Paley Said, “Let There Be Soap Operas” and there WERE!! Soap operas originated during the days of radio, when families gathered for nighttime entertainment provided by Franklin D. Roosevelt's Fireside Chats and such radio comedies as Amos Andy and The Fibber McGee and Molly Show . One of the all-time favorite soaps revolved around the antics of a vampire. His name was Barnabas Collins, and the 1%0's-1970's show was Dark Shadows Large soap manufacturers sponsored the first radio dramas, thus spawning the term soap operas . When television overtook radio as America's 1 entertainment medium in the early 1950's, many of the same soaps that were popular on radio continued their success on the tube. DID YOU KNOW?? One of the most popular soap operas today, Days of Our Lives, celebrated its 20th anniversary recently. It still contains 3 original cast members: Tom and Alie Horton along with their son Mickey, played by McDonald Carey, Frances Reid, and |ohn Clark. Current heartthrob, Tom Selleck, was originally a member of Young the Restless Opening - 3 William Paley was the President of CBS when soap operas began.
