The big hand gives one jerk and aligns exactly between the one and the two. A shrill ring echoes through the halls, doors swing open, and the hall bursts with life. Ecstatic with new- found freedom, teenagers of all shapes, sizes and colors storm out of the buildings that hold them captive for six and a-half agonizing hours. I stand observing a miniature rush hour. Voices, loud and soft, mingle into one steady rumble. Lockers squeak open and bang shut. Bodies collide and mingle like busy ants in an ant hill. I watch in awe as gradually, with- in minutes, the hall becomes empty and void of students and noise. Five minutes later the last locker slams shut and the exit door frommthe five hundred hall opens and shuts for the last time. Turning to my own locker, I swallow a stubborn lump that re- fuses to leave my throat. l take all the year's trash and dump it into a greedy trash can already stuffed to the hilt with many other papers. My heavy sigh echoes through the hall and I de- cide to tour the campus . . . one last time. gggg g g At three-fifteen, no one is in sight, except a reluctant teacher and an invisible janitor. My des- tination is where I began, the one hundred hall. Pulling open the big orange door, I enter the hall full of shad- ows from the past. The hall is dark and cold, a symbol of the first year of high school. Watch out world! On second thought, watch out me! What had I gotten myself into?! Open campus, sports, rallies, clubs, yearbooks, and what the heck was Home- coming?lt may be funny now but back then it was simply confus- ing. Walking down the hall, I am amazed to find I actually remem- ber the locker I had three years ago. Recalling the combination, I quickly turn the dial one way then the other. It didn't open. I laugh, and the sound echoes down the empty hallway as I move on to my second year . . . the two hundred hall. More acquainted with my sur- roundings and a year older, I had decisions to make - about my fu- ture, as well as my present. My days are filled with a new free- dom, new friends, new exper- iences. I remember the Home- coming game we lost, the parties I attended, the Senior I had a crush on, the i982 graduation. Pioneer was the main hang out and Ms. Pac-Man was in. What I remember most about my Junior year is my decision to enter college, and the discovery of my writing ability. Those days consisted of innumerable hours in the library and yearbook class, cutting to go to the latest movies and the lightheaded idea that in just a summer's time I would be a Senior. The year end- ed with hugs and tears for the graduating Seniors. The three hundred hall was always my fa- vorite . . . I close the door after one last look at its shiny floor and brightly lit walls. With a shaky sigh, I walk back into the five hundred hall and the lump is back in my throat. Among all the other years, this one was the best. This last year I not only made lasting friends, I finally found myself, something so many people are still trying to achieve. Now, today, l'lI gra- duate. But l'm not worried. The journey up to this date was won- derful and if it has gone this well so far, the one ahead should be a b . reeze -Phantom Falcor
