he left the COLUMBUS to take command of the USS BASSETT lAPD-731, based at Little Creek, Virginia. ln 1953 he was transferred to shore duty at the U. S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory, White Oak, Silver Spring, Maryland. ln 1957, as a Commander, he took command of the USS FORREST SHERMAN IDD- 931l. After two years in command he returned to duty in the newly formed Bureau of Naval Weapons as Proiect Officer for ASW Research and Development. He was pro- moted to the rank of Captain on 1 July 1962. In 1963 he completed a one year course of instruction at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, D. C., and was ordered to duty as Chief of Staff to Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla TEN. On 6 June 1964 Captain LEAVIT1' assumed command of the USS HARRY E. YAR- NELL lDLG-171.
