COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Thomas M. McNicholas, Jr. Captain Thomas M. McNicholas, Jr., was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and received his commission in 1961 upon graduation from the Naval Acad- emy. Previous assignments at sea in- clude tours as Damage Control Assis- tant aboard the destroyer USS ALLEN M. SUMNER (DD692). Engineering Offi- cer on USS JONAS INGRAM (DD938), Comanding Officer of the ocean mine- sweeper USS DIRECT (MSO430), Ex- ecutive Officer of the guided missile cruiser USS WILLIAM H. STANDLEY (CG32), and Commanding Officer of the guided missile destroyer USS BAR- NEY (DDG6), the destroyer tenders USS PIEDMONT (AD17), and USS SHENANDOAH (AD44). Ashore, Captain McNicholas at- tended the U.S. Naval Destroyer School and the Command and Staff Course of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He has also served on the Leadership and Manage- ment Committee at the U.S. Naval Academy as an instructor, in the Bu- reau of Naval Personnel as the head of the Officer Recall and Release Branch, and in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Assistant Head of the Tactical Command and Control Systems Branch. Captain McNicholas attended graduate school at Rensse- laer Polytechnic Institute where he ear- ned a Master of Science degree in In- dustrial Management. Captain McNicholas is authorized to wear the following medals and awards: Meritorius Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Battle Efficiency Ribbon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He is married to the former Mary Jane Bailey of Baltimore, Maryland and they have two children. Amy and Tom in.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER Commander William H. Axelrod Commander William H. Axelrod was born in Neptune City. New Jersey and enlisted in the Navy in 1961. He was appointed to Warrant Officer rank in 1970 and received fiis commission in 1972. Previous assignments at sea in- clude tours in USS EPPING FOREST (MCS7). USS GUADALCANAL (LPH7). USS WAINWRIGHT(CG28). and as En- gineer Officer in USS GOLDSBOR- OUGH (DDG20) and Operations Officer in USS BIDDLE (CG34). Ashore, Commander Axelrod at- tended the Defense Language Insti- tute. Surface Warfare Department Head School and the Command and Staff Course of the U.S. Naval War Col- lege in Newport, Rhode Island. He has also served at the Naval Schools Com- mand, Norfolk, Virginia and a Person- nel Exchange Officer in the Hellenic Navy in Athens, Greece. Commander Axelrod attended graduate school at Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island where he earned a t l as- ter of Arts Degree in International Rela- tions. Commander Axelrod is authorized to wear the following medals and awards: Navy Commendation Medal (second award). Navy Unit Commen- dation, Battle Efficiency Ribbon. Good Conduct Award (second award). Navy Expiditionary Medal, Sea Service Med- al and Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. He is married to the former Kath- leen Theresa Kelly of Philadelphia. Pennsylvania. They have three chil- dren.
