Penang, Malaysia Penang Island lies off the west coast of the Malay Peninsula in the Straits of Malacca. It ' s principal city, Georgetown, was founded by the British in 1789. Georgetown is Malaysia ' s lead- ing port and second largest city, after Kuala Lumpur. Malaysians, Chinese, and Indians make up most of the population. Beautiful weather, inexpensive beach ho- tels, and interesting tours gave the crew ample opportunities for fun and relaxation during our final port visit before entering the Persian Gulf.
