It was the first Jewish state to be established in nearly 2000 years. Its creation represented a fulfill- ment of the historic national ideal of the Jewish people stemming from the traditional religious belief in Godfs promise of the land of israel to the people of Israel. Among the population are numbered hun- dreds of thousands of immigrants, many of them suvivors of Nazi persecution in Europe or victims of anti-Semitism elsewhere. ' The Israel Defense Forces IIDFJ is an inte- grated organization controlling land, sea, and air forces. A special force lNahalj combines military and agricultural training and also en- gages in the establishment of new defense set- tlements on the borders. Youth battalions lGadna'j deal with premilitary training of youth both in and out of school. There is compulsory military service for men between the ages of 18 and 29, and for women between the ages of 18 and 26,' Arabs, both Muslim and Christian are exempt. The period of service for conscript males is 30 months and for women is 24 months, after which men and childless women undergo regular service training until the ages of 55 and 34, respectively. The IDF includes a minorities unit in which Druze, Circassian, Bed- ouin, and Christian Arabs may serve. , The static defense of the country is based upon a regional defense system. The basic unit in the lDF is the brigade group. Any member of the brigade groups can be combined under the command of divisional grouping in time of war. The rank of ra v-alluf llieutenant generalj is held only by the chief of staff of the IDF He is the senior military authority commanding all armed forces and is appointed by the government on the recommendation of the minister of defense. The IDF is based essentially on the reserve service of the population, and thus continues to be sa popular militia rather than a professional army. Civilian-military relations are based on the complete subordination of the army to civil- ian control. 5 hr E4T1 f 1 X V as ..-., , .,-- .-.--1. 4,-.-.W --,mv vw- - N-' --' -'- -ww -f - - I -s' f' ' 'A V ' W0 ' ' ' ' 5 A I A V 1 ' -V ,ms N , A v ,.. ., -.. 7, - 1 1- .. v . .-. . 1. .s sv -A.-,mug-mz T' j qu',: 'Ag'-5'-.qgwg 7 -49: '91-193.
