This time honored tradition is believed to have originated with the ancient Roman sail- ors as a way of finding favor with Neptune, god of the sea. The ritual cleansing of slimy poliywogs transforms them into trusty Shell- backs. King Neptune and his Royal Court still preside over the festivities. On February 13, 1989, at 105 degrees 02.7 minutes East longitude, approximately 300 crewmembers took part in the Crossing The Line ceremony, earning forever the rights, privileges, and honor of being a Shellback.
