DD-748 4,9 WESTPAC 1965-1966 126, 2 0 LTJG ALLYN EUR GESS CAIN 921 AUGUST 1941 23 SEPTEMBER 1965 Allyn Burgess Cain was born at Nassau City, New York, of Leslie Burgess Cain and Marjorie QMcPhetersy Cain. After living for some years in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Allyn at- tended the University of Oklahoma and was a member of the NROTC program He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1963 with a B A degree in International Relations. Upon receiving his commission as Ensign, United States Navy he was ordered to the USS HARRY E HUBBARD QDD 7485 After completion of Destroyer Engineering School in March 1964 ENS Cain assumed the position of Main Propulsion increased the readiness of HUBBARD as a unit of the SEVENTH FLEET. He assumed the duties of Engineering Officer on 1 October 1964 on HUBBARD LTJG Cain was Quallfied OOD QFD underway and a qualified CDO. He acted as OOD during multiship ASW evolutions and performed these assignments in an unerring manner. He demonstrated the sound judg- ment which is necessary for proficiency in shiphandling. The hours have been long and tedious the Working and living conditions something less than desirable but the rewards of the Job we accomplished are not measured in dollars and cents Our mission has been to support the Commander of the SEVENTH FLEET, and through him the President, in our national effort to stop the spread of communism and bring eventual peace to Southeast Asia. The contribution of HUBBARD may seem relatively insignificant, es- is the day to day effort of thousands of menlike those of us in HUBBARD that will bring ultimate success For many men especially those with families, a cruise of this na- ture involves considerable sacrifice At all levels of command, the con- tinued willingness of Navy men to endure such hardships is recognized as the foundation of our commitment Only our steadfastness of purpose will convince our opponents that they have no hope of success. To all members of the sh1p's company, whose devotion to duty and tireless efforts made this cruise a success, my sincere thanks, Your sp1r1t, co operation, and can do attitude is somethinglshall not forget. pecially in view of the growing dimension of U.S. involvement, but it C OMMA NDIN G OFFICER Commander Philip P. BUSH, son of Mrs. Marjorie L. BUSH, and the late Mr. BUSH, began his naval service in January, 1943. After eighteen months of various enlisted duty, he entered the V-12 program at Oberlin College in July of 1944, and was graduated as a NROTC student with an Ensign's com- mission from the University of Virginia in June, 1946. After his first fourteen month tour of duty as a turret officer aboard the USS LOS ANGELES QCA-1355, Com- mander BUSH attended Electronics Ma- terial School at Treasure Island, San Francisco until February, 1948. His next two tours of duty were as Electronics Officer aboard the USS BAIROKO QCVE- 115p and USS RENDOVA QCVE-114y,dur- ing which time he participated in Operation Sandstone qnuclear tests at Eniwetoky and the evacuation of YMF- 211 from Tsung Too, China. During this period, he was advanced to the grade of Lieutenant fj.g.J in June of 1949 and shortly thereafter was married to the former Mary Lee Lower of Marshall, Missouri. Following a twenty month tour as Communications Officer, and, later, As- sistant Operations Officer of the USS BURTON ISLAND QAGB-ly, Commander BUSH attended a course of instruction in the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base, New Mexico. With this training behind him, Com- mander BUSH reported to the Naval Administrations Unit at Clarksville Base, Tennessee for a two year tour as Electronics and Electrical Supervisor, where he was promoted to Lieutenant in June, 1952. f The following six months, starting in February, 1954, Commander BUSH attended the General Line School at the Naval' Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, to which he later returned in April 1957 in a staff assignment after thirty months as Executive Officer ofthe USS NAIFEH QDE-3525. His second stay at the Naval Post-Graduate School ex- - 4 ...:............t....1,.L...,....a.1....-f..,-...,-v-x----' tended through July 1959, during which time he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. In the succeeding twelve months ending in June 1960, he' attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. As a student in the command and Staff Course. The following two years were split between assignments as Nav- igator of USS ROCHESTER QCA-1245 and Executive Officer of USS SAMUEL N. MOORE QDD-7475. His promotion to the rank of Commander was effective 1 November 1962, during which time he served on the staff of the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island until June, 1965. On 26 July 1965, Commander BUSH relieved Commander L.G. HINCHC LIFF, Jr. as Commanding Officer of the USS HARRY E HUBBARD QDD-748y in Long Beach. EXECUTIVE OFFICER LCDR Edward A Hamilton USN entered the Navy in June 1956, commis sioned as an Ensign in the NROTC pro gram at Oregon State University He successively had tours at the Pacific Reserve Fleet Astoria Oregon Weapons Officer on USS SANAGE QDER 386Jfrom 1959 1960 andOperat1ons Off1cerfNav1 gator aboard the Jumbo oiler KAWISHIWI QAO 146i thereafter After a year of in :mmm struction at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1962-63, LCDR HAMILTON reported aboard the Long Beach destroy- er FECHTELER QDD-8701 as Weapons Officer. Orders in December 1964 trans- ferred him to HUBBARD. LCDR Hamilton was born in Likue, Kauai, Hawaii, attended high school in Honolulu and now claims Oregon as his home state. He graduated from Oregon State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management. Married to the former Sally Summers, the Hamiltons have two children, Douglas 9 and Sandi-Jo 3. The division is men of able body working together to execute HUBBARD's most serious and strenuous evolutions- replenishment, anchoring, mooring, loading the guns, and preserving the ship. HM DIVISION Deep in the dark recesses of the ship, in the jungle of the pipes, midst a maze of valves and the lush foliage of lagging, lives an exotic creature, the machinist mate. Highly skilled in the black arts, he often displays his ability to control the mys- teries of steam by creating a great frothing upheaval of the waters about the stern of the ship. And then a flick of his hand he causes them to be still and the fantail is quiet once again. Extremely jealous of his powers, he has been known to remind others of them by turning off the ship's electrical power and fresh water. However, he is generally quite friendly and co- operative, and nowhere is this better shown than in the Division motto, You make the Bells, we'll make the turns. However, this we know to be false: R Division's rate structure reflects the division's job. The division has several centers of activity: Plot, where movies are shown 25 hours a day by the IC men who un- ceas ingly choose only the best for viewing by the crew: the Wardroom and the Captain's cabin where A gang keeps vigilant watch should the air conditioners cease to functiong the Shipfitter's Shop, where shipfitters and damage controlmen are busy making model cars and whale boat bowsg and the machine shop, where the electricians are making red stars or issuing dead batteries and the MR's are busy making curtain rods and ash trays out of 3 inch shells. It is the name of a division and adepartment. It is a colorful collection of widely differing rates, some having little in common except their berthing space. It is a rambling network of little kingdoms --- Dietzman regally dispensing candy and shoe polish from the ship's store, Brannon handing down the statues of BuSanda from his supply throne, Penera fussing and fuming in the wardroom pantry ---- each small domain in its own small way offering some form of service to the ship. Overall, Supply is a kind of service funnel, an intake valve for HUBBARD'S wants. As a division and as a department, as whatever you want to call it when the meatloaf seems dry or the bearing you need is out of stock, it takes on goods by the ton and stores, trans- forms and hands them out.
