He then furthered his education at Western Kentucky University, the University of Mississippi and the University of Alabama where he received his Bachelor of Science in Education, his Master's in Education and his Doctor of Education. Dr. Rye has worked at a variety of jobs during his career. He held such positions as elementary and remedial reading teacher, zone manager and sales representative for a textbook company. He also worked as principal at both Millport Consolidated Schools and Meek School in Alabama before becoming principal at Harrodsburg High School. When asked how he felt about Harrodsburg, Dr. Rye replied,'There is a feeling of caring in the community ... I appreciate the fact that people are concerned for your welfare . .. Harrodsburg allows a slower pace than large cities. My family and I prefer a community such as this.” Dr. Rye commended HHS for its reputation throughout the state as a strong academic and athletic school and stated several goals that he has for this school: to see that our reputation grows . . . to implement additional academic curriculum in order to prepare students for life ... and the ultimate goal of seeing Harrodsburg High School recognized as the number one school in Kentucky.” Dr. Rye was well-received by students during his first year at HHS. The ten girls began afternoon and evening practice sessions through-out the summer in preparation for NCA Cheerleading Camp. Their hard work paid off winning them the over-all best squad award at Western Kentucky University Camp. The win entitled the squad to attend a National Cheerleading Competition at Orlanda, Florida in December. They placed 13th. in their National category. With hardly a pause to catch their breath, they won the CKC championship in January, the 46th District competition in February and 12th Regional competition in March. This win was the first ever for a Harrodsburg Cheerleading Squad enabling the girls to compete in the State KAPOS At-Large competition at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Kentucky. The squad consisted of three seniors, five juniors and two freshmen, ivho not only practiced for their competition, but planned pep rallies, made posters, fixed surprises for football and basketball players and earned money for their trips. The girls had a great time together and made many good memories. 78 B V. Cheerleaders Captain. Angela Hood Karen Long Co-captain. The HHS Varsity Basketball Squad continued their act this year with a grand finale that carried them all the way through the competition season to one game short of the final Sweet Sixteen in the state. After a slow start, much hard work and true grit helped them to win the local district championship, beating rival Mercer County in the finals. They then went to Pulaski County to compete in the regional contest, winning against tough foe Russell County in the opening game. The second regional game was against Danville, the team expected to be the finals contender in the 12th Region, but the Cinderella Hogs showed Danville a seat in the gallery, as they beat the Admirals in a tremendous finish. They had now gone farther in regional play than any Harrodsburg team in 27 years. Only the Monticello Trojans were able to stop these Pioneers in a hotly contested game for the Regional title. So hail. Regional Runner-Up for 1987—HHS Pioneers!! Coaching the Pioneers through the 1986-87 basketball season were assistant coach Steve Adams, head coach Barry Welty and assistant coach Greg Edwards.
