An embodiment of mind. soul, and spirit emerging into a cloak of congruity. The distance is trivial and irrelevant for the end will most assuredly come. and time is, in essence, a means of reaching that terminus. The books of laws and etiquette can not forever deflect our meandering minds or suppress the voicing of our tenets as we journey forth. Reaching new heights and extending our journey elicits a fear of the unknownt a void which requires filling. Yet. again, we wish for the journey's end primarily on the basis of not knowing. not understanding, not wanting, and our minds return to mean- dering. But we shall journey forth, until we can journey no further, , e r -Toni Gibbs scared. scared. U.S. and I am not -Thoncho Saephan When we are young we discover new things everyday. whether it be mental or physical. As we grow older. the ,physical discoveries decrease and we learn to open our minds to an unending amount of mental and emotional find- ings. There will never be a time when there is nothing left to know. Life is a iourney. to learn and live until the time of death. lt is impossible to control this journey, for it is ever- lasting and never-ending. Onlywhen death is upon us will we know if our journey is finally over or if it continues on infinitely. -Lisa Mann 6 Journeys The everyday life of a student at Harry Ells is a journey that is filled not only with familiar sights. sounds and people. but also with the new and exciting experiences that school can offer. We do not travel alone though. there are always friends and companions along the way to share the triumphs and agontes. However, we are never without the opportunity to be alone and study quietly. or think. as that is a part of every students life. if gs s, sl T is Q ls? sei Q? ts 1 ...- ki --.e--- . .M K k mfw NN' x Q 6' it ,fi x il MA Xxx w S gg kt Q M SEQ . The pounding beat of the music and the pulsating glow of the lights cast a hypnotic spell over everyone who was there. A constantly moving and swaying mass of people covered the entire floor. D.J.s played one great song after another. The dance was one of the best ones many students had ever seen at Ells, and will not soon be forgotten by anyone who was there. Cheryl Medina and Jorge Padilla getting totally juiced. Antonio Pantoia and Conception Martinez with the Homecom ing Night Fever. An awe-struck group looks on, Everybody was jamming into the night! Stacey Gatison and Patty Gomez getting into the beat A wild group making the dance floor smoke. HOMECGMI G R LLY 'if I2 'Homecoming Rally VU-I! The crowd at the Homecoming Rally showed so much spirit that we could feel the bleachers under us vibrate as the entire gym erupted with wild yells and cheering. Every- body was real iuiced up and we could feel the energy in the air as the team charged in. The cheerleaders were just blurs of color as they danced and lead the audience into a frenzy of excitement. Confetti filled the air and everyone could tell that we were some- thing special this year and that nothing could stop the mighty Falcons. .lixfi Q4 LLS AND FLQATS t Musical Homecoming was the Freshman theme this ar. Balloons, streamers. and colorful banners covered the lls. ' 1 Underwater Fantasyuwas the Junior theme. The hall- f was decorated with pictures of undersea life: mer- ds. fish, whales. and sunken treasures. The winning Sophomore hall had the theme of Jungle Safari , Lots of ivy. stuffed animals, pictures of Tarzan, and other wild beasts decorated the walls. 1 The Senior hall reflected their theme Through the t Years , Symbols of the past two decades plus pictures of our projected future decorated the hallway. Halls And Floats I3 ' i983-S4 HOMECOMING 1 7 1 , i Once upon a time there were six beautiful maidens of royalty, who were cursed as children by a wick, ed Hornet from the kingdom of Alameda to become ordinary stu- dents of Harry Ells. But. the wick- ed Hornet didn't know that the curse had a ten year warranty. lt iust so happens that the curse was lifted on Homecoming Election Day when Freshmen Princess Lor- raine Vigil, Sophomore Princess Sandra Fernandez. Junior Princess Yolanda Duncan the Ladies-iw Waiting: Ind Runner-up Lupe Za- zueta. lst Runnereup Ester hsver. and the inaiestic Queen Theresa Daniels, were voted into Royal Homecoming positions. Once upon another time, six royal male children were kid- napped by a kindly old nursemaid. to protect them from the very same curse. Throughout their many travels, they were never told of their royal blood and they carried out their lives as run-of- theemill Harry Ells' students. What a shock they experienced on Elec- tion Day when they discovered their true identities. Freshman Prince: Joe Williams. Sophomore Prince: Mark Molinar. Junior Prince: Robert Moses, the honored knights: George Calligeros and Al- den Williams. and the iolly king Lu' ciano Caldera. who completed the Royal Homecoming Court. The Kingdom of Harry Ells de- cided to celebrate with a Royal Pa- rade. The Parade featured floats from the Senior and Sophomore Class, a band of the best musi- cians. and a car full of the loveliest town maidens. The Parade cli- maxed with the crowning of the King and Queen. Then the Royal Homecoming Court, seated in their motor- drawn carriages rode into the sun- set. For they would be guests of honor at the Ball held in the stately Ells Gym that nightt and live hap- pily ever after. THE END A www JW xhi I fn ,iii ,,. ffv y, m f W 1 Z , ff ff 1. Players from differ- ent cultures, brought together by an interna- tional sport, worked and practiced hard to help each other and to dedicate themselves in order to achieve their goal of winning the league championship. Fifteen McDon- aId's cheeseburger coupons and one yearbook donated by the Yearbook Staff were giv- en away in a drawing for all the people who participated in the American Smoke-Out Survey which was written by the Red Cross Club students. In this survey, we surprisingly found out that ISZ of the stu- dents at Ells began smoking at the age of six. The results from the survey were given to the National Cancer Society because their statistics, posters, flyers, but- tons and decals made the Smoke-Out an overwhelming success with many students participating in it. Using a very specialized technique involving three negatives and a complex chemical process. these bizarre and unusual ef- fects were produced. 43 Lisa Mitchell Student Art 65 4 The big hand gives one jerk and aligns exactly between the one and the two. A shrill ring echoes through the halls, doors swing open, and the hall bursts with life. Ecstatic with new- found freedom, teenagers of all shapes, sizes and colors storm out of the buildings that hold them captive for six and a-half agonizing hours. I stand observing a miniature rush hour. Voices, loud and soft, mingle into one steady rumble. Lockers squeak open and bang shut. Bodies collide and mingle like busy ants in an ant hill. I watch in awe as gradually, with- in minutes, the hall becomes empty and void of students and noise. Five minutes later the last locker slams shut and the exit door frommthe five hundred hall opens and shuts for the last time. Turning to my own locker, I swallow a stubborn lump that re- fuses to leave my throat. l take all the year's trash and dump it into a greedy trash can already stuffed to the hilt with many other papers. My heavy sigh echoes through the hall and I de- cide to tour the campus . . . one last time. gggg g g At three-fifteen, no one is in sight, except a reluctant teacher and an invisible janitor. My des- tination is where I began, the one hundred hall. Pulling open the big orange door, I enter the hall full of shad- ows from the past. The hall is dark and cold, a symbol of the first year of high school. Watch out world! On second thought, watch out me! What had I gotten myself into?! Open campus, sports, rallies, clubs, yearbooks, and what the heck was Home- coming?lt may be funny now but back then it was simply confus- ing. Walking down the hall, I am amazed to find I actually remem- ber the locker I had three years ago. Recalling the combination, I quickly turn the dial one way then the other. It didn't open. I laugh, and the sound echoes down the empty hallway as I move on to my second year . . . the two hundred hall. More acquainted with my sur- roundings and a year older, I had decisions to make - about my fu- ture, as well as my present. My days are filled with a new free- dom, new friends, new exper- iences. I remember the Home- coming game we lost, the parties I attended, the Senior I had a crush on, the i982 graduation. Pioneer was the main hang out and Ms. Pac-Man was in. What I remember most about my Junior year is my decision to enter college, and the discovery of my writing ability. Those days consisted of innumerable hours in the library and yearbook class, cutting to go to the latest movies and the lightheaded idea that in just a summer's time I would be a Senior. The year end- ed with hugs and tears for the graduating Seniors. The three hundred hall was always my fa- vorite . . . I close the door after one last look at its shiny floor and brightly lit walls. With a shaky sigh, I walk back into the five hundred hall and the lump is back in my throat. Among all the other years, this one was the best. This last year I not only made lasting friends, I finally found myself, something so many people are still trying to achieve. Now, today, l'lI gra- duate. But l'm not worried. The journey up to this date was won- derful and if it has gone this well so far, the one ahead should be a b . reeze -Phantom Falcor X' Q?
