Pete Scalia and 700 other American Field Service students debarked at Rotterdam on June 26. Pete travelled to Kempten in Southern Germany. After spend- ing half the summer in Kempten, Pete went to Bielefeld in the northern part of the country. Highlight of the summer was a four-day conference in Vlotho where Ger- man and American youth talked about common problems and experiences. Pete came back with one definite impres- sion. After having talked with Socialists, refugees from East Germany, and Berliners, Pete is convinced that com- munism thrives on democracy's complacency.
