Belgium Antwerp - A city in the European Kingdom of Belgium, and the capital of a Belgian province of the same name, Ant- werp iAntwerpen in Flemish, Anvers in French2 is situated on the Schelde River' 55 miles from the North Sea. Antwerp is one of the biggest seaports in the world ranking only after Rotterdam in the Neth- erlands and New York. The inhabitants of Antwerp generally speak the local Brabantain - Antwerp dialect of Dutch. Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands and by Dutch-speaking cul- tured Belgians, however, is taught in the schools and is gaining ground in econom- ic life. There were nearly 79,000 foreign- ers living in Antwerp by the early 7970's. The largest national group was the Dutch 145002, followed by Moroccans l17002, Spaniards f 76002, French 115002, Ger- mans f7002, and British, American and Israelis fabout 800 each2. As the city where Rubens, Van Dyck, and other famous artists were born, Ant- werp seeks to maintain its reputation as a cultural center. Among the city's muse- ums are the Rubens' House, the Museum Ridder Schmidt van Gelder tporcelain, paintings, and furniture2, the Steen, Na- tional Maritime Museum of Belgium, the Brewers House and the Museum Mayer van den Bergh. Many YARNELL sailors took advan- tage ofthe quality diamond retailers avail- able, an industry which has been synono- mous with Antwerp since the 76th cen- tury. . Tours were available to Amsterdam and France. The Naval Reserve Unit of Belgium played YARNELL in soccer and escorted our sailors throughout the city.
