The credit belongs to he who is in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again, who knows the real enthusiasm, the great devotion, and spends himself in a worthy cause; and if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So that he’ll never be with those cold and tired souls who know neither victory nor defeat.” Anonymous ®he ride of tfiE |i totmrs 84 The 1970 edition of the Harrodsburg Pioneers compiled the best won-lost record of any H.H.S. football team in recent history. Losing only a pre-season contest to Campbellsville, the Pioneer gridders rolled to a season record of 10-1-0, undefeated in conference and district play. New coach Bill Baldridge and assistants, Feeback, Sims, Samples and Peger, re-introduced Central Kentucky to the singlewing (with modern variations). The Pioneers applied it with a vengeance, amassing these staggering figures: points scored-333 (32.7 average); opponents’ points-76 (6.9 average); point spread—257. The Pioneers finished with the 5th best scoring offense, the 10th best defense and the 6th best point spread (Class A) in the state and ended up in the top ten (Class A) in all four major polls in the state but did not make the play-offs. Beaten only by the “Dickinson System” in both the District and the C.K.C., H.H.S. ended up second with a better record than the winners; 7-0 compared to 6-0 in the district and 6-0 compared to 4-1 in the conference. Individual honors went to several squad members. Halfback Wayne Jackson walked away with the C.K.C. scoring title with 156 points, 14 more than the runner-up, and was fifth highest scorer in the state. All-Conference honors went to End Larry Coy, Center Mike Sallee, Tackle David Taylor and Linebacker-Guard Curry Woods. Named to numerous All-State teams (2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention) were Larry Coy, Wayne Jackson, and David Taylor. Even in the “Beauty Department” the Pioneers did well. Marilee Sallee was runner-up in the annual C.K.C. Football Queen contest. It was a season of much success and much, much PRIDE!
