class history The Class of '60 is sfeeped in memories. Many of fhe seniors have been af Ells since fhe sevenfh grade, as we were fhe lasf producf of Ells Junior High. The change fo a high school carried us fhrough as fhe fail end year affer year. Finally, we have reached fhe fop and we have a lof fo remember. The sevenfh grade was an orienfafion period in which we laid fhe foundafion of many friendships, sfudy habifs Ui. and likes or dislikes in feachers. We also culfivafed growing pride in our school and class. The eighfh grade found us asserfing our righfs in sfudenf governmenf. Wifh fhe adopfion of fhe Arficles Pro Tem, class officers were named. Elaine Mafyia was elecfed presidenf, Bill Smifh became vice presidenf, Linda Dofy was secrefary. Thaf year, girls fook sewing and cooking and fhe boys fook mefal and wood shop. We sfarfed af fhaf early dafe fo fhink abouf our fufure by signing up for college prep courses, business, sfafe college, efc. Many of us had our firsf experience wifh a foreign language. Thaf was fhe year of firsfs for fhe school: fhe opening of fhe sfudenf union, fhe firsf fypewrifing classes, pom-pon girls, Argus, and Eagle Eye, and fhe firsf sfeps foward becoming a high school. Our ninfh grade was fhe real beginning of class unify and inferesf. Pefe Scalia served as presidenf, Gerry Overaa was second in command, and Bonnie Wallace was secrefary. Frosh Fanfasy, a dance, was our firsf class acfivify. Thai' year fhe business wing was builf, our charfer for C.S.E. was granfed, we had Sfudenf Teacher Day, Casual Day, and lofs of new clubs. We were building a senior high. I958-finally we were sophomores! Thaf was fhe year of fhe firsf graduafing class and esfablishmenf of se-nior fradifions. A lof of us sfruggled wifh geomefry, biology, and fyping. Class elecfions found Barbara Norman presidenf, Arlene Burke veep, and Michele Garside secrefary. Arlene headed fhe commiffees for fhe Soph Hop - C'esf L'Amour - which was held March 2l. Thaf year we elecfed pom-pon girls and cheerleaders, had our firsf maioreffes, life members of C.S.E., and sfarfed fhe Slave Day fradifion. Thai' was fhe year we played varsify and placed fhird in NACAL foofball and fourfh in baskefball. Then we were iuniors. Thaf was fhe year! Bill Smifh was prexy, Teddy Ball was veep, and Helen McLaughlin was secrefary. Thaf was fhe year of parfy affer parfy, of new friendships, sfeadies, and class spirif. Wifh fhe appearance of fhe iunior boys' hafs and iunior girls' blouses, class fads and rivalries began. We sfarfed amassing money for our senior year. We gof fired of lisfening fo squabbles over fhe paper so we prinfed fhe REBEL. We sold programs af all fhe games. We had fhe Voodoo Jungle which was fhe mosf successful dance Ells has ever had. We raised money for our exchange sfudenf and had Thor Muller from Norway here af Ells fhaf year. We senf Pefe Scalia abroad. We fook Class SPOHSOI' P-w!Taf9l1e++a and MFS- Tafqllefla chemisfry lwhewll, U.S. Hisfory, and driver fraining lcrashll. We excelled in sporfs. We were all-cify champs in foofball f and NACAL co-champs in baskefball. We gave fhe biggesf and besf Junior Prom ever. Wifh Touch of Venus as fhe fheme, fhe April evenf was a combinafion of everybody's hard work, Mr. Targheffa's nervous breakdowns, and lofs of prayer! Seniors! lf was bofh sad and exhilarafing. We were no longer lower-classmen. We were approaching fhe end. Our year was crammed wifh acfivify! Firsf came 'rhe Senior Ganza laffer a summer of slavingl. Music, lyrics, dances, scripfs, and scenery were complefely original. lf was a huge success! We made 52,000 on Ocfober I5 and I6. Then we resfed. Buf nof for long! The idea sprang up for a senior fashion show wifh clofhes from Marlene's and Rogers'. The idea became realify on November I2, wifh Nancy Rogers and Nancy Cebull com- menfafing. We raised more money fhrough fhe show, fhe exhausfing rummage sale, and fhe spagheffi dinner lfollowing fhe Richmond gamel. We had fun in fhe meanfime wifh our senior parfy af fhe Turf Club on January 29. Then came fhe banquef on Sf. Pafrick's Day af fhe Gold Room of fhe Claremonf. We difched school May I2 and wenf fo fhe mysferious senior picnic. Finally, fhe senior ball! The audiforium was gorgeous, resplendenf wifh elaborafe decorafions. Then, a few days lafer, came graduafion nighf and fhe all-nighl' parfy af Confra Cosfa College. All's over buf fhe shoufing. Six years are gone and memories are all fhaf remain of a wonderful school and fhe Class of '60. relax af fhe senior parfy.
