The Twelve Footprints of Our Trail On September 2, 1952, a motley crew of youngsters entered the red brick school house on North Main Street. They were accompanied by anxious mothers and equipped with rugs, cigar boxes, and buttons for arithmetic class. These fledglings were soon caught up in the process of education with their colored squares signifying helpers and monogramed plates on the clothes line as a reward for eating all their lunches. By the end of the first grade this crew was quite accomplished: they could print their names and had presented a play of nursery rhymes for the P. T. A. As this group advanced into their second year of academic life, the elementary school was placed on morning and afternoon shifts. Even with the limited amount of time, they managed to have a rhythm band and gangs at recess. Who of that class can ever forget January 2, 1956, when they entered the new school? It wasn't new for long however. They were soon back in the groove of buying lunch ticketsand having treats on all the holidays. This company marched to their later years of elementary school with their boys versus girls baseball games, first oral book reports, outlines, and skating parties. This class moved down the hall and after being divided into three homerooms entered Junior High. They proceeded through Junior High leaving their mark and taking many memories with them. The clan will never forget Miss Tully or Mrs. Wiley's history classes. And who can forget the 8B class, the wild parties and hayrides, or the eighth grade trip to Mammoth Cave? On August 30. 1960. the great day finally arrived, and the class of 1964 entered high school. They roamed about the halls for several days trying to remember their schedules and associate teachers with their rooms. One of their first accomplishments was a huge Brylcream tube that stood on their first float. They met Mrs. Gritton and became familiar with Professor and his yardstick. The class will always remember their sophomore projects which ranged from collecting leaves and insects for biology to presenting episodes from Silas Marner complete with costumes and settings. A.l recall that year as being the last students were allowed to go downtown for lunch. The group began their junior year with a new principal and new regulations. Another first was their winning the homecoming float contest with the theme Sayonara. All was not play that year as moans were heard from the geometry and chemistry students. The scholars managed to survive, however, and completed the year with a big bang by giving a Prom for the class of 1963. The class of 1964 has reached the end of a journey of twelve years. Their last Scout has been published; their Harrodian is completed. Never again will this group fill the halls of H. H. S. On June 2. 1964, this motley crew of young men and women departed from Harrodsburg High School; their diplomas in one hand, their futures in the other.
